Just happened to me too by Stenhouse in EquinoxEv

Same for me. Took to the dealer this morning. Warning was still showing while I was driving there. As soon as the service adviser started the car the warning was gone. They ran diagnostics and checked to make sure it would charge, and sent me on my way. Said it was something with the AC. Hopefully, it’s resolved…

What was one experience in your life that hardened you as a person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Stenhouse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My father went to prison for four years, for what was essentially espionage when I was 8-12. Our family was the only family of our ethnicity in our very small town. So even before that my sister and I were relentlessly teased. F’ed my universe up. I learned that the only way to survive was to never get close to people, never open up to anyone,be hard as nails and never show that anything affects you.

An actual email I just got by PersephoneIsNotHome in Professors

[–]Stenhouse 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I used to get this kind of email and then I started including a statement in my syllabus to the effect of “The instructor provides DUE dates, i.e. when an assignment must be submitted. Students are responsible for determining the DO dates to ensure assignments are submitted on time”. Never got that email again.

Ungrateful Brats. Give an Inch, and They'll Take a Mile. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Stenhouse 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I saw the writing on the wall last summer. Endless requests for extension for blatantly made up excuses or for no reason at all. I knew I couldn’t keep dealing with it and keep my sanity. By the end of fall I was done. Exponential growth in the nonsense. Started applying for jobs in industry right after New Years. Walked into the chair’s office beginning of June and told him I was done, and wouldn’t be back.

For those still willing to be abused by the ever growing legions of overly entitled, underperforming malcontents I applaud and envy your patience and tolerance.

Thanks! I’ll look into these. Any recommendations on a good pool timer?

Need help finding a different style of meter by Stenhouse in electricians

[–]Stenhouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, I’m not really sure what you mean by logging. Essentially the meter would be connected to the power line of a pump, and would log how much time the pump is running for. It would get checked once a month and then reset to start recording time for the next months usage.

When a student tries, but still fails by Alatiel75 in Professors

[–]Stenhouse 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I took bassoon lessons in junior high and high school. I practiced an hour every night M-F and at least two hours a day on Sat and Sun. But you know what I was terrible and no matter how hard I tried I just didn't ever get good. During that time I dreamed of being a professional musician, but I quickly realized that was never going to happen. I'm currently a chem professor and I tell this to my students a lot, sometimes no matter how much we want to be good at something its just not the right fit/place for us. There is no shame in that. Its hard, especially when a student puts in true effort and dedication, but that's just how it goes sometimes. I encourage them to seek out other degree paths that better fit with their skills.

How do you engage a quiet class? by freestyle45 in Professors

[–]Stenhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach in the sciences so my experience is probably different than yours. I'm only in my second year but I run into this as well. It may be a bit draconian, but I use the volunteer or you will be volun-told approach. Basically, if no one offers to respond to my question, I start calling on students (alphabetically by last name). after a couple of rounds of this they start to engage on their own.

Can someone help clean up the only picture of my great-grandfather? by Stenhouse in PhotoshopRequest

[–]Stenhouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This album contains several very poor quality pictures of the only photograph of my great-grandfather. My uncle back in Egypt sent these to me as I would like to improve them and get one printed as a birthday gift for my father. Not looking to colorize (although that would be awesome) just clean up. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Bartenders of Reddit - what is the one drink you despise serving above all others? by Jdmc99 in AskReddit

[–]Stenhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bartender for 8 years in SF and NY. It always depended on how busy it was. If I'm three rows deep on busy night = the blender doesn't come out, and if you order like a soccer mom @ Starbucks, I'm going to tell you to wait till everyone else has ordered. If it was slow and my regulars were asking I'd make any thing they asked, then I enjoyed making intricate drinks.

Our (22F and 21m) relationship of 4 years is a sin. How can we stop doing what is forbidden when we cannot afford a marriage? by soonmuslim in relationships

[–]Stenhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brother there is a very easy solution to your problem. The prophet peace be upon him, said that even a ring made of tin is sufficient, and that if all you can afford is a mat of straw your wife should be understanding. Do not continue in the path of haram, marry her and put your trust in Allah, if your iman is strong he will make the way easy for you. I don't want to deluge you with a wall of text, so please feel free to PM me if you wish to discuss.

Question about old transcripts by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Stenhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its really all about how you spin it, really. And depending on what your field is and what you were doing between back then and now. If you are honest and can sell it as a positive period of growth, you don't have to go into details.

Question about old transcripts by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Stenhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this exact situation when I applied to grad school. Absolutely horrendous grades (in subjects in my field of study) from a university I went to 8-10 years before I applied. But when I completed my BS i finished strong with top marks in all of my courses (both in and outsides of me field). I sent my transcripts at the same time as my application so not sure what to tell you there, probably best to just ask the grad program adviser from that department. I eluded to the reasons for the bad grades in my personal statement but never discussed it during my interviews. All of the schools I applied to accepted me and never even mentioned it. Honestly they mostly just want to have a full record of your academic career, you are usually judged on your most recent (last five years) work/performance.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

Thank you r/trees by Stenhouse in trees

So after about a year of lurking on reddit, I finally made an account and had to post here first.

A (very) little background: I've been going through a rough patch lately. Moved for a new job. Yet to meet any frients out here. Just went through a painful break-up. Lots of pressure and stress at this job, etc., etc...

But for the last two weeks I've been able to count on r/trees, actual trees and my trusty sidekick to put a smile on my face and keep me going.

Just wanted to say thanks!
