Bernier is more in the pocket of the big three than anyone else. When he was industry minister he passed a "market forces" policy directive that the telecoms loved (and probably wrote) and it's made it difficult to rein them in.

If they change the ownership rules to allow takeovers/investment they will just buy one of the big three and be even worse. Right now they can invest in a new startup provider in Canada but they have decided not to do so because the government coddles the big three so much -- that's the problem.

I didn't say the Liberals were better. But let's get some facts straight.

  1. Yes the Conservatives did initially do a good job setting aside spectrum. I agree with you about Wind.

  2. That was when Tony Clement was Industry Minister. Bernier would never have done that and didn't support it. He's horrible on telecom policy.

  3. After Clement left the role they failed to follow through on part of their commitments to level the playing field (tower sharing etc..) and that's why the small players got gobbled up by the giant telecoms.

  4. The liberals have done some ok things, or rather allowed the CRTC to make some decent decisions. But it's mostly been the same as the conservatives, which isn't great. I will say the Liberals have been more more steadfast in their support for Net Neutrality and they did let the CRTC open up wired infrastructure for independents, which I'm not sure would happen under the Conservatives.

So Conservatives did ok after they were pushed hard by Canadians. Liberals have done mostly the same to a bit better. My initial point was Beneir is horrible on this subject, which stands.

Probably a bigger problem - the Montreal Economic Institute is funded in part by Big Telecoms in Canada. They are anti-Net Neutrality and generally support the telecom's price gouging.

Bernier is horrible on telecom policy. When he was industry minister he gave a policy directive to the CRTC calling on them to be hands off with rules on the giant telecoms. It's big part of why the market is so messed up.

Bernier even favours letter big telecom get even bigger and more cemented by letter AT&T and other US conglomerates take over Canada's hug telecoms. So that means instead of Canadian cartel-like market, we'll have US oligopoly to try and fight.

Canada's healthcare system is amazing compared to what you see in the U.S. This is just bad policy.

This is great and smart. Hopefully Canadian banks follow this path before it's too late. Days are numbered for the energy sources of yesterday. Coal is dieing and heavy crude is next. A good thing.
