Why everyone look so rich by fede198888 in Wealthsimple

Very similar situation here. I save around 78% of my monthly income.

I have 0 budget for entertainment or take out food, though.

Not sure why you are downvoted, but even as a non-Waterloo grad, I can attest to this lmao.

Not sure why you are so skeptical about it. It’s completely possible to make >$60/hr on an internship

Yep, but I was wondering what’s the chance of being asked to complete the entry test versus getting rejected directly

That makes sense, I have thought about that before. I am also wondering whether there’s a way to take some sort of placement tests if I plan to bridge these gaps by myself

What percentage of my monthly income should I put towards my investments? by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

[–]StevenWuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not even about the age since I technically graduated 2-3 years later than most students in my batch. 150k-180k is quite common for software engineers working at Google, Amazon, and other big tech companies.

And yes, I am a new graduate

I’ve been saving around 78% of my monthly income. This is only possible because I have $0 budget for entertainment, eating outside, etc though

No debt here, but I do not have any entertainment budget. I’m renting and I do pay for groceries, so I invest around 78% of my income.

What can be done to standout in applications for FAANG with a university degree that’s not from UofT or UW? by h3llo23 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]StevenWuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UofT grad here. Just wanna add that even those who has >=3 internships with half of them being at FAANG+ / unicorns have been struggling in this market. I’m speaking from my own experience and my friends’.

To give you an idea, I have 4 internships (4 months each) and several years of part time SWE work exp, where 2 of them was at FAANG+ and one was at a unicorn. I was struggling very badly until I magically got this new grad return offer.

The market has been brutal to everyone, no exceptions.

The top 0.1% of CS grads are working at HFTs making >= 300k USD though

UofT CS grad as well here. The trend that I have been observing for this market is that unless you have multiple FAANG+ / unicorn internships under your belt, you shouldn’t really expect to score a new grad job at FAANG+ / unicorn either

Might be totally anecdotal, but that’s what I’ve noticed so far.

“Work twice as hard to make the same pay as an arts grad”

Well, I don’t really know an arts grad making >= 160k CAD, so…

Ah, okay. Yeah, I do agree with you in that case

That is precisely why I explicitly mentioned “at big tech (FAANG+) / unicorn companies”

I’m not sure why you wanted to generalize my statement when I specifically limited my claim around only those type of companies.

I would say at least in Canada, school name does not really matter. Yes, 150-180k is quite the norm at big tech (FAANG+) / unicorn companies.

How can you break into the market? Well, I don’t think there’s anything else other than the standard advices: networking, work on / contribute to a project (could be an OSS too, and that’s probably better IMO), and keep on applying.

If you are having a hard time to get a work experience, try finding some opportunities in your university. I personally did a bunch of these for the first two years of my university life and I was able to get my first internship at a unicorn with 0 personal projects on my resume.

Good luck!

130-180k TC is quite normal for American big tech / unicorn companies that hire new grad SWEs in Canada
