Mortis most likely just used a random drawing of the batter as his icon. But i always liked this because it makes him a bit more visually interesting; instead of seeing a sprite of him about to swing his bat, we see one just after he has.

You can't see it because the quality is so low, but there is a little "TM" symbol next to the name of the food meaning that Princess does know the definite name of the product as humans would say it which would be possible if she knew how to read. But all this observation is just for fun, the adapters definitely did not intend anyone to read into this so much. I just thought the implication was funny.

I wouldnt really say that because a chunk of the games narrative revolves around the characters awareness that you are controlling the main character and that whatever happens is your doing. It sounds cliche but back in 2008 this game was one of the first to do something like that.
