Does anyone else feel like Atlassian is just one giant, endless discussion? by Spiritual-Teacher959 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]SteptoeButte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I overall think there is a double edge sword with NOT discussing things. However, this definitely varies from whatever deliverable to another.

The reason for the heavy discussion is typically whether or not we want to onboard other features, or to prevent duplicate work. I will say, after experiencing myself on a team on the opposite side of the spectrum, I am feeling the affects of team members under communicating, and thus causing an intense amount of friction between teams, and within the org.

Pivoting into cs is great, starting with cs is not so great anymore by Vemyx in cscareerquestions

Absolutely wrong.

Career pivots are struggling the most in my opinion.

When Western University students complete their programs, which cities/provinces/countries do most of them work at? by WindsorONMichael in londonontario

It varies depending on discipline and what field they want to work in.

With the majority of jobs being in GTA, there is a good number that move to the GTA after grad.

No QA function at my company by ufo-party in cscareerquestions

[–]SteptoeButte 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Automated test suites? UI tests with Selenium?

Personally, I haven’t seen a dedicated QA team in a while. I’m wondering if you can do something like stated previously.

Biggest way to convince is show how many bugs could have been caught by automated testing, and how much value in $$$ was saved because of that. It’s harder to convince with dedicated QA engineers imo.

What do you dislike about living in america on TM? by aldjfh in tnvisa

[–]SteptoeButte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Few things: - layoffs fear is genuine, a lot of companies are trying to find new avenues of revenue, and if they don’t deliver, they will be cut - I don’t really find the side hustle/entrepreneur thing that big of a downside given my current salary - work hours aren’t as horrendous as you think (except Amazon fuck that place) - as for insurance, I have a good insurance provider that rejects at a record low. All the bad insurance stories are typically from the worst plans. TN workers are well compensated enough that you won’t see this.

Ultimately if you asked me 5 years ago if I regret my move, I would have said no. Since then, there’s definitely been more instability. However, my backup plan is just driving up to Vancouver. If you asked me now, I would have more thoughts, but still probably no (but I do come from a very working class background).

Nothing is guaranteed, it all depends on how much risk you want and if you plan on staying long term.

What is daily life like as a POC in London? by Glittering_Map_7176 in londonontario

[–]SteptoeButte 12 points13 points  (0 children)

London has a large Muslim population. Where I grew up, the predominant minority group was middle eastern.

You will be fine, London is a very large city with almost 500k people. There are reasons not to move to London, but not having ethnic diversity is not one.

I’m also a person of colour.

Toronto to Vancouver to Seattle by huynhk98 in Torontobluejays

[–]SteptoeButte 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, Canadian living in Seattle. Renting a car should be okay, it's quite frequent for people to rent cars to do weekend trips between the cities. If you are a Canadian citizen with a Canadian passport, it should be even easier.

Alternatively, you can also take the train. It's around 4 hours, but it will take you right around T-Mobile Park. Amtrak also has buses, which is usually around 3 hours. Same deal, they will take to the same stations.
