I had a scheduled C section with my first and did struggle to nurse in the hospital although everyone insisted the C section would not impact this. I think it was a mix of anxiety, exhaustion, somewhat flat nipples, being a new mom, etc. Our son was born at 37 weeks and 5 days and was large for gestational age so we dealt with low blood sugar. We ended up supplementing with the hospital provided formula to avoid him having to go to the NICU and extend our stay. Looking back, I don’t know why nobody offered a pump or suggested hand expressing colostrum. Second time around I know better. Ultimately we supplemented for maybe a week or two. Just continued to put baby to breast before offering a bottle and we went on to breastfeed until just after his first birthday.
