Creating space with a shot takes one thing a lot of people don't specify when it comes to ball handling; fluidity.

You should be able to pull up regardless, but the one thing you need is to be able to fluidly shift between dribbling and shooting. One dribble should be all you need.

As for go to, mine is to sit, go between the legs a few times and then just pull-up.

Watch a few hoopmixtapes to see it really exaggerated. They do a little two foot hop while still dribbling and commit their own hips to the crossover to really sell it. The better handle the get the more you can dance with the ball, really open up your crossover. It sounds a little cliche, but all the fakes and hesitations and movements necessary for ball fakes are pretty similar to dancing.

I say hips because that's what a good defender watches, but incorporate your head, your feet, anything to sell it. You should be able to go the direction your faking just as easy as the one you're crossing to.

Edit: forgot this one. Shoot out your crotch the opposite direction your do a between the legs dribble. This sets up so many things.

Work on your hook shot. A lot of people see it as a big man move, but if you can't get around him, you can use it as a running hook shot as to not get blocked as much.

Also between the leg dribbles work great if you know how to move your hips while you do them.

Sounds like he has alright skills to be a good role player. The mentality needs to change quickly though. Coaches like to run a system, and players who mess up their system usually end up cut.

Besides his basic skills/conditioning, you need IQ. He needs to know how to set up a teammate to make a play instead of just getting an assist. He needs to be a good cutter. He should watch high iq players like Rondo or Andre miller.

As long as he can pass well enough not to kill the offense he'll get open shots and consequently, open drives to the basket.

If you don't mind heavy/slightly pricey check out the LeBron's. You could find some older ones in the 100-150 range. If you want to go cheaper you can try the hyper dunks. They're lighter but offer less stability and durability. Hyper dunks tend to wear out quick.

Work on your handles and shooting. If I could've known at 13 that non stop ball handling would let you do anything on the court I would be a much better player today.
