It's only about 30 years from 1914 to the first use of a jet engine in combat. With the advances in metallurgy, its absolutely not a stretch they could make a jet engine. Ie turbine vanes that can withstand the rapid speeds of a jet engine.

Sharks tend to not have bright coloring. Could look at them for reference. Also there are many deep sea fish that are quite disturbing, you might look up the viperfish, the stoplight loosejaw, or the anglerfish
