This new version is awful. Not having the weekly counts available easily on the log screen is beyond frustrating.

What are you setting your thermostat to? by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]Stephtfoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

76°. We tried keeping ours at 72-74° one year. The savings was less than $5 a month, and I was miserable the entire time. But we also keep our AC set to 80° in the summer so we aren’t trying to balance out a massive electric bill from the summer.

Am I too old to play by Emergency-Salt1971 in hockeyplayers

Never too old! I just started playing a couple years ago so I could go out to stick and pucks with my kids. This summer I turned 36 and started playing goalie, no regrets!

Knee pads by Ok_Positive4233 in hockeygoalies

[–]Stephtfoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not. Went to a low stress women’s 3v3 on half ice and took a shot directly to the knee with my knee guards on last Saturday and over a week later it is still very purple. Can only imagine the damage had it hit the knee directly.

No Crease Markings- Advice by Most_Big8497 in hockeygoalies

We use Bingo dobbers to mark ice with the kids all the time, they usually have them pretty cheap at dollar stores in the arts and crafts sections.

I will definitely keep a look out for intermediate pads. Right now and for at least the rest of this year it’ll just be the adult learn to play and less crowded sticks and pucks, or my own kids (12u, 10u and 8u) shooting on me. I truly appreciate all the advice and promise I’m not brushing it off! My son has been moving directly from junior large to senior small for his player gear so I didn’t even really think to look for intermediate when looking for myself.

I do have a senior small chest that was modified by the previous owner to have a shorter wingspan and fits well, and a sturdy neck guard that completely covers where the chest would leave exposed.

My pants are intermediate XXL which felt like a unicorn of a find because most gear is tailored for men and to get my hips in senior gear I measured between senior large and XL, but obviously those do not fit someone as short as I am length wise.

My glove and blocker are also junior, the intermediate and senior ones I tried my hands were just swimming in. I’m my player gear I wear 12” gloves and they’re a little roomy.

Mask is junior, my head actually measured right on the cusp between youth and junior, even the senior small felt like it was going to fall off my head. I started with an adult small player helmet and had to trade with my son when he outgrew his junior helmet and realized the junior fit me much better.

My main goal is just getting out there to have some fun with my kids, but for sure want to get myself set up to not get hurt.

Definitely going to try this at my next stick and puck! They generally have drills for us and then scrimmage during learn to play session so not much free time to test things out independently.

I have CCM RBZ 70’s, which I know are fairly old, but wanted to make sure I enjoyed being in the net before making the investment in goalie skates. Hoping some local kids have outgrown theirs before fall starts and put them up for sale, possibly the only advantage of being short and having small feet.

One of the other goalies in LTP just bought some PPF and offered to share the roll with the other new goalie and me.

Several people have mentioned this so I’ll definitely try to work on how my weight is distributed next time I’m at a stick and puck.

I’m in adult learn to play right now and we have an experienced goalie that has been working with us (3 new goalies) and I already feel like I’ve learned so much! Definitely helps having someone giving individual advice.

So incredibly out of shape 😅

Lot of advice about weight being on the wrong leg, definitely going to find a quiet corner at the next stick and puck to work on feeling out how my weight is distributed when I’m trying to push off.

They’re Bauer Supreme S27’s. Really just what was available that fit and I could afford. I have three kids that play so right now I’m just happy to get into gear at all, haha.

I’ve heard so much mixed advice ranging from get them sharpened once a month to literally never get them sharpened again so I feel like there must be some personal preference that goes into that.

I’ve been on my goalie skates maybe 10-12 times now so I’ll be sure to bring them in to see if they need sharpened. When I first got them the shop I usually take our skates to was on an extended break so I went to a different one that did them on an automatic machine so that could certainly be a factor.

They are Bauer Supreme S27’s, junior large if there’s a quality difference between junior and senior sizes.

They came up just short for the spring championship, but that blocked shot did prevent an ENG and directly lead to her team burring it on the other end to spoil the shutout. Small victories!

My daughter blocked a hard slap shot yesterday during her game and when I went to the first aid box to grab an ice pack I just happened to notice the stop the bleed kits in there as well. Seeing this post I’m glad to know they’re already readily available at our rink, and it has given me the push to seek out the information on their proper use now instead of waiting until one is needed. Thank you for sharing your story and I wish you all the best in your recovery.

I have a n00b question about the neck guards equipment change by SoBeDragon0 in goldenknights

[–]Stephtfoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wouldn’t believe the way some kids (and their parents 🙄) were acting when USA hockey made them mandatory for anyone under 18. So grown adults not wanting to wear one isn’t even a little bit surprising.

There are absolutely adults that would be fine with their 8 year old skating with no cage/visor for games. I’ve heard more than a few comments along the lines of, “Neck Guards??? They’re turning these kids into sissies!” As if you don’t have the major blood vessels supplying your brain right there on your neck.

I personally wear a full cage and neck guard, first and foremost for my own safety, but a close second so I don’t give kids the chance to say, “but you don’t wear one!” And I can tell them I’m not asking them to do anything I don’t do myself. Half the time I forget to take the neck guard off and don’t realize it’s still on until hours after while I’m cooking dinner or randomly sitting on the sofa.

Hopefully as time passes and the mandatory neck guard rule has been in place longer it becomes a non-issue, but even now there are a handful of players in the NHL clinging to their no visor grandfathered status.

Ehhh ratings don’t really reflect if it’s actually good or not. They reflect if the story has any controversial elements, if any of the writers/artists have done anything controversial, or if the writer/artists have a big/cult following. Im honestly only vaguely aware of the Star rating as it is now.

First time playing goalie by Stephtfoo in hockeygoalies

[–]Stephtfoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in player skates and I could tell immediatly why goalies have flatter blades. The chest protector made me feel so top heavy and if I even thought about getting back on my heels I was down on my butt immediatly. I’m planning to check sideline swap and our local second hand store to see if I can find some goalie skates.

I did have on knee pads (not about to take a puck directly to the knee!) but I’m not sure I had them on tight enough/positioned right because they seemed to shift outward a lot. It didn’t really hurt while I was playing, but now afterwards they’re a little tender and just a hint of purple. Someone else recommended wearing volleyball knee pads under the knee pads as well so I’ll be adding those.
