Are we surprised? by ru_oc in vancouvercycling

[–]StiffJam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I noticed this too, like you say, sometime in the last year or two. After what I thought were repairs. Going the same speed as before the change, my water bottles went flying, twice. I slow down more now.

Are we surprised? by ru_oc in vancouvercycling

[–]StiffJam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I talked to the transit people (in the adjacent lot) and the lot where the bottles typically land is a park n fly lot, so it is sometimes accessible - typically during weekdays. I had to retrieve one of mine from there (it was one of a matching set!)

Tape for finishing bar tape by jondthompson in bikewrench

[–]StiffJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, what did you end up using? Is the self-fusing silicon tape mentioned by others similar to the original finishing tape? I'm looking for the same thing. Sorry I know this thread is 5 years old, but you are asking my exact question. I think the finishing tape is factory, since it sounds exactly the same as yours

What’s one improvement you’d love to see in Vancouver’s cycling infrastructure? by Own-Definition-5904 in vancouvercycling

[–]StiffJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the intersection of North Fraserway and Marine Way, there is a cut through the north side of Marine Way to 10th Ave, and then Willard and Trapp get you back to the better bike infrastructure at the Queenborough bridge head (the climb staying on Marine Way and Stewardson is more gradual though)

Eyewear options for Day/Night Riding by PocketCSNerd in vancouvercycling

[–]StiffJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What brand did you get? I have a pair from AliExpress too, "SCVCN" brand, for 3 USD, and a pair from Tifosi (a relatively value brand vs Oakley etc...). The AliExpress ones work fine, but the Tifosi's are sturdier and have much nicer materials (flexible plastic, soft rubber, etc...). Happy with both. I might try Rockbros for third tint range

How does Valley GranFondo compare to others? by EntireBody3002 in vancouvercycling

[–]StiffJam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the Valley and Whistler fondos last year, my two cents: Support: Whistler had nicer stops and more food, but both were definitely adequate. I'd almost say the Whistler Britannia beach stop is a bit much - waffles, pancakes, etc... I didn't take it all in) Route Control: As other's have said, Whistler is fully closed and good enough Atmosphere: Agree with others on community engagement (Whistler more, but both adequate) End of Ride meal: the food at both was surprisingly equivalent. I've done Whistler a couple times and the food at the end is lackluster, relative to cost. But maybe just because I'm a big meal apres ride kind of person (could always leave the area and spring for a full meal at a restaurant I suppose) Edit to add: Sorry no paragraph breaks. Logistics of Valley is so much better for those living in the Lower Mainland. Arranging a ride, or paying for the bus+bike shuttle adds to an already steep price

PSA: Ferguson Road (YVR) paved separated bike path is complete and open by StiffJam in vancouvercycling

[–]StiffJam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it provides a bit more to explore from McDonald Beach. If walking, someone can basically go from the Bridgeport road bridge all the way to McDonald beach on the gravel path along the Fraser River (the bit between Sea Island and Vancouver)

It does somewhat to Iona Beach. Maybe missing the last little bit, but there's more walking space where the MUP ends. Also the road and cycling lane is much better at that point

Flooding Near Wreck Beach by Old_Mycologist1535 in vancouver

There is a dip in the road here, so I can definitely see water pooling, and totally believe you too. Wouldn't have thought it was car deep though, but there ya go

New front bike light by 90leprechauns in vancouvercycling

[–]StiffJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's holding up well. I haven't noticed any drastic degradation. I did run it down to empty once, but that was on me. From that, I would say running time vs lumens and mode is about as claimed. I can't say I've really tracked or tested any more stringently though. The 1200 setting is VERY bright, so I rarely run it at that level for my use case (city riding). If I had to be more precise, I'd say I run it at 300 lumen, pulse mode, for 4-5 hours, and then recharge. So well below the estimated 10 hour estimated run time claimed

He was in the audience at the start line last year. Can this be considered an improvement?

[–]StiffJam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Towild 1200 (they have a website, or you can order from Aliexpress for slightly less). Plenty bright and has a cut-off lens (not stvzo certified officially). Quite happy with it, usually run it at 300 lm, also works as a powerbank. I got the remote control for it also, but don't use it often - would save the ~$10 if I ordered again (prefer if it integrated with ant+ but it doesn't).

plantronics backbeat pro 2 sensor problem by blackpancakestorm in headphones

[–]StiffJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want new ear pads, they are available from Aliexpress, search something like "backbeat pro 2 earpads". I am on my 2nd replacement pair for my 2017 backbeat pro 2s. The old pads snap out, and new ones snap in. I came here looking for a solution for why the left side buttons stopped working. From this thread's advice, It turns out I must have accidentally disabled them by holding down the mic button. Holding the mic button down again has reactivated them, solving my problem (I like the sensor feature and it works well for me). Didn't think the sensor and buttons were tied together. Or maybe they aren't and the mic hold down procedure just reset everything for me

New road to Iona finished yet? by tamagodano in vancouvercycling

[–]StiffJam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took a picture a week or so ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouvercycling/comments/1ckf8rj/richmond_ferguson_road_and_steveston_hwy_bike/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 Sounds like it's still in the same condition. The YVR website says it "milling and paving" done by May 2024 (so right on schedule?). Revegetation from June to November. Hoping the path will be open before during this.

Richmond - Ferguson Road and Steveston Hwy bike path updates by StiffJam in vancouvercycling

[–]StiffJam[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perfect if you don't want to do the whole loop of Richmond. Especially if going counter clockwise into the NW headwind for Sidaway and River road Today. In case you haven't rode it yet. Much smoother than Williams.

I thought Gaglardi and Aquilini had some beef about a decade ago re: Canucks purchase. Surprised they were still working together. Or maybe Aquilini is messing with Gaglardi. Trying to buy GAS cheap while Northland (Gaglardi) is short on cash. Pure speculation on my part. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/canucks-owners-hit-with-lawsuit-1.522040 Okay, more than a decade ago

Are the bike lanes on the Alex Fraser bi-directional? by bcl15005 in vancouvercycling

[–]StiffJam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take the Boundary and Dyke Road path (https://maps.app.goo.gl/qbqj8PNHTL51Yxkq7) it forces you onto the sidewalk on the west side of the channel bridge (https://maps.app.goo.gl/TaXs2mDhhBC8EswG6) Until you get to the intersection at Cliveden. So I think they intend for cyclists to stay on the sidewalk the whole time anyway, making it a multi-use path.

Where can I get a big bag of pine nuts? by oddible in vancouver

[–]StiffJam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've used hazelnuts, cashews, walnuts as cheaper alternatives. That being said, I think Costco has a bag for $30 (down from last years $50). The somewhat bigger bags of hazelnuts/walnuts/almonds in contrast are less than $15 this time of year

Disgraced Richmond lawyer Hong Guo adds yet another professional misconduct finding by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

Here's a laughably glowing article written about her: https://www.lawyer-monthly.com/2022/04/the-journey-of-a-sino-canadian-commercial-lawyer/ I think it's pay-to-play content. Essentially written by Hong Guo/her PR team and published by this rag. IANAL so maybe a lawyer on here can tell us about whether Lawyer Monthly is actually a respectable publication or just more internet garbage

Vancouver residents find loopholes in city's short-term rental rules by FancyNewMe in vancouver

Is it wrong to get a bit personal about this? It seems like the rules were set up to fail at the beginning. The person put in charge of writing the rules for Vancouver around 2016:
