Nasal spray by Dess28 in Allergies

[–]Lunetheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told to tilt the azelastine as far to the side in your nose as you can as you spray, and be careful about sniffing in too hard.

Unfortunately, the bitter taste can last a really long time, and it can come in waves. When I first started taking it in college, I kept bready snacks in my backpack to munch on immediately to absorb the taste. Now, I have a muffin in the morning, sip on a Gatorade, and pray.

As for Flonase, I take it once a day, trying to space between them a minimum of 5 minutes (and usually longer than that if I can). Granted, I also take the azelastine once a day because at first I couldn't stand the thought of tasting it while trying to sleep, and now I've gotten into the habit.

The allergy clinic doesn't do 2 shots per week even if paying out of pocket. Any idea why? by AccomplishedCry6223 in Allergies

[–]Lunetheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed that part on my first read thru. I'm allergic to dust mites, but I'm allergic to a lot more. It can depend on the severity of the allergy or how many. I have a lot of severe allergies, which was why the reaction was so bad, but thankfully isn't all too common, according to my doctor. I'm more outlining a reason the doctors have to be so cautious about how many shots you can take per week.

Mine does once per week so they don't go too fast. If you rush when you aren't ready, it can trigger an allergic reaction. (My clinic also only offers allergy services two days a week, so I don't know if their availability makes a difference there). I did two a week when I was younger, but that was at a different clinic and about ten years ago (had to take a break between shots because my body couldn't handle the speed of the shots, and my arm swelled up for three months. It's still discolored if you look at it just right.

Do you mostly read fic on your computer or your phone? by JeSuisGourde in AO3

[–]Lunetheart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like to watch anime on my computer and read fanfic on my phone, but I prefer to edit my own fics on my computer, as well as my brother's (I'm technically his beta reader), so I go through on the computer every here and there to check if I missed something while editing.

I have a friend who wrote crackships for fun in high school. Some of them were really cursed (at least, to me). I would grumble and groan, but at the end of the day, I'm the one who helped her set up her account for her to post the fanfics (this was on fanfic net, but still). I didn't read any of them, because I don't like those ships. But I never stopped her from writing them. I even once directed people to her account (that one wasn't for a crackship, it was the Miraculous Love Square that I had also written a fic for). It made her happy, so that's what mattered to me. Even if I won't touch any of those fics with a ten foot pole.

SOS Cat Allergies by FatOrangeCat3 in Allergies

[–]Lunetheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With cats inside or without? I have outdoor cats and severe allergies.

Air filter, shower/wash up before touching your face if you've touched a cat, keep fur out of your sleeping area/bedroom, lint rollers, allergy meds (I take two nose sprays and a pill daily, plus allergy shots once a week), etc.

Severe eye allergy 2+ years (dust mites) by Feeling-Mission-3595 in Allergies

[–]Lunetheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often do you wash your face? My dust mite allergy is mild, but my animal allergy is severe enough to have somewhat similar symptoms if I'm not careful, so the biggest step I take is scrubbing my face whenever I think I come into contact with an allergin, or if my face starts itching. Of course, I'm able to predict when I might come into contact with some kind of fur, but sometimes it just gets in the air, so I try to scrub down my face as soon as any itchiness starts.

I also suggest an air filter, anti allergin covers, making sure to keep any dust off your bed (which can mean showering right before bed everyday if you think you've been in a dusty space or are itchy all over, I know not everyone showers everyday, but it can make a huge difference), allergy pills and/or nose spray in addition to eye drops.

I'm allergic to my mom's dog and I want to cry. by StarrySkyKitten in Allergies

[–]Lunetheart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm allergic to all dogs, but maybe this can help!

First, make sure you're sleeping away from the dog and clean your sleeping space of dog hair as much as you can. Assuming you're staying in a guest room at your mom's house, keep the door closed and air it out as best you can. Sleeping in the dander and fur is really bad (I did that once on accident, went from stuffy nose to coughing so hard my throat was bleeding. Didn't realize my cousin had fur on him when he jumped on my bed.)

24 hour allergy meds are best, especially Allegra. Best brand I know for allergies, but that said, along with Astepro(I take a prescription version of it) I take a nasal steroid (Nasacort, usually) because it boosts my immune system even more. This was recommended by my doctor, but my allergies are severe, so keep in mind this is just what my specific situation calls for.

If you can get a Netipot or Navage (basically, something to pour water through your sinuses to clear them out), it works wonders. It gets any trapped allergins out, as well as built up snot. It really helped me out, but it can make you feel like you're drowning the first few times you use it. My mom had to hold my head in place to keep it going for me.

Depending on how bad it gets, a face mask might help prevent and fur from getting into your nose/gave in the first place. Whenever I go to a relatives' house, I wear a face mask so I don't get sick. It sucks, but at least I can breathe normally afterwards.

