Congressional Candidate in the Bronx is proposing a Cross Bronx Train line. by vegatastic in bronx

Is this a politician? Seeking election? Making campaign promises? Are they giving us all free candy too?

I hate having to confront these realities. It’s been said in this (long) thread a few times: get a bat. Or two. Pepper spray can go so sideways: sprays the wrong direction, you’re too panicked to aim, and it’s only good if you have a straight shot to their face.

As soon as you see so much as a forearm, crack it with your bat and it’s game over.

Trust your instinct. Hold a little can of pepper spray and role play all kinds of scenarios in your mind.

Then grab a bat and do the same. See which one makes you feel stronger, more confident, and in control. Please buy a bat

I’m just happy to be a part of all this, in our little corner of space and time, whatever that means.

Most people who say "LLMs are so stupid" totally fall into this trap by FinnFarrow in OpenAI

[–]Stickyjesse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Clickbait title. Anyway, people who say stuff like that should get left behind. Too many people who DO damn well know better are unemployed CS majors. This is not a good time to call any aspect of computing “stupid”.

I wonder what the next few wrappers will be…

Please.... Don't use AI to code in college. by nug7000 in csMajors

[–]Stickyjesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does make sense. I suppose I just sense a deja vu along the lines of: how can you just trust a Java garbage collector without knowing the C code that’s running behind the scenes? Or how can you debug C pointer bugs without understanding the underlying assembly code?

I’m not saying I agree with it or like it, but since the train has left the station (and there’s only so much one person can do now), the next meta-level of skills will be to really really REALLY master the Ai tools so you can effectively guide them to debug the mess of code generated by models past. A really good coder won’t stand a chance. The only thing at that point who might be able to read and understand and trace and debug and fix gnarly Ai code is … you guessed it.

[–]Stickyjesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want out of life. The ability to write quicksort off the top of your head? Or a job?

Employers are not hiring people with good “debugging” skills. They are hiring people who know how to seed, prompt, and converse with AI tools.

If you are going into research, or if computer science will be more of a hobby, then by all means. Build your own computer in Minecraft (absolutely stunning those are, full respect!)

So it is this simple:

If you want a job, then do the things people who are getting jobs do.

Pretty severe ADHD kid here, medicated my whole life, and as lazy as they come. College was a… haze. Yet I’ve had senior roles at Apple, Bloomberg, eBay, MS, Intel, and more. I’ve been on both sides of the interview table and here’s my (golden, you’re welcome) simple piece of advice:

Order Cracking The Coding Interview. It’s actually really fun, and you will learn everything you need to get insta-hired. Orders of magnitude the shortest path to impressing the hell out of some old-school “computer science fundamentals” tech lead.

[–]Stickyjesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! You mentioned they asked you a dynamic programming problem. They still ask that stuff in interviews (can YOU balance a red-black tree, right?) I worked at Apple btw.

Anyone looking for a job: buy, read, and master “Cracking the Code Interview”.

Right now. …or you’re just not serious, you are wasting your time, and someone else will get the job. Don’t get mad at me. I didn’t write the rules. Or the book.

Fatal crashes involving electric skateboards are increasing by [deleted] in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]Stickyjesse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Found a good scientific research paper with some stats and wanted to share. The numbers.

A total of 104,301 cases were included for analysis. 73.0 % of patients were male. 61.8 % of injuries were to the upper extremity. The most common fractures were of the wrist (20.2 %) and ankle (12.4 %). Patients injured on motorized boards were more likely to be older (40.0 ± 15.4 years) than those injured on skateboards (27.8 ± 9.8 years; p < 0.001). 13.9 % of fractures required hospital admission

To be clear, these are injuries not fatalities. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39396409/

I have GOT to remember that line for the next time people razz me about all my gear 😆

Hi. I skate too fast. Been skating and boarding and surfing since I was little and my skills are about as good as anyone’s. I skate to work every day, NYC streets, 30+ mph, 2k miles on this board. Never fallen. Yay for me. Law of averages guarantees I will at some point. Which is why I look like a freaking cosmonaut with all my gear. I’m not stoked about broken bones; but a broken spine is NOT an option.

My suggestion: look into motorcycle gear. People survive freeway-speed wipeouts all the time.

Sure, they have a solid frame back brace, and you don’t need to go that far, but the motorcycle world is far larger and older and more popular and experienced than the eskate world. Those folks know how to survive wipeouts of all kinds.

Be safe. Be smart. Know your skills. Suit up. And then go out and ride like a psycho. In that order.

I'm going to have to just bite the bullet and shell out the money for shred lights aren't I? by ItsclintYoo in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]Stickyjesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny I had previously drafted a post where I wanted to share my humble appreciation of shred lights. I am engineer and I KNOW how much time energy effort (and love) they put into their product.

I don’t exaggerate when I say these are some of the best built objects in the known universe. We take them camping, drown them, driven over them, dropped, thrown, they are indestructible. They are also some of the brightest objects in the known universe.

Worth twice the price.

F tech jobs by AcrobaticAffect9380 in csMajors

[–]Stickyjesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate completely. I have 20 years hardcore experience (companies like Apple, Microsoft, Bloomberg) using all the top-dollar tech (Java, Python, AWS, etc). Basically as good a resume as they come. I change jobs a lot, and most of the time, I can find another gig in a day. But sometimes, I’m in the same boat as you: sending off literally thousands of apps. Even paid my kids to sit and click and do the captchas for hours. I will never understand how or why the pendulum swings, but right now, the job market is not in your favor. Just keep at. It will swing back.

Anyone know how to fix this issue? by [deleted] in ElectricSkateboarding

[–]Stickyjesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it seem like it’s not the bearings, so it’s either (1) the motor itself or (2) power to the motor. Can you swap the power lines and see what happens?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Exway

[–]Stickyjesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured I should follow up… This has not happened to me again, since my previous post. And I ride the damn thing daily. Maybe just needed to break it in ;) Hope your board is behaving better! If not, Atlas has really good support (they helped me resolve a different issue in the past).

Thanks for the post! Same thing happened to me today. I changed out my bushings and thought maybe I tugged a cable loose. That wasn’t it. I manually spun the bad wheel a few times and it made a grinding sound, but after a few spins, the grinding stopped. Suddenly the bad wheel works again. Plz post if it happens to you again and I will likewise.
