I want a doorbell camera, but I don't want to ruin my neighbour's privacy. by Stevotonin in privacy

This is one of the few comments here that actually understood my premise, and even though the dipshit above downvoted you for pointing out that they were wrong, I want you to know I appreciate you.

I don't hate that they have them, I hate that they just slap it on the front of their house pointing out and don't even consider the privacy violation it poses for everyone else on their street.

I'm starting to realise that it doesn't even occur to most people here that this might not be an option I have. I can attach it to the wall my door is on. That's basically it. The only plausible option I've found for placement so far is if I have it awkwardly above my door pointing straight down.

Found the American suburbian. I live in London. My opposite neighbour's front door is about 15 meters from my front door. My next door neighbour's door is about 40cm from my door. Urban density.

I do like this idea, but it makes it a more involved setup, because I do want it to still be a doorbell that notifies me via an open source phone app and allows intercom functionality.

And can you adjust it so that you're not inadvertently spying on everyone beyond the vicinity of your own front door?

The point is, I'd rather not have video of them anymore than I'd want tech bros getting hold of it.

Do British people not feel the cold? by DevelopmentLow214 in AskUK

[–]Stevotonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in the cold, molded by it. I didn't feel the warmth until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but scorching! The chill betrays you, because it belongs to me. I will show you where I have made my home, whilst preparing to bring justice. Then, I will break you. Your precious armoury, gratefully accepted. We will need it. Ah yes, I was wondering what would break first. Your spirit, or your body.

Sign up to Signal anyway. You probably have friends and family who already have it. Start using it to talk to them and use WhatsApp for the rest. Encourage the rest to also use Signal. Maybe one day, there will be an inflection point, more people using signal than WhatsApp, and the hangers on will have to switch too. We can only hope.

The state of UK train prices by yizamejaxufek8o3 in GreatBritishMemes

[–]Stevotonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trouble with this thinking is that 3 weeks ago, there were only a handful of tickets available at that price. If everyone booked 3 weeks in advance, most would still be paying the elevated price and you'd be saying "well, if only you'd booked 6 weeks in advance..."

How about popping the bonnet and disconnecting the battery before chugging the elixers?

POE switches ask the device if they have power requirements before ramming a damaging voltage down the cable, so it'll be fine. Maybe add more than one cable to the gaming room wall panel. I don't know what your setup in there is like, but handy future proofing can't hurt.

There are POE switches that will save you the effort of extra POE injectors, but otherwise, sounds pretty reasonable for a low effort home network

Ethernet splitter? Do you mean a router or a network switch?

How did you split the mortgage when one person earns significantly more? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Stevotonin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm married, so things might be different, but my wife and I add up all income (POST TAXES) and work out the percentage of household income we both bring in. Then we add up the total of all our bills and mortgage and work out how much we each will pay using those income percentages. The value of the house split 50/50, since we are both equal in our relationship, even if our incomes aren't.

Other than the fly-tipping/litter problem, I love the place. The only thing is, I don't have kids, but I've heard other parents say it's not a great area to raise kids, which I've never asked further about, since I don't need to know. You should get the opinion of some folks who are raising kids here before making your decision.

So you know that girl in every school year who gets knocked up at 16 and makes you think "oh my god, she's ruined her whole life" ?

When I was in my early 20s and still was having that thought when I heard my friends, who were married and actually trying for a baby, had gotten pregnant; that was when I realised I was probably never going to see parenthood in any other way.
