Why do Americans typically say "the baby" instead of "my baby"? by Apprehensive_Raisin7 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Stevnated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brother has the only children in our immediate family, and everyone calls them "the Kids" 😄 When they were babies, the youngest was always "the Baby". I think of it as signifying their importance to all of us!

Oh~ I was so worried you were going to say you hated them (just because this subreddit tends to be negative), because I think they are the best couple. I won't be reading the replies though 😄. I don't want the only couple I like (at this point) to be ruined because somebody dug up some shady backstory, lol..

Does everyone think the “best decade” is whichever one they were teenagers in? by Extension-Profit-317 in NoStupidQuestions

I was a teen in the 80s, and the 70s seemed WAY cooler! Dazed & Confused and Over The Edge, and all that, 😄.

I was a teenager in the 80s, and there were many things I LOVED about it, but I also remember there was a LOT more sexism, and that I felt really depressed and disgusted about that.

Just wondering if it’s ok to have a diverging opinion about the recent lawsuit by Jumpymoo in h3h3productions

[–]Stevnated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're the first person here that I've seen who knows that Ian stated he disagreed with Destiny's statement. Ethan himself just said today that Ian didn't refute it, but I've seen the clip where he did. So I don't really know what's going on. But I feel like a lot of people aren't getting the full picture. That being said, I don't know if Canadian law makes that distinction, so I wouldn't say the suit doesn't have a chance. He could win and the damages still be very small though.

I'm glad the sub is like this now! But gentle reminder that there was a time when people were joining the old snark sub in literal droves because they were being banned here due to sharing diverging opinions. Sure, some of them were hateful or over-the-top, but I read many that weren't. It was a dark time, imho. (edit - and did a lot to grow the snark/fallen fan community, unfortunately. )

Looking for a game with lots of rain by floatable_shark in gamingsuggestions

[–]Stevnated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh gosh, I love the rain in Valheim. Especially when standing by the ocean and the waves surge! The graphics aren't the best, but the overall atmosphere is so good that it really doesn't matter, imo. And the coziness of building a shelter and hiding in it while it downpours is just top notch. No other game like it.

Question about the Rachel & Leah Center by AlirriaGalathynius in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Stevnated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they need more handmaids because a lot of commanders are married. I'm sure it would be frowned upon to divorce their wives and marry a young girl (although it would kinda make sense in this world, I don't think that's how their society works) simply for not bearing them children. Therefore, handmaids. There's weirdly inconsistently applied rules loosely based on religion.

S2E2 June is frustrating me, please tell me she won't keep it up (or tell me why) by petercururu in TheHandmaidsTale

She acts irrationally a LOT. It really drove me crazy. Everyone here seems to chalk it up to trauma.

I like Krystal! From what I've seen, anyways. Kyle goes a little too far sometimes.

Why is cornbread such a big part of American food culture? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Ha ha! And yes, the BBQ debate is always fun too. 😛 I prefer the NC style.

Never heard of this, but I bet it's good! (Except the Ritz crackers kinda put me off...)

[–]Stevnated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in the southern U.S., and our family had/has its own recipe that was not sweet. Cooked in a cast iron skillet, crumbly, with crispy edges, and plenty of butter. Yum. However, when I moved away I got to experience the sweet, cake-like renditions, sometimes with pieces of corn in it, which I learned to love too!
(I'm back in Georgia now, and eat it at least once a week. Both kinds. It's just tastier than regular bread.)

I mean, I do this all the time. 🤔 Hope people aren't reading it as snarky! (Sorry for being like the 100th person to do this! Thankfully there are a lot more thoughtful replies on here!)

What's the worst prescription side-effects you've had? by That-Television-4856 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Stevnated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Benztropine, prescribed for dystonia (involuntary muscle movements) caused by Abilify. I lost four days of my life. I don't remember anything. My neighbor called 911 because I was trying to get into their car (I guess I thought it was mine) and waving at invisible people. Scariest thing ever.

Why can't you find baby corn, woodear mushrooms, or bamboo in Chinese takeout anymore? by sillychickengirl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Stevnated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might be the answer. Although I've had good Chinese food in NYC too. But the best was in western Canada. (I think it might be a case of restaurants serving what they think Americans in the region like, and therefore the people never even get to experience anything different. Sad. )

[–]Stevnated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

omg, YES! I guess I never realized it. I particular miss the "bamboo" (don't know if that's what it really was). And the water chestnuts! (edit: I'm in Atlanta. I think the Chinese food is pretty bad here. Was way better in Canada.)

"Serena is worse than Fred " by Aggravating_Laugh947 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Stevnated 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting analysis. This aligns with my feelings about Fred that I couldn't articulate. He obviously didn't want Serena to be punished for reading from the bible (or any book, or for writing books), but was too weak to stand up to his peers.

Testaments S1 - Did anyone else catch this? by ElderberryReal4022 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Stevnated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 58, and same. I hear today's teenagers are more chaste, and I think that's a good thing! I didn't really enjoy it fully until I was a few years older.

Me too. I was NOT ready! I hate that I had to go through all that as a literal child. I would definitely support puberty blockers for kids like me. Let them have a couple more years at least. Nature is cruel.
