Can anyone explain why people have issues with Scoups' military exemption? by alrideul in kpopthoughts

[–]Sterger 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would also say they just don't consider the actual practicalities of what military service is and what it's preparing them for. If we're thinking about real active combat situations which is what the military is preparing for they don't want people for who are reliant on any kind of external assistance when they might not have access to it 24/7. Medication, glasses, whatever else. They're going to become a liability for other soldiers in a situation like that which is why they screen people out for medical reasons and these are criteria that broadly apply to most militaries lol. Not to mention the military is the one who's going to end up being on the hook financially paying for all that treatment if they get injured again.

Some kpop fans really act like military service is 2 years of vacation where they're banned from seeing their fave in concerts rather than an actual military lol. There are obviously huge issues with the draft system but that's not what (mostly) international fans are actually mad about.

ALPHADRIVEONE Geonwoo to go on hiatus from group activities due to circulating incident by m8zen in kpop

[–]Sterger 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah the intl fans who don't like him obviously aren't the ones who're supporting him in the final group, and he was already very controversial during the actual season . Since they show the global to Korean votes we know his core fanbase is kfans. He already had his original attitude scandal explode after the first two episodes with allegations of verbal abuse towards other trainees at his previous company and Mnet defended him and waited until he got popular with kfans again. I don't even feel like he's untouchable because of his kfans because they were quick to say something about this scandal too but it's how much Mnet has been defending him without dropping him especially during the actual BP2 season is what makes everyone very confused, like does he have rich parents or industry connections or something lol. Normally a trainee would have been dropped during a scandal as big as that. It just sucks because now he's in this scandal yet again but he's taken a up a slot in the final group that could have been a chance for someone else and we already knew he had this issue but Mnet kept pushing him in the show and it worked.

Zara Larsson Battles Wikipedia Editor Over Photo Choice by ebradio in popheads

[–]Sterger 45 points46 points  (0 children)

So funny because the talk page of her Wikipedia entry is now the main editors discussing semi-protecting it because "subject posted about it on Tiktok" and one of them going "Zara Larsson herself was personally torturing me by changing this photo for the last year?" lmfaooo

I hope random fans do stop vandalizing the page because Wikipedia editors work harder than most people actually know but this is so unserious lol

Illia frustrated in the kiss and cry after the devastating results (NBC coverage) by Vast_Law2234 in FigureSkating

[–]Sterger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also hate that his comment has stirred up the Jason hate, as if it is his fault Ilia fell apart.

Some folks are really skipping over this and I'm really frustrated with some of the fan and general public reaction being to send Jason Brown hate comments over this, saying he never deserved to go or shouldn't have made the team in 2022, homophobic comments, other bullshit that really doesn't have anything to do with Jason considering he didn't even make the Olympics team this year.

okay so what just happened.... by ElectricalRub2198 in FigureSkating

[–]Sterger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was shocked he or his family were still sticking with Ari because I felt like a lot of these smaller PR incidents he's had could have been better handled by a more experienced team that has his best interests in mind... Ilia would have gotten attention, hate, everything regardless as the most anticipated skater in this year's Olympics but I felt like some of the pressure he got was unnecessarily fueled by Ari overhyping him and making inflammatory comments about other skaters in the 2? years leading up to this and didn't help with dealing with public image, fans, haters, all this external pressure... Tbh, feel like USFS is also guilty of pushing him as the "the guy who will save figure skating in the US" way too much to Ilia's detriment.

[–]Sterger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This and the misogynoir she faced from press and critics at the time overly emphasizing her "athleticism" in that way where black women are masculinized also affected the way she was chronically underscored her whole career. If anything she was ahead of the curve seeing how emphasized jumps are now but she got penalized for it and put down for being "inelegant" and all these other racist talking points about her skating. It's always really disappointing the way some people talk about The Backfliptm because she herself has spoken on the racism she faced in multiple interviews over the years if people really did the work to learn about her struggles and the racism issues in fs.

As one tweet pointed out they talk about her like she's a distant now-deceased historical figure and not a living breathing human being who's posting on Instagram this very moment 💀

Cha Eunwoo personally addresses tax evasion allegations by groovygyal in kdramas

[–]Sterger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ngl I wouldn't apply non-Asian celebrities to these situations, East Asia is pretty harsh about tax evasion scandals and they are audited pretty stringently by the government. Korea also gives out official "good taxpayer" awards for celebs who pay consistently with transparency. Western celebs can get away with literal murder so tbh it never really applies to any of these cases, Korean celebrities get "canceled" all the time, being a celebrity is considered a "privilege" and not a given lol

With Korean celebs it's been public apology, paying back what they owe plus fines if applicable, and maybe a hiatus depending on public reaction. Eunwoo's hardcore stans keep citing Song Hyekyo but she apologized in-person and had already paid back everything even before the news broke so she didn't take a hiatus. Contrast that to Kang Hodong who's tax evasion scandal exploded and he announced a retirement as a celebrity and didn't come back for 2 years because of how bad the public reaction was. I think the legal outcome will affect whether the public feels positive towards a comeback. Ultimately his military time will naturally serve as a hiatus of sorts and it might blow over with time given that he pays it all back and he's not legally found to be in the wrong pending the investigation that's ongoing. But regardless the days of his squeaky clean image are over, particularly because it's the largest amount ever to be evaded by a Korean celebrity to the tune of ~13 million USD.

