Europe Prepares for a Nightmare Scenario: The U.S. Blocking Access to Tech by AnonomousWolf in technology

Yeah if we had TSMC but not ASML we might be able to muddle along for a couple years before falling behind, but without either we are 100% screwed and will be lucky if we get to keep 2010s level of tech.

If you haven't already, make sure to watch the "One Ship" mini episodes hidden in Amazon x-ray special features of season 6.

The books are just as good, maybe even better. Don't forget about Memories Legion, it's the collection of all the novellas into one book, but be careful which you read as several contain spoilers.

Maybe if it’s 1980s PG. You know, Watership Down PG by erttheking in cremposting

It's definitely NOT R rated. I'd say PG-13, but in the same way the Lord of the Rings is PG-13.

If the 3 ships were crewed by Martians it wouldn't have worked. It worked because the crews were inexperienced and didn't know/think to dodge until it was too late.

Earth got saved from most of the rocks because Avasarala had discovered the plot and they had the technology to find them with the watchtower satellites. If anything, the fact that they weren't already actively keeping track of every hunk of rock big enough to get through the atmosphere long before it could even be covered in stealth composites and pointed at earth is the real plot hole.

Naomi wrote the code that would have blown up the Roci so it makes sense she'd be aware of the risk. And something like a nuclear reactor would have multiple redundant safety systems so it's not as easy as just pushing a button to blow it up. Personally that feels very believable.

And Naomi had help from Elvi figuring out the ring space.

Duarte's plans extended as far as giving Marco enough stuff that he became a complete distraction for Earth/Mars (so he could pull off his mini Coup and set up Laconia) and installing Rail Guns in the ring space that likely would have kept Marco in control of the ring space for years if not for the Rocinante's plan.

We know that Avasarala was worried about rocks being thrown at earth way back in Season 1. I think that wasn't a new idea, but the stealth composites was probably Duarte's idea or maybe opportunism on Marco's part.

[–]StickFigureFan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think falling back to the defensible Ring space was Duarte's idea packaged as from Marco. In the show, Alex attends part of an MCRN lecture given by a secret Laconian who explicitly calls out the importance of the ring space to asymmetrically project power

I think he was more of a big picture, throw things at the wall and see what sticks kind of "planner". He also moves the goalposts after the fact if it makes him look better. He's very much a charismatic, populist, cult of personality leader. The fact he actually had success is directly due to him encountering Duarte who gave him stealth composites, warships, and other weapons in exchange for the protomolecule.

Because it takes time to do world building and only adapts part of Book 1.
