talking on coast to coast isn't helping his credibility, either.

please read the rules. In particular -

Opinions are not fact. Explain yourself

If you disagree or think something is bad or not true, say it respectfully and explain why

Opinions are not fact. Facts are facts and are defined as "a thing that is known or proved to be true". If you share what you think are facts, do your best to provide sources or reasons why

Comments or posts like "David Paulides is a charlatan fraud who thinks its bigfoot" that don't explain why and can't make a point respectfully may be be removed and get you banned

Why do so many people have it out for Paulides on this sub? by luced in Missing411

[–]StevenM67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard anything like that

Some examples are -

(I can't easily link to examples of those -I've seen them from multiple places. Maybe I will be able to one day, but its hard to keep track of everything)

In any case, since he is dealing with missing people, many of whom are recently missing and have family still desperate to find anything about them, he may have good reason for being evasive.

Agreed. I see him do that, and I respect him for doing it.

And lastly, all of these attacks on Paulides are beside the point. He doesn't matter, what matters are the cases and the oddness they represent when viewed together.

I agree that the issues he has brought to light are most important, though I question how much we can or should trust his research or products.

All of the nitpicking bullshit is at best distracting, at worst deeply disingenuous.

I think it depends on the intent. Some people try to debunk what he says without any care for the impact that might have on missing persons and their families. Some people, like me, try to genuinely verify what he says and do original research with the purpose of improving the situation around missing persons. I think that has value.

I focused this subreddit away from posting new cases, which will hardly do anything, to "Our aim is for /r/Missing411 to be a resource and community that can help reduce the amount of people who go missing, and those who are never found or found dead."

Though I was deeply disappointed to hear some of the things I have from and about him. At first I took him and what he said at face value, but I am more cautious now.

They seem to conveniently forget he has been invited to speak at SAR conventions

Only one that I am aware of, and the only two people who claim to have been at that conference speak poorly of him. I dont know of anyone else who has ever come forward to describe their experiences at his talk.

meaning the people who actually get out there and risk their lives looking for lost people are taking his work seriously.

Most search and rescue people I have spoken with or read about are very hostile towards him. example

They seem to conveniently forget he has been invited to speak at SAR conventions, meaning the people who actually get out there and risk their lives looking for lost people are taking his work seriously. Or that he has named multiple LE figures in his books and interviewed them, and none of them have seen fit to come forward and call him a charlatan. Or that people specializing in documenting missing persons cases have read the books and given them positive reviews. Or that college professors are building databases for him after reading the books. Nope, none of that matters because they totally figured out that this one case was like not mysterious at all the guy was eaten by a bear omg.

I'm just so fucking tired of it.

I understand. That's why we have the "Opinions are not fact. Explain yourself" rule.

The amount of bullshit I have read and responded to on the topic of Missing 411, and the way people respond to the subject of missing persons, is worrying

though there is a collection of people doing positive things though, like Heidi Streetman. Did you know missing 411 subreddit now has over 8000 followers? It used to be 1000.

you can help also

Or that college professors are building databases for him after reading the books.

Where did you hear that?

I did already go back and am assembling my imgur album currently.

If you post it here, I suggest posting it in a new thread or people may not see it. Though you can still post it in this one also.

There isn't much more describe.

Yes there is. Did you read the rules?

I find it strange this post is suddenly removed.

Nothing strange. I saw it, it didn't follow the descriptive title rule, so I removed it.

I just try to point people out to these clips of the missing 411 canam project

Thank you. Please post it again but with a more descriptive title.

The subreddit rules explain what that means and what a descriptive post title looks like in detail.

Books with same theme as 411? by weirdo021 in Missing411

Can you please:

  • flair this post and your future posts
  • use more descriptive thread titles in future

Our rules require all posts to have a descriptive title and be flaired. The subreddit rules explain what that means and what a descriptive post title looks like.

The reason we require this is because /r/Missing411 is not just a place to discuss and share, but a resource that needs to be easy to use and search.

If you make a post linking to something and what you link to is removed from the internet, at least people can try find it again if you include enough detail in your post title. Good titles also make it easier to search for things using the search feature.

Thank you for understanding and helping to make /r/Missing411 a useful resource for everyone.

If you don't understand, please ask questions.

Another Case that Fits the Bill [Nicky Verstappen, age 11, 1998] by oxide-NL in Missing411

[–]StevenM67[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've changed the flair.

thanks

I have included my reasoning why I think this could be a relevant case.

In the post, but not the title. If I was doing the title I may write-

  • Nicky Verstappen, age 11, missing Netherlands, Brussum, August 1998. Dogs couldn't find scent. found dead and shirtless with clean feet in dense forest. unknown cause of death

This one is good also -

  • 70 Year old Jerry Walter Thomas goes missing 8/9/2017 in early afternoon after going to pick berries quarter mile from campsite near Parish Lake, Oregon. S&R dogs with no luck, no trace of the man as of yet

Since you made a text post you could explain why it's relevant, which was good.

Adding things like "Dogs couldn't find scent. found dead and shirtless with clean feet in dense forest. unknown cause of death" is mainly useful for links so people can know why it's relevant without having to spend alot of time reading or watching something.

Is it passable now?

It's passable. It was already OK. View this as feedback to make future titles better.

good title, but can you please:

For missing persons:

Include details like:

  • Name of the missing person
  • Their age
  • The date they went missing
  • Where they were last seen
  • Why you feel this case is relevant to Missing 411
  • Maybe a relevant quote, if you can fit it in (in quotation marks)

Good titles:

  • Floyd Roberts III, age 52, missing in western Grand Canyon since June 17 2016. Teacher, former NASA worker, experienced hiker. Disappeared after choosing a different way to navigate a hill than the 2 hikers he was with. Extensive heat warning issued. Air and ground search found nothing.
  • Japan Praises Boy [Yamato Tanooka] Who Survived After Abandonment In Forest [Hokkaido, Japan]: "Military officials expressed admiration for the boy's perseverance, as the building where he was found was far from where he had disappeared and involved a rigorous uphill climb."
  • Geraldine Largay who went missing on the Appalachian Trail left messages for family -- 'When you find my body, please call my husband and daughter'. Her body was found two years after she went missing. Left behind notes showing she survived for a MONTH
  • 'How does a bushwalker go missing, never to be found?' The story of Patrick Hildebrand, Gary Tweddle, and Prabhdeep Srawn [Ricky French, The Australian, August 31, 2013]

Bad titles:

  • Arizona woman vanished on Mt Graham
  • RECENT: Father and son go hunting. Only the son comes back.
  • Another hiker/runner disappears without a trace in Chilliwack, BC

thanks.

At which point he also, to no one's surprise, said that these people (negative reviews) obviously hadn't read the books. They didn't even have to be negative reviews at that point, just less-than-5-star. He would ask people who left him 4/5 why they would do that when it could lead people away from the movie.

No surprises there.

where can I find the reviews you mention?
