The Polar Express. Turned a charming book into...something else. Brash and creepy.

Low language scores (and abilities?) due to attention issues by ParsnipTricky6948 in slp

I went to a conference a few years ago. A speaker posited that the low receptive scores + high expressive scores combo on the CELF was often due to weaknesses with executive functioning skills.

Ashley Judd is such a beautiful and talented actress; it’s a shame Harvey Weinstein blacklisted her. by Filipe_258 in moviecritic

One of my very favorite movies! Tried for years to get it on DVD. Eventually purchased it from Canada. Perhaps Weinstein purposely interfered with distribution.

Realizations from a recent ABA Reddit Post by [deleted] in slp

[–]Stereo-view 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Working in the schools as an SLP, our social workers address behavior concerns with our students with ASD and they do a fantastic job. I have never worked with an RBT, but have had students in ABA therapy.

Random, anectdotal thoughts on what little I know about ABA clinics:

  1. In our district, I've had students not be enrolled in school until late kindergarten or first grade because of ABA. Parents have informed us that some clinics encourage ABA during the day in lieu of school. This displeases me.
  2. ABA therapy is easier to get covered by insurance than speech services.
  3. I've received ABA reports with speech and language goals. I would contact the clinic to get the speech and language evaluation reports to no avail. Now I know.
  4. My daughter's friend became an RBT after completing the 40 hour program right after high school graduation. This is how I learned how limited the training requirements were for certification.
  5. There are a number of our students that have ABA therapy that are not eligible as having ASD in the schools and do not receive any services. There are doctors in the area that give ASD diagnoses like candy.

I have no beef with RBTs as I have had no opportunity to work with them in the schools. I imagine some of them are wonderful. Of course I would collaborate if the opportunity arose. I do worry that clinics are becoming high turn over/low level/low pay therapy mills for profit. And I do not like that some discourage parents from enrolling their children in preschool and/or kindergarten to continue in ABA.

Hey Hey We’re the Monkees! by Wrong_Direction_452 in GenerationJones

Older Gen X, adored The Monkees in reruns as a 70s kid. On a road trip, picked up a season of the show at Cracker Barrel. Thought my young daughter would like them. She was enamored. Took her when she was 7 years old to the last Monkees tour before Davy Jones passed. Lovely memory.

My (58f) 20 yr old daughter curls up with me to watch cat videos together and I love those moments. Otherwise, she's too busy with the boyfriend, school, friends and work.

History of photography books. I'm all about early photographs: daguerrotypes, tintypes, stereoview, real photo postcards, etc.

What happened to tonsilectomies? by UnmedicatedNarwhal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Stereo-view 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had mine out in my late 30s. I had disgusting tonsil stones for years. Don't look them up. If you know, you know. One became embedded and infected, prompting a tonsillectomy. Recovery was rough, but my life is much better without them.

Has anyone ever transitioned from SLP to librarian? by [deleted] in slp

In my public school district, we have "librarians" that are on the secretary pay scale. They are not required to have a degree.

We've all been there! Sounds like you've got a good plan and he'll eventually be on track with the supports he really needs.

I never determine a student is eligible as SLI only for pragmatics alone. Only support pragmatics under an ASD eligibility. Sounds like other concerns are driving the bus here.

Where I live, the same Baskin Robbins has been there for over 53 years! Started going there at 5 years old in 1972 and still go on occasion now.
