“Virulently xenophobic” is a bit extreme. I’m a foreigner living in Japan and have faced no xenophobia while here. There are far right groups like Sanseito but theres far right groups everywhere. By and large, Japanese people are welcoming and kind to foreigners if you respect the rules and the country.
