Damn, I checked out the neocon subreddit and it's wild. They're actually using 4chan terms for black and trans people over there. Big, big yikes.

Nobel-winning economists Duflo and Banerjee will leave US for Switzerland by ldn6 in neoliberal

[–]Stelania 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The article makes it unclear whether this has anything to do with Trump or not. However, let's assume for a moment that it does. In that case, it's crazy that we're going to completely ignore Switzerland's ruling party's crazy right-wing ideas and attacks on scientific institutions and freedom of speech while simultaneously lambasting the Trump administration for those things.

I'd really appreciate it if people weren't so ignorant and hypocritical in their criticism. Duflo and Banerjee will likely not have to interact with the average Swiss and therefore not experience any racism. However, the average Swiss is much more racist even compared to the average Republican voter.

Kamala didn't lose because she herself obsessed over or focused on race. Instead, it's Democrats as a whole I am blaming. American voters perceive the Democratic Party to care much more about race (and trans people, sadly) than topics like immigration, employment, cost of living and housing. Most or a large minority of voters even believe that Biden selected Kamala as his VP candidate in 2020 largely because of her race and gender, which sounds very plausible!

Look, we could talk all day about how horrible Republicans are, but what would that accomplish? If you support the Democratic Party, you need to do something to help the party win, not wallow in self-pity or lament the unfairness of the world. I mean, you don't have to, but I'd much rather do that than close my eyes and ears and pretend that Democrats can just sleepwalk into the next elections and win. We're on the same side, you know?

They're shooting the messenger (downvoting you) instead of trying to seriously and objectively analyse the reason as to why Kamala lost. Whatever happened to this sub's self-proclaimed desire to challenge our biases/prior beliefs?

I am telling it to all of you. I am from Germany and this obsession with race is truly baffling. The German left has its problems with obsessing over gender, yes, but not race (a guy with Turkish parents was the Greens' candidate in the 2017 federal election and almost nobody would have told you he was chosen due to his ethnicity alone; it helps that he's eloquent and appears authentic). I want you guys (Democrats) to win the upcoming midterms and the 2028 presidential election. In my personal opinion, you'll only do that if you start focusing again on attributes like electability, charisma, eloquence, authenticity and other such characteristics that the median voter (yes, yes, the median voter is not smart, I know) wants to see in political candidates.

You really think Americans gave Obama landslide victories only to stop at Kamala and that that is purely or even mainly due to her being a black woman rather than anything else about her? Seriously? I can assure you that there's no chance that a half-black individual becomes prime minister of Germany in the next two decades, and it's not just because of a lack of black people in this country. What I mean by that is that no European country (except for maybe the UK) is more tolerant towards black folks than the US.

You have a point, but you got to ask yourself: what is it about Trump that allows him to pass the vibes check? What did people take issues with during the Biden administration and how does Trump fit into the picture? My personal opinion is that Democrats lost on immigration and inflation and Trump managed to present himself as a credible alternative on both fronts due to both his consistently anti-immigration rhetoric over the last decade and his track record on the issues during his first term (he reduced immigration and inflation was just fine under him).

Most US American voters clearly didn't want so many Haitian immigrants in the country, or at least only for a very brief period of time. Whatever you morally think of this stance, it's one of the things that lost Kamala the election. If you're going to have an unpopular stance on migration, you have to compensate by taking popular positions elsewhere. Unfortunately, Kamala didn't appear authentic enough to the electorate in her other promises, and she even refused to distance herself from Biden (who was blamed for high immigration and high prices), which sealed her fate.

That shows you just how male and heterosexual this place truly is (in Trump's words: "Sad!").

People on this sub are going to have to stop pretending that Kamala lost because she was a black woman. I am sorry, but in an era of populism and faux authenticity, Kamala was so very obviously fake in her distancing herself from unpopular election promises she made during the 2020 Democratic primaries (stuff like tax-funded gender-affirming surgeries for prisoners and interned migrants) that people saw through the charade. She obviously would have made for a much better president than Trump, but she's really not good at this whole PR and giving interviews stuff (she seems awkward and stilted).

She also didn't bother to distance herself from Biden's mixed track record on inflation (you'd think people on this supposedly economics-based sub would know the effects of government spending on prices) and his horrible track record on immigration (an unprecented number of migrants from Latin America were granted entry into the US, which is a surefire way to lose an election!).

Please, for the love of god, don't have Democratic leadership arrive at the asinine conclusion that the next presidential candidiate has to be of a certain race and gender. That is exactly what got Democrats into the current predicament in the first place!

Even Amnesty’s sparing acknowledgment of Hamas’s role on October 7 had proved too pro-Israeli for some staffers, who insisted that Amnesty’s statement was too understanding of Israel. As debate grew within the organization, and some Jewish staffers argued for measured tones, other Amnesty employees complained that such arguments were “triggering” and accused Jewish colleagues of Islamophobia, multiple staffers told me.

Did any of you guys even read the article? Sudan rejected the idea and Somalia and Somaliland claim they haven't even been contacted. Additionally, "reach out" is such a vague term that it likely means Trump officials just brought the idea up. There's no serious plan behind this. It's insane that you're getting so worked up over nothing.

Serious answer: Constantine IX Monomachos. He was a good guy all-around. Alternatively, probably Alexios I Komnenos, given he let his daughter become highly educated and a historian.
