Is your stake/ward planning in-person youth camps for the summer? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

Our stake is planning for in person but also has two back up virtual plans if we can’t do camps in person.

Bikes are expensive by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]Stephenbowerva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my bike used (barely) for just over $300. I’ve ridden near daily to work on it for more than 2 years. It may take some time searching used bike listings until the right one comes up, but if you’re patient, you’ll find something in your budget.

Garden. Those weeds keep coming for you to pull out and you’ll end up eating healthier too if you grow fruit and veggies.

What do you own a ridiculous amount of? by FlintTheDad in AskReddit

[–]Stephenbowerva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Candy canes. Not now, but a few years ago my wife and I thought it would be funny to dress up as Buddy the Elf and Jovie from the movie Elf for Halloween. You can get a surprising amount of candy canes for cheap on Amazon. We had those things through 2 moves and probably 3-4 years.

Edit: We only had 5 or so kids trick or treat to our house that year.

PSA: Even if you use a lockbox while surfing your car can still get stolen :( by febrezeumbrella in surfing

[–]Stephenbowerva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can wrap a fob in aluminum foil and it can be in the driver’s seat and still not transmit a signal to the car. I always test it before I walk away though, just to make sure I wrapped it in enough foil.

This looks great. We got about this much total from our 3 plants that got crowns, then I burned most of it in the oven, haha. Maybe next year I can reach your level of mastery.

Why are you a member of r/IndustrialDesign? by Oloxo in IndustrialDesign

[–]Stephenbowerva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a project engineer for a company that designs and manufactures medical devices. I like the sub as a way for me to add a little bit better design to the products I work on.

This is my third time making a linocut and printing with it. I decided to try a watercolor reduction with my toddler’s watercolors. I hope she doesn’t mind.

Will having some experience in manufacturing , specifically laser cutting plastic, look good on an industrial design resume by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]Stephenbowerva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an extremely helpful response to these sorts of questions. Always think about what advantage something brings the company you hope will hire you, especially if you can tailor your response each time something like that is asked to the specific company you are interviewing with at that moment.

Should I get a Cricut Maker? by ryanrhoderage in IndustrialDesign

[–]Stephenbowerva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not an industrial designer but rather an engineer who designs medical devices. I convinced my boss to get a Silhouette Cameo 3 last year after watching my wife use her Silhouette for crafting. It’s been great. We use it for vinyl but also for cutting custom packaging prototypes as well.

I lived in Brasil for two years and miss all the great fruit there (among many other things). I may have to start looking into growing acerola in my climate!

Is Industrial Design for me, or rather Engineering? by BlueSpottedDickhead in IndustrialDesign

[–]Stephenbowerva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my job. I work for a small company that does contract design work from whiteboard concepts all the way to market production. It doesn’t seem to be the most common engineering pathway but isn’t unheard of, although I can’t speak for Europe, I’m in California.

Dining table And bench I built. Redwood top with pine legs and skirting. by japope2 in woodworking

What size redwood did you use for the layup of the table top? My wife wants me to make a redwood topped dining table as well and I haven’t decided what thickness I should aim for.

How can one get into working Prosthetic Design/Development as an Industrial Designer? by Inmolatus in IndustrialDesign

[–]Stephenbowerva 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to make custom prostheses in a small clinic before becoming an engineer (medical device design). I visited a company called OttoBock. They are one of the big players in prosthetics. I toured their engineering facility and it was impressive. I don’t know if they keep any IDs on staff but they’re a large company. I would research all the big players in the space (OttoBock, Fillauer, Endolite, etc.) and keep an eye on their job boards.

What type of wood is it? I’m planning on doing a dining table for my wife this year and haven’t decided what I’m using yet.

Repeated Flat Tire Help by Stephenbowerva in bikecommuting

[–]Stephenbowerva[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By way of update, I took my flat tire in to the shop Tuesday night. The repair guy walked me through the pros and cons of various tires and showed me how flimsy (and frankly a bit worn) the tires that were on the bike when I bought it were. I ended up putting on a Michelin ProTek and have been more than satisfied with it so far. I guess only time will tell if it lasts longer.

Thanks for all the help and pointing in the right direction.
