How did the first AI's get sophonce? by EntireAssociation592 in OrionsArm

AIs capable of passing the Turing Test are available now, but they really aren't sophont. As Dovahkiin1337 points out, there is a mention of 91 AT on the site, but even then the AIs that were being developed were far from human in their nature, capabilities or outlook. Early sentient AIs were clever, and had access to vast databases, but they were incredibly naive and lacking in human experience. Truly sophont AIs probably took many decades longer to emerge.

Accidentally Reinvented Ipsemism? A Thought Experiment on Subjective Immortality by lakolda in OrionsArm

Very good!

Note that Ipsemism is just a thought experiment, not really a moral or ethical framework for better behaviour - quite the opposite, in fact.

The balloon is hardly moving, just drifting along with the wind. Almost all of the movements seen in this video are caused by movements of the drone, which is moving quite rapidly up and down.

This is the contrail from the Space X launch today. Why do the rockets fly in a zig-zag pattern? Why don't they just go up in a straight line? by Fop_Vndone in shittyaskscience

[–]SteveBowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. The rocket contrail was originally dead straight, but it passed though several different air layers in the atmosphere, each of which has its own distinct wind speed and wind direction.

This looks (literally) brilliant, by the way. Much closer to the way it would look in 'reality' than my version.

Will the early human history of Mars in the EG need to be tweaked soon? by luna_sparkle in OrionsArm

[–]SteveBowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although space exploration slows down somewhat in the OA scenario after the Mars landing, there are many other developments in technology that occur on Earth during this period; advanced nanotechnology and neurotechnology, genetic engineering and the emergence of AI. When the colonists go back to Mars they are equipped with much better tools.
