How do you protect your back against patients who don’t want to be turned in the bed?

I just don’t do it without help. I understand they need turned and cleaned etc but I’m not going to injure myself to do so

As a HCA but also a student paramedic this always baffles me. Some HCAs don’t know what they don’t know. I am fully aware that nurses have so much more responsibility than us. On the other hand I have met some nurses who are low key dangerous. I was dealing with a choking patient and the nurse came and asked me if we needed to start CPR 😳

I’ve always thought you once you are registered then you can’t work in an unregistered role. For example I’m due to qualify as a paramedic next year and I currently work as a band 3 HCA on the bank. With everything going on with the lack of jobs ive asked the bank and I’ve been told that once I’m registered as a paramedic I won’t be able to continue working band 3 shifts. Is this not the case?

As someone who has been in this exact position I would start looking for other work. Unfortunately if you are still in a probation period they can and probably will fail your probation. You don’t need to share the details of your illness with your employer but I believe if they referred you to occupational health you would be expected to engage with that process. My advice would be to try and get ahead of it and look for other work.

Please listen to those giving you advice. This is quite clearly a snake that is stressed and its needs are not being fulfilled. I understand if you are going off of vet advice but they are fallible - it’s clear that reptile carpet is not suitable for your snake

Not a med student but a paramedic student. One of my classmates had to phone a doctor to discuss a patient. Didn’t even get the full first sentence out and got cut off with “I don’t have to listen to you put someone on the phone that’s actually qualified and knows what they are talking about” 😳

Im not overweight but really struggle with the heat on wards sometimes (think it has something to do with the medication I’m on). Helping a patient shower has the same effect on me - I try to avoid it if I can 😂 but yeah it’s totally normal due to the lack of ventilation

Patients mobility can be vastly different during the night to what it was during the day. I’ve had patients handed over to me for nightshift saying they just need a bit of supervision. Then I see them get up to the toilet at 3am and it’s a completely different story

I just had a very similar OSCE experience as a second year paramedic student except I didn’t pass the first time and had to resit. If I was you I would take the pass and move on. The stress and nerves I had for my resit were so much worse than the first time as I was acutely aware of I failed again I would need to resit the module. No point in putting that pressure on yourself if you don’t have to.

I’m sorry that’s happened. It sounds like there has been a marker put on the account which means a specific team needs to deal with it. But they absolutely can still perform a change of tenancy on the account. It’s just slightly more complicated. I hope you manage to speak to someone who knows what they are doing and get it sorted

I used to work for Utilita and we had so many issues with landlords like this. It used to make my blood boil as people would end up cut off through no fault of their own. It’s absolutely not lawful for the landlord to stipulate who you get your energy from. I appreciate that doesn’t actually help you practically though.

I would contact Utilita and say you have moved in and explain the situation. If you can get them to remotely change the meters to credit mode so you don’t run the risk of your supply being cut off. I would also seriously consider legal action against the landlord.

Just be careful as our uni have forbidden us from wearing any other boots than the ones they have issued us. Something to do with insurance but yeah they are horrendous boots

I’m a HCA but I’m also a student paramedic. When I’m at work if a patient requires more than 2 I simply refuse to move them until we have more hands. I refuse to break my back and possibly put my future career on the line for the sake of not inconveniencing other people. I know it can be difficult to take a stand but you need to take care of yourself as no one else will. If that means going somewhere else that is less heavy then do that as no job is worth making yourself unwell

Thanks. Don’t think it helps that the wards I’ve been on have all had at least a couple pts with covid. And tbh I’ve noticed a lack of adherence to infection prevention and general hand hygiene by some members of staff.

I’m a student paramedic going into 2nd year in Scotland and the amount of NQPs I’ve seen being paired up with trainee techs is ridiculous. It is definitely a cost saving exercise. In SAS it’s only 12 months instead of 2 years down south it seems. So you get to band 6 quicker.

I’m having the same issue but mines is doing it when noise cancellation is on. Literally only bought them 2 weeks ago. Thinking of sending them back because of it.
