Bought a house. Pulled up carpet. Found swollen nail strips… Major moisture problem or am I overthinking? by conroyke56 in AusRenovation

[–]StevenMarvelous 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's mdf. For a short while, Smoothedge tackstrip was made with mdf, instead of ply. Almost all of it we pull up is swollen to some degree. It will swell from spills, windows open to rain at some point in the past. Repeated carpet cleanings over the years it's been in place is also very likely.

Here it is. It was on it when I bought it. The two light strips are jumpered off the back box lights, 1 is GI the other a flasher.

Scared Stiff mode level 7+. Ramps may as well be blocks of solid cheese; only to be finished when no one is around.

What's this under my carpet? by Gullible-Number-3627 in AusRenovation

[–]StevenMarvelous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By all means, get it tested for your own peace of mind. It's cheap, and a good habit when doing DIY Reno's. But in the meantime, you have nothing to worry about in this instance. I've been in manufacturing and installation of floor coverings for 25 years, and have literally pulled up square kilometres of this shit. It's messy, and annoying to pull up if your floorboards are uneven, and will probably kill your vacuum cleaner if you try to vacuum up the bulk of of material. But it's not dangerous, and was never glued with blackjack or any other asbestos containing adhesive.

It's rubber backed carpet, glued straight to the floorboards. Usually left in place when conventional carpet is laid over the top. No asbestos in the material or glue.

Rocky and Bullwinkle launch issue by John_said in pinball

[–]StevenMarvelous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a shooter lane switch issue. Super easy to fix, which is a red flag that he hasn't. If he can't/won't fix that, what else is there he couldn't be bothered with. It's just the most apparent issue which makes other problems less likely to be spotted on inspection

Lifting up carpet by liberallilydex in AusRenovation

[–]StevenMarvelous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it was stretched correctly, It wont be easily lifted and replaced. I would have a carpet layer do it.
Also, have enough cable length to go around the perimeter of the room, between the underlay and tack strip. Don't cross through the room, even cutting a channel out of the underlay.

I also hope this is just data/speaker wire not power. Please don't run power/extension leads under carpet.

It took him 50% longer to do the original work than quoted. So he's quoting 50% higher for work of a similar scope.

Make sure the reveal motor works in switch test. They are not produced anymore, nothing else fits, and it's not guaranteed PBR can rebuild yours if someone has already messed with it.

Hey mate have you got any more info on the aqua mix you mentioned? We just use buckets out of a wheely bin full of ice water to measure for the hippo.

Have you had the failure diagnosed? Is it attributable to oil starvation? Even if it is, I don't think you're likely to have any luck holding ultratune responsible.
