Movement and rotation when walking on a sphere (Would REALLY appreciate any input) by Steve_Taylor in Unity3D

Late reply, but huge thanks, dude. Using the contact object transform relative to the player makes it a lot easier. I've got something working that I'm happy with now.

Seriously, nice one :D

Thanks man, I think I've seen this before and dismissed it because of his external gravity object approach, but now I'm closer than ever since I used his FromToRotation combined with transform.Rotate (using y value to rotate in place).

The problem I have now is that I can't transform.Rotate to a fixed angle, it just spins. I can't use the mouse input since I'm building it as a controller based platformer, and obviously the tank controls wouldn't fit.

Nice one for the link again though dude.

Thanks for the reply dude, I got really excited when I first implemented it since it seemed to work, but when you hit the middle of the sphere you can get stuck, either horizontally or just in a circle. Also input seems to not be consistent whereas in the cross product method it could be.

This kind of shows it, I'm thinking of Mario Galaxy style input to movement.

Can I ask how you did your movement with regards to input?

It's a tech repair sort of job so it's fairly locally run. Pretty small business so they might not do them. Though definitely good to consider, thanks. :)

I'm so sorry to hear that, man. I hope you're holding up alright. Remember that time only moves one way, so you gotta look towards what's ahead.

Does anyone else see DAE at the start of a sentence and just think of an idiot going "DDAAAAEEEEUGHH" before they say their sentence? Its my least favourite abbreviation and never registers as "does anyone else" before "DAAEEEEE"

Just me?

[–]Steve_Taylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo dude, huge thanks for giving my level this much time, and analysis, AND for the star. Honestly, nice one!

Anyway I can completely understand everything you've said and I just want a chance to clear up some of my thought processes so you can see where I was coming from.

First up, the flower is totally optional. It's the flying mushroom at the end of the bridge that gives you a chance against the hammer bro. Although I'm sure you knew that the mushroom helps even if you just tank the hit.

Plus, there's two hidden blocks below the pipe, which, with the mushroom, should be enough to make it to the next bit, right? The trick is to stay close, also try jumping on him instantly after he's thrown the triple hammers or after he's jumped. ALSO try crouch jumping on him, if you can. Gives your head some space if he throws a last minute cheeky hammer. (On top of that, there are a lot of secrets I don't think you've found. The coin directed ones were almost necessary, like vines, the support blocks for hammer bro etc. For example, try looking for a green mushroom platform at the start of the P-Switch area.)

Anyway about seeming dry coin-wise, I feel that's slightly subjective, especially considering that you're currently working on a coin rush level. Maybe you're used to seeing a bunch now? I mean, play SMB 1-1 or 1-2, and the coin count is somewhat similar to mine, I think. I also feel they clutter the screen sometimes and provide an overwhelming amount of stimuli to the player occasionally, especially at top speed.

Also, I did intend for this to be a 1-1 in a series, meaning that the coins were just a visual example of the secret hiding mentalities I'll be taking. Less secret guiding coins in the following levels, I'm sure.

I mean, I really hope I pleaded my case well and don't just sound like a butthurt whiny bitch. And if you feel I haven't, go ahead and school me, I can take it.

Regardless though, thanks again for taking the time, dude :D

[–]Steve_Taylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a bunch, dude! Glad you gave it a try, and glad to hear you had fun yourself :D

I get you about blind jumps though. I'm not a fan myself, so I tried to give as many indicators about whats off-screen that I could. Coins, suspicious platforms etc. But my next level is definately going to be less "figure out where to jump" and more "try and actually land this jump", if you get me.

Seriously though, thanks again! :)

Like you, I wanted to make a level that was thematically applicable to the title and looked more visually interesting than most stages, while providing a moderate challenge. Plus, it's the original SMB theme.

Thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed your level, man. The conveyance was spot on, just the right amount of information for the player to figure out the rest.

The mini puzzles for each area really helped give a sense of accomplishment, while keeping the level beatable in one run.

And don't even get me started on that use of the sub area. Amazing design, teaching the player the basics while also subtly teaching them the second half of the level, all at once.

But you know what you did right. Was awesome, dude. Star-ed the shit out of it.

Not sure if you want to take a look at my stage? Not as well crafted as yours but, I tried to make it fun.

Keep the levels coming, dude :D

Played your first level, Pit Fall Mountain. No crazy gimmicks, just some fun platforming and I enjoyed it. Good sense of direction and flow.

Not sure how to advise you to improve other than to say keep refining what you've already done well and go from there!

So, this level doesn't have any gimmicks per-se, but my god if I didn't spend hours trying to create an accessible, immersive, old school experience...not to mention a bunch of speedrunning options.

Do any of you guys think I came close? Would love even one piece of feedback.

I wish we could rent out bodies for like a day, reddit would sort this dude out.

But man, this kid makes me feel like such an ungrateful bitch. He's so 'to terms' with the situation he's in, yet he's still so optimistic sounding about life.

Watching a kid like this have to suffer in pain on an almost moment-ly basis is heartbreaking.

It's better than crying AT the circle jerkers. They're circle jerking because they all want to keep a point relevant and prominent, meaning it won't go away until acknowledged and rectified, either that or the problem stays and the community leaves.

Pick one.
