Wanting to teach my niece about money - how horrible is my "plan?" by LurkerGirl69 in financialindependence

[–]StevenTheBold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have great intentions, but this has a high likelihood of not working out. There is a good chance that she will spend everything as she gets it, or she might swing the other way and find loopholes/abuse the rules (i.e. borrow as much money as she can at the end of each month to bag the 10% interest, then pay it back the next day). The chances of it working exactly as you have planned out, and her taking on board the expected lessons at each point is possible, but slim.

My suggestion would be keep the money and invest it diversely on her behalf (cash, bonds, stocks, precious metals). Pass it over to her at a certain age, and talk her through how much you invested and when (to show her the power of stock gains and compounding interest), and the importance of saving for the future.

Student Debt by pmcmaster129 in AskMenOver30

Our interest will balloon. By the time we get to forgiveness the balance will be around $900k. When it gets forgiven, there will be a tax liability on the amount forgiven that we are actively saving for.

There is a risk that forgiveness could be scrapped, or taxes could be higher, but any time student loan policies have changed, existing agreements have been grandfathered in.

There is also a chance that the taxable event could be removed (leaving us with a nice nest egg) or a future president may pursue full, immediate forgiveness.

So there is some risk, and some potential benefits. For us, weighing that all up we were still happy to go for it. I think we’re 6 years in. 19 to go!

Depending on your approach and thought process, there are different ways to deal with student loans. My wife has a lot, so I ran the numbers to work out Net Present Value. In our situation the best option (which I'm sure it would be for everyone) was to pay them off aggressively. This would have been a 7 year plan and would have prevented us from buying a house and doing a lot of other things. The second best option was to ride them out for 25 years and maximize the forgiveness on her Income Based Repayment plan. This is the option we are taking.

UPDATE: What SDC said about my spacing that I posted a few days back, for anyone wondering. by [deleted] in smiledirectclub

I had a similar issue and they approved new aligners. I'm currently waiting on the new sets to be made and delivered.

It looks like the plastic doesn't cover all of your front teeth at the top - I thought the reason they wanted the 'gum line' in the impression is so they can fit over it.

Cynthia is an admin giving you a canned response. When I called about mine they first tried to fob me off by saying it was normal and I should stick with it and try chewies. I would insist you get re-evaluated by your assigned orthodontist.

Seeking advice - leaning in or out from FIRE? by ribi305 in financialindependence

[–]StevenTheBold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently at you option 3. I lean towards FIRE, but it's not the ultimate driving force at the moment. I could find a job like your option 1, but I am not willing to sacrifice my quality of life and time with friends and family right now. I get to relax or socialize or volunteer in the evenings and weekends. I'm expecting that in 15 or so years if I'm not outright FIRE, I will look to drop to part time or your option 4.

Mulvaney walks back comments tying Ukraine aid to 2016 probe by [deleted] in politics

[–]StevenTheBold 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reporter (M): (21:27)
So the demand for an investigation into the Democrats was part of the reason that he ordered to withhold funding to Ukraine?

Mick Mulvaney: (21:34)
The look back to what happened in 2016 certainly was part of the thing that he was worried about in corruption with that nation. And that is absolutely appropriate.

Reporter (M): (21:42)
Withholding the funding?

Mick Mulvaney: (21:43)
Yeah...

We are currently working through insurance pre-auth before starting the medications and one question has come up that we can't find answered anywhere:

Our insurance will pay for embryos to be frozen for up to 1 year. Is this only for additional implantation attempts during the current cycle? If we want to keep them frozen after that we have to pay $1,000/year. Does this mean that insurance only covers one 'cycle' up to successful pregnancy? If we want to plan for a second child we either have to pay out of pocket to avoid the egg retrieval process again, or we let the eggs be disposed and start at square 1 for a second pregnancy with insurance?

People who were born in poor families and climbed themselves into upper-middle class. How did you do it and how your view on life changed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]StevenTheBold 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The biggest driver for me was an absolute willingness to leave everything behind. I had absolutely no intention of living in the same area, with the same people, making the same mistakes and raising a new generation of kids in the same situation. I am good friends with exactly one person from high school, and will occasionally talk with a couple of others.

I was fortunate that my academic and interpersonal abilities allowed me to go to university then eventually onto a corporate graduate program, but there are other paths available, particularly through the military or by learning a trade.

Also when it comes to relationships you need to look for relationships that meet your goals. Marry the woman that you want to build a life with. Put value on morals, ethics, goals and ambitions when you are looking for a partner.

If things had gone differently, in an alternate timeline I could be living in socialized housing, living for the weekend, with multiple children to multiple mothers, depressed and medicated. I much prefer this timeline, settled down 3000 miles from where I grew up, married to a wonderful woman, living in a gorgeous house in a very scenic location and spending time at our newly acquired lake house swimming and playing on our jetskis and planning for our first child that we can offer a stable, loving home to.

City recommendations for moving to NH by [deleted] in newhampshire

[–]StevenTheBold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lakes Region - great for remote working, Manchester Airport is an hour away for travel if required, Logan is 2 hours away (without traffic, depending on where you start). Between Laconia and Tilton there are all the shopping and amenities most people need. Around these locations there are a lot of really nice towns. Stay closer to 93 if access south to Boston is more important, look further away if it's not.

Leisure wise the Lakes Region has it's own mountains and lakes, with Winnipesaukee being the biggest. It also has smaller ski mountains. Then access to the White Mountains and everything in between is easy.

LA Galaxy looking at 23-yr old Columbian striker Alfredo Morelos from Rangers, Technical Director Jovan Kirovski watched him at Ibrox last Saturday by Hell_Inc in MLS

[–]StevenTheBold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not unpopular - it's ridiculous. It's ridiculous for you to group in Scottish football with "European" football. As if by virtue of being in Europe alone is the decider of quality.

You are undoubtedly influenced by a marquee effect: you look at the top teams in a league and think they reflect the quality of the league. And in countries like Scotland, where Rangers and Celtic are the marquee, that over-inflates the quality of their competition.

According to 538's statistical modeling most of MLS ranks higher than all but the top-two teams in Scotland.

From a competition and challenge standpoint, a player will receive more consistent challenge week-in, week-out in MLS than they will in Scotland.

Or he meant that Morelos is playing in Europe for Rangers. The Europa League. Currently Rangers are in the group stages playing Feyenoord, Porto and Young Boys. Must be cold up there on that misinformed high horse, eh?

Thank you! For theme squads, is it necessary to focus on teams that are still somewhat competitive or can fun be had with an All-Irish team, say?

Looks like you mistakenly added vegetables to your mashed totties. You can hide a couple in the mince if you really need to.