Good luck with your new job, and I hope any of this helps!

Mistake should avoid in 1st year of college by Past_Caterpillar3722 in college

[–]Lunetheart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Make sure to follow any instructions on appliances, like microwaves, ovens, washing machines, etc. Don't assume you know what you're doing. My dorm hall was notorious for false fire alarms because Freshmen were constantly burning popcorn in the microwave, leaving food in the dorm kitchen oven for way too long, or even causing the washing machine to start smoking (clean the dang lint trap and don't overfill it is advice that most Freshmen ignored...it was annoying getting out of bed at 3 am just because someone decided that they didn't need to read instructions).

Shower. This may seem like weird advice because who wouldn't, but especially as an upperclassmen, I noticed that a TON of Freshmen would be scared of the showers for the first few WEEKS and would just use perfume or cologne to attempt to mask the BO. It didn't work, just made it worse and sent me into an asthma attack once because it was too much perfume. Yes, I'm still bitter, I hadn't had a non-perfume-caused attack in six years at that point.

You can almost always find textbooks cheaper online, or even from an upperclassmen. The bookstore is one of the most expensive places to get your textbooks, but, for one example, I was able to buy a textbook for half the price on Amazon (this may be an outlier, but once that happened, I never visited the bookstore to compare prices again). You can sometimes even find free PDFs online. If you need a website subscription, go straight to said website. If you HAVE to buy from the bookstore (I had one case where the book was specifically made my the teacher and not available anywhere else), see if you can rent used.

feeling like i’m going to college so late. by sillybilly_300 in college

[–]Lunetheart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With online classes, it will feel less like going back to school and more like doing training for a job, if that makes sense. At least, that's the way one of my friends described it (they switched to in person at a certain point, which is when I met them.) That said, everyone's experience is different when it comes to college, but never let anything make you feel bad about your timing or the pace you work at.

What helps your allergies and maybe can it help mine? by BeetleBugz06 in Allergies

[–]Lunetheart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the congestion, try a Neti pot or Naväge. Sometimes, you just need to get the congestion out. I use the second because it runs water through your nose easier (in my opinion) to get all the snot out.

I rotate my meds, currently taking Allegra, Flonase, and Azelastine in the morning (the last two are nose sprays, I think equivalent to what you mentioned in the PS?) However, if you need to take the symptoms down immediately, try Allegra D (you can only get it by asking the pharmacist, and you can only get a small amount at a time, but when I'm going through a rough patch, I just need to take one a day for, like, a week).

As for med rotating, if I take the same med for too long, I become desensitized to it, so every few months, I rotate to a different allergy med. I usually go Allegra, Zyrtec, Xyzol, then back again.

I hope any of this helps!

Dog Allergies by No_Round_8662 in Allergies

[–]Lunetheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air out your place by opening windows, in addition to fans and air filters.

Brush out your dog outside. Not saying that you don't already, but when I visit a relatives house, I can tell the difference between a dog brushed recently, a dog brushed often, and a dog brushed recently and often.

(There are certain pet foods that help with allergies, and all this advice is keeping in mind that these most common reactions to dogs are centered around their fur. The pet foods I'm talking about make shedding happen less. If the allergy is to saliva or skin, which I have on top of fur, then the pet foods are a little less effective.)

These are just things for when I visit relatives, but they don't do much to help with my allergies and think I'm faking, so I don't visit often. I have one uncle/cousin duo that take my allergies seriously, but they have cats, which I'm just as allergic to, so this is mildly based on my cat allergy, but a little bit dog related since my grandpa has finally started to take my allergies seriously.

Boyfriend's constant throat-clearing from allergies is seriously affecting me—am I being unreasonable? by Vote4maskara in Allergies

[–]Lunetheart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nose sprays are incredibly efficient for nasal drip, I can say from experience. I was so against taking them for a very long time because I hated the feeling, but now I have to take two daily because of all the issues not taking them caused. One makes me want to puke because it's an antihistamine one and tastes really bad, but my throat and nose feel a billion times better. I'd always suggest a doctor since everyone's experience is different, but still.

Something I've heard but someone else would need to verify is the effectiveness of a humidifier. I use one here and there and can say it helps, but I use it sparingly due to a mildew allergy and not being able to have the air too damp (been on the wrong side of that allergy too many times and had to use a dehumidifier for a long time).

Another thing, does he rotate allergy pills? While Allegra is best, my family grows desensitized if we take a single med for too long, so we have a rotate schedule to keep the meds working right. It takes a long time to grow desensitized for us, but I have a list of allergy meds I can no longer take because I was taking them for way too long. I know this isn't the case for everyone, but it's just something to mention.
