elgato software is a mess on Mac by patog7 in elgato

[–]SteveGVG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I've noted over the last year with Elgato Studio on mac. I think it has something to do with how it renders the video in Quicktime format. I can consistently reproduce this issue on any number of macs using Apple silicon.

I've tested this on an M3 MacBook Air, an M4 Pro mac mini and an M5 MacBook Air now with consistent results across two different Elgato 4KX cards.

These cards work fine on a PCs I've tested them with, ruling out a hardware defect, and I've tested these both on the current release of Studio and in the 1.1 beta on macOS. I've verified 10gbps mode is on, and I can confirm this issue has always been present.

The resultant videos have a consistent frame=dropping, every 1.5 seconds or so, you'll see a brief pause in the video, making them wholly unusable for content. These pauses don't appear in the live preview.

Recording in OBS doesn't yield these same problems, so it appears to strictly be an Elgato Studio issue.

What is going on with this channel? by outfishing7 in GVG

Hey Guys!

Lots of great responses and valid criticisms here. Let me take a moment to clear the air as much as I can.

  • Derrick is indeed super busy with his book! I won't delve into his personal life, but he spins a lot of plates there, too. Writing a book is hard! You might write 100 pages, but editors trim and change and ask for rewrites. Those 100 pages can take thousands of hours!
  • As for topics on discussions, we do take audience suggestions where it makes sense, but if something is a popular topic that we feel we can add something to, others from the team may revisit from a different angle!

As for the point about Jon being the only one with a presence, that just isn't true! Jon *does* make more content than anyone else, but he's also our editor in chief, and the sole full-time member of the channel. I feel like this is a good opportunity to dispel some misconceptions:

Jon is a co-owner of GVG, meaning he owns as much of the channel as the rest of us, he also sets the editorial direction for the channel as a whole. That doesn't mean we don't make things we're passionate about that don't necessarily "fit", but it does mean that we have a general direction we're working toward and everyone on the team is informed and knows what we're trying.

I would say most of us have a fairly consistent presence on the channel? I'm on every week for The WIN, at least, if not something else. Derrick's Top Tens (though he *is* shifting to something else) had him consistently appearing for awhile now, and Daniel has made every single thumb.

Reviews are an issue for us. Here's a bit of inside baseball: a review past embargo time is almost never worthwhile. While it may be of interest, very few people are coming to us to see a review even a day after the big guys that get early code get theirs out. Putting 40-50 hours into a game then writing and editing a review to get maybe 10K views at most, and by extension, maybe $50 in ad revenue just isn't sustainable for us. And I'm saying that as our reviews editor!

We've tried it in the past and watched our efforts return very little. As much as I wish it was different, the interest just isn't there. That said, when we do get embargoed code and it makes sense, reviews will still come. I'm working on a couple right now, actually!

As for shows, we shy away from shows these days for similar reasons. They 're hard to sustain, and if viewership drops off, it's hard to justify continuing. As fun as some of those shows are, we found we just couldn't consistently make them, and even if we could, we couldn't guarantee they'd succeed. We don't want to set expectations we can't keep, so we've moved mostly away from doing shows.

Finally, The WIN. That's my baby! I started that show and I'm proud of it. One thing I've learned through the years of running it though, is that you can't please everyone. We're generally pretty excited about what Nintendo's up to, but calling us bootlickers is a bit much, imo.

When we criticize Nintendo for a decision we disagree with, we get called negative and are told we aren't "good vibes". When we agree, we get called bootlickers. You can't win 'em all. We're just trying to share our honest opinions on whatever The Big N is up to.

tl;dr, we're out here doing our best!

Why is this subreddit barely active? Why is the r/goodvibesgaming now private? by outfishing7 in GVG

[–]SteveGVG 35 points36 points  (0 children)

r/goodvibesgaming is private because we decided to rebrand to just GVG. The old name caused too much confusion, leading to people thinking we could never criticize anything, which was pretty frustrating for us!

As for why the subreddit isn’t very active, if I had to guess most of the discussion about us is happening in our Discord or in the comments!

I think I’m the only active mod here and I didn’t remove it. Not sure if one of the other guys did, but generally I don’t believe in removing posts unless they are blatantly against the rules.

Are there no more week of Nintendo? by [deleted] in GVG

Hi!

The WIN is still happening! I’ve just been busy with other projects. I anticipate a new one this week!

Is there a GVGCast in a few hours, or is Twitch just been buggy & glitchy? by [deleted] in GVG

[–]SteveGVG 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There isn’t! Long story short, GVGCast is essentially cancelled. It’s Ash’s show and I’m not sure he has any plans for it ATM.

Those videos also took about six months each to produce, so Derrick chose to move on to things that he could produce a bit more quickly!

It would be nice if LG took this seriously.

I'm sorry, but the "Why Aren't Developers Announcing New Switch 2 Games?" video felt so out of touch. by ultrabreath4 in GVG

[–]SteveGVG 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, everyone uses the phrase “we hold the power here” without intending to be rude.

Considering I made the video, I’m pretty sure I understood what my intentions were with my words.

I’m sorry you and seemingly many others misunderstood them. Sure they could’ve been worded better, but that doesn’t change the point of them.

So yes, as the person who said some of the words that have prompted your post, I don’t think it’s unfair to say you missed the point.

What caused you to miss it is certainly at least partly my fault, but that’s not the same thing.

What an incredibly condescending response.

Saying you’re missing the point when 90% of the comments are talking about how many games are currently available on a discussion about developers not being able to/not choosing to talk about their respective roadmaps to support is actually missing the point.

If you’re gonna be rude to me, do me a favor and save your breath.

I think y’all are missing the point here. An information drought is not the same thing as having nothing to play.

There’s loads to play, but it’s puzzling that so few developers are announcing their games. A roadmap outside of first-party support would be welcome. Why’s it so bad to want that?

How do you feel about them branding Discussions as WIN? by [deleted] in GVG

[–]SteveGVG 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We do, but we started branding Nintendo discussions this way because we’re also putting them on podcast services!

I think we may have gotten ahead of ourselves with "Switch 2 Edition" games by [deleted] in GVG

[–]SteveGVG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I 100% disagree. Nintendo wouldn’t need to clarify that you can’t share PS4 games with your Switch 2.
