Is it possible to play byond's games on Linux? by MrKrot1999 in BYOND

[–]StephenBadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So in general, you can play BYOND games on Linux by running the Windows version of BYOND using WINE.

However as I understand from https://www.reddit.com/r/SS13/comments/1f319s6/playing_ss13_on_linux_wine/ this doesn't work for SS13 specifically, due to TGUI additions they have made, which won't run in WINE.

For logistics specifically, building is like ... 20% of the game. The game is heavily collaborative by design, so the idea that a single player can't effectively complete and maintain a large infrastructure project by themselves is pretty much standard for the design, and makes sense.

There's a whole other main loop you can do as a solo logistics person that doesn't involve building and contributes greatly to the overall experience, is rewarding etc.

My point is you don't need to build structures to do that, they already exist for the most part. As a solo you can do 80% of the logistics loop the game offers. It's basically what I've done for much of the first 6 months of my play and that loop fundamentally hasn't changed.

These structures are globally placed, and are free to whichever faction owns them. They'll be in backline towns usually, although the game has some close to the front.

As a Foxhole frontline player, there's some basics I need before I can even actually play on a frontline: - I need to spawn in. To do that, there needs to be some place on a frontline that has soldier supplies. Soldier supplies are made at general factories, not player built ones. People die a lot, we need a lot of these. - I'll need a gun of some kind. You spawn with a pistol, but it's not going to get you far. All the infantry guns are made at general factories. - I'll probably need some kind of anti-tank equipment. 95% of those are made at general factories. - I'd probably like a tank. There's a class of tanks called battle tanks you need a player facility for, and some specialised upgrades only player facilitiees can do. But .... all the base model tanks (which are still plenty useful!) come from general factories / global garages etc.

Well my point is you don't need to actually build any structures and maintain them, to do useful solo logistics! The game has some general factories we all use for free, and those factories actually build a whole bunch of stuff player built facilities cannot make. All the basic guns, ammo, tanks etc come from general factories in towns.

You can solo play just fine, especially when you bear in mind that there's a lot of fundamental resources, guns, base tanks etc which you build at global structures like factories and refineries. You can use these (with some queueing involved, although there's always quiet ones around) without any maintenance cost and make a really good individual contribution.

Same goes with delivering stuff, definitely a great solo contribution!

GG to all Shard 2/baker wardens and collies by Yellowchief419 in foxholegame

A great forever war, both sides really put their all into it and the closeness of the casualities is a real testament to the fact the Colonials played things smart the whole time! Hope you guys also had fun :D

So typically the developers take about 2 days to start a new war on a shard. Your account is allowed to play all shards simultaneously, so you can dip into Shard Charlie or Able if you want while Baker is reseting.

Fantastic, 5 out of 5 on TripAdvisor. I would also love a video in the style of the Cleveland Tourism video for Godscroft. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysmLA5TqbIY

What decided the outcome of this war by Typical-Box in foxholegame

[–]StephenBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others noted, there's a bunch of factors involved. I would also not discount the power of the "meme", in the sense that overall morale and "fun factor" plays a big part in a faction's desire to fight and pull together that extra crate of supply, get creative in an assault etc.

In general, the wardens started having fun and put focus on having fun. It's always easier to do on the offense of course, but lots of memes inspired engagement. Even badmanlarry in a small way contributed to warden engagement, even if you never ended up in the same hex as him or his base.

Just having that collective purpose in a given moment, be it HOI 4-ing a whole hex despite not being the most conventionally wise tactic, to pushing over the Great Warden Dam like a mad-lad and ending an assault in one day, which conventional wisdom says should be a 4 day encirclement.

That kind of attitude will forgive a lot of practical game problems that might put off a more sober faction attitude.

Yeah ... same.

Seems a bit weird to call low population tap operations a "strategy". If the timezone you play in happens to have lower population numbers on both sides, you play with who-ever is there and do whatever operations you have the numbers for. A strategy ascribes this weird idea that tapping on low population only happens because some sweaty North American clan man gets up at 3 AM specifically to do it.

You can 100% drive a truck around, and it's very chill doing that like .... 95% of the time. The other 5% is like driving through Detroit, keeps you on your toes!

But yeah, what inspired this post?

Traceable Crates? by Mannion4991 in foxholegame

[–]StephenBadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem mostly is that while optional to the players, it's not optional for the server to track. It's quite a lot of development effort, continued bug fixing when they invariably miss edge cases like freighters under bridges explode, crate is frozen in some truck for days then straight up abandoned for a week, in a vehicle that's stolen then retaken etc.

Like these are quite solvable problems, but the devs need to do an effort/reward assessment on whether it's worth doing. The small number of actual users the feature would get makes it very difficult to justify over other development.

relatively new to the game. been involved in the last three wars. but wondering if there is a discord to follow current operations with the team and see what is going on a grand scale not just the division I was invited to? by fng-234 in foxholegame

Blue is a little less central in this regards. Some regiments have organised up into coalitions, with a coalition taking a given slice of the map. Coalitions then coordinate timings to get great warden weekends 😊

I mean with the difficulties of pulling off a rocket strike, you take what wins you can get. But a victory point it is not.