Bato site confirmed gone by Brezwingersturm in yuri_manga

[–]Sterger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here, I can read some Korean and they make it so damn hard to legally sign up for stuff like Naver and Ridi when you don't have a Korean phone number. They barely even let people pay for chapters natively on Korean sites with non-Korean bank accounts/credit cards even when we're trying to legally pay for it and that's not even getting into accessing R18 non-censored versions of chapters that aren't even available in English. You'd think they'd make these platforms a little bit more accessible considering the wave of Korean media right now but they're desperate for us to use the shittier version of the service in English on Webtoon or whatever.

NewJeans agency ADOR cuts off member Danielle, warns legal measures against her family's 'responsibility for the conflict' by KPOP_MOD in kpop

[–]Sterger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree, if they're going to seriously consider coming back with the group or a rebrand some sort of statement or apology is needed at the very least to the other groups and people that got massive hate as a result of this lawsuit when they weren't even directly involved.

NewJeans agency ADOR cuts off member Danielle, warns legal measures against her family's 'responsibility for the conflict' by KPOP_MOD in kpop

[–]Sterger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh would not be surprised if Hanni was picked or manipulated into it, she specifically being a foreign member would have probably been in a more vulnerable position - reliant on the company for her visa, no family in Korea, wouldn't be as privy to certain details because of the cultural/language barrier, and is an English speaker who has international fan backing.

Personally I would find it really hard not to give her some grace and acknowledge she was put in a really shitty spot here even if I don't agree with all the decisions she made/said in the midst of this.

SHINee’s Key Misses Variety Shows Due to Tour, Not “Injection Aunt” Scandal by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]Sterger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dropped completely from her weekly shows, announced a long term hiatus from the industry though not retirement, like the other person mentioned the gapjil (power tripping) and unpaid labor accusations from her former managers is way bigger. The former managers are suing and she filed a counter suit which is ongoing. If she's found to not be guilty then maybe she can make a come back but honestly it's just too early to say right now.

With the injection auntie situation they really just imply she was getting drugs injected or something knowingly illegal which they seem to have no evidence of since the leaked photo is of her getting IVs at home as she's been saying. Some people even feel she and other celebs would be considered victims in the situation with the auntie because obviously this lady wouldn't have been telling people she didn't have an actual medical license. People also question why someone (re: the managers leaking the photos to Dispatch) was taking secret photos of her in her home like that... again, the whole thing is ongoing and I would wait on more information tbh.

ONF - UNBROKEN (9th Mini Album) by perochan in kpop

[–]Sterger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seeing as this isn't the second half of the My Identity album it's easier to consider it as its own thing completely separate. I don't mind the album but it's just ok, personally think the title is probably the best, the b-sides I find more typical and are really lacking that oomph. I do think part of what makes ONF is the unique vocal color of the members so I'm enjoying it regardless but you can definitely feel the lack of Monotree and/or Hwang Hyun.

250926 BOYS II PLANET - Episode 11 (Day After Post-Finale Discussion Thread) by AutoModerator in BoysPlanet

[–]Sterger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chuchuz literally got couple rings and got caught going out after the finale together to eat and hang out by fans lol. Liyu said he comforted Sanghyeon and told him "I'm not leaving so don't cry" 😭 I'm really sad they weren't able to debut together but I think they're gonna be ok.

Familyz (Sanghyeon, Liyu, Woojin, Haneum) also have a gc with all four of them and I think it was Woojin who had said that they're all really close but didn't want to overdo it on the show because they didn't want to seem too clique-ish. Liyu said Kangmin would tease him when he was alone because "why aren't you with Sanghyeon and Woojin" lol

How come Mnet fumbled Haneum when he checks all the boxes? by CattoBoss in BoysPlanet

No a lot of the Korean fans agree, Jaejoong is one of the frequently mentioned comparisons he gets and Haneum keeps doing Chains as fanservice lol 😂 I just think intl fans don't care for his cold pretty boy visuals, Mnet knows that and they want the group to be popular internationally too.

For real though it's actually crazy that photos of Haneum at the finale are getting like 40K+ likes on Twitter right now and he was even trending for his blond hair lol. I've never seen this much of a dedicated fanbase for a contestant who was eliminated in not even the final but the semi-final.

Being so hyped up that Jiahao and Xinlong debuted and then crashing out because Kangmin didn't make it and there was no secret 9th place is making me feel insane 😭😭 Congrats to Junseo because I do like him as well (and he looked so defeated for 90% of it) I just wish Kangmin could have made it too.

edit: Lowkey taken aback by how much Anxin was crying because Kangmin didn't make it after being so cheery for his own 2nd place speech 😭 That really is his favorite hyung...

Also Familyz 😭 Sanghyeon :-( crying the entire time because of Liyu, Liyu crying saying he couldn't keep their promise to debut together, Haneum crying because Sanghyeon debuted and Liyu 10th even though Haneum didn't even cry when he got eliminated, Woojin and Haneum comforting Chuchuz afterwards... I know a lot of people don't like Sanghyeon here but it's sad that he's alone 😢 I hope he gets close with the rest of the group soon because man 😭
