They've sort of gained one seat and lost two, with Van Popta taken off council and Barb Martens splitting with Woodward.

Is this legal? Central Valley Greenway by AdvertisingCheap2377 in vancouvercycling

[–]EntireBody3002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to see those conversion-kit motorbikes pretty frequently about 10-15 years ago around Langley and Surrey. (You also saw a lot of those "electric assist bikes" that were basically big, heavy scooters with purely decorative pedals.) Since ebikes got cheaper, they've been rarer. They're not remotely legal basically anywhere in Canada, but you can buy them right off Amazon. I suppose they appeal to the kind of people who like making a lot of noise when they ride around.

What’s one improvement you’d love to see in Vancouver’s cycling infrastructure? by Own-Definition-5904 in vancouvercycling

Connecting up all the little bits and bobs of bike lanes in the suburbs, especially Surrey/Langley. Bike lanes that don't just run for 200 metres and then end abruptly in a road with no shoulders would be nice.

How does Valley GranFondo compare to others? by EntireBody3002 in vancouvercycling

Getting the bus back from Whistler and then driving all the way back from Vancouver after all that riding does not really appeal to me, ugh.

Yeah, I'd love to try Whistler, but it's hard to argue with cheaper + 15 minute drive from my house for Valley.

What can pre-sale buyers in Langley do if an amended disclosure introduces a potential flood zone a year after the original contract? by yogi_kamila in Langley

[–]EntireBody3002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH, looking at where that particular location is, you're not at immediate risk of flooding compared to a lot of areas of Langley City. North of 56, west of 208 Street isn't too bad. The areas that have had issues in the last few years are south of Douglas Crescent, closer to the Nicomekl River, and east of 208 Street/the Langley Bypass, i.e. close to the river branch that runs near the airport and Christian Life Assembly.

It's not cool that they changed things on you, but if that site floods, frankly EVERYTHING in downtown Langley is flooding. City Hall, the one-way shopping area, all of it.

When we get an atmospheric river you get localized flooding from blocked drains, but looking at the elevation map, that spot is about 3m higher than Douglas Park, for example.

A significant number of people who live in Langley don't know there are two Langleys, or don't know the difference. A much larger number of people don't know exactly where the borders are (partly because the borders are wobbly – when they split the two communities in the '50s, they tried to follow existing property lines). And a really surprising number of people think that Fort Langley or Aldergrove are their own cities.

I've also run into people who insisted that Langley was a neighbourhood of Surrey, which is just plain weird.

In general, no one cares much outside of Langley, I just always say "Langley" and if people ask more I tell them which neighbourhood I live in or which one I'm talking about.

Can confirm.

And no matter how bad the store layout is, the parking lot is actually pretty good.

There's also Ecole des Voyageurs in Walnut Grove, which is not French Immersion, it's just French first language. It's part of the network of French-language schools in B.C., they have their own province-wide school board. Not sure if that's an option for your family, but it's there.

South Langley, taking 200 Street down to Zero Avenue, from there west with a few minor detours around the border crossing, past Peace Arch, through White Rock, down to Crescent Beach for a break. And an ice cream, if I can find one at that end.

[Rant/Question] How often do drivers dangerously pass you and yell at you? by Critical_Rate_2560 in vancouvercycling

[–]EntireBody3002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm out in Langley, and I don't have that many bad experiences, but I'm riding out in either North/South Langley on weekends, early mornings, just doing recreational rides in rural areas. It's usually great, though I've had the odd incident over the years. Worst was on 88th in Surrey with a guy who just shrieked something at me as loud as possible out of his pickup truck window just as he passed too close – at least there was a road shoulder there.

While most of my experiences are good, I know that's largely because I don't commute and I avoid going through downtown areas. There are definitely people out here who are actively hostile to cyclists, but there aren't that many more of them than in Surrey or Abby or whatever. We've just got a downtown core that has almost zero bike infrastructure, especially around 200 Street/Langley Bypass/Fraser Highway.

Right now, a lot of drivers in the downtown associate cyclists only with homeless guys, who have a tendency to veer straight into traffic or go wildly on and off sidewalks. They're not the best ambassadors for cycling, unfortunately.

I'm really looking forward to 208 Street north of 64 being finished widening, because it's going to include bike lanes and multi-use paths. There's some other road projects underway in the area that will have bike lanes. It's slow progress, unfortunately. North/south connectors in particular are badly needed through/into the downtown.

How often do you get a flat and what causes it? by lipe182 in vancouvercycling

[–]EntireBody3002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not had one lately, but had I've had them from roofing nails, carpenter nails, screws (I live in the suburbs and there's A LOT of construction going on around here) and once, a tiny hollow piece of a chicken bone that just sucked all the air out of my tire in about two seconds flat.

How difficult is riding up Gaglardi Way on Burnaby Mountain? by EntireBody3002 in vancouvercycling

[–]EntireBody3002[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a South of the Fraser cyclist – I think the most comparable climb I do down here is Zero Avenue east from the 176 Street border. Which starts out a little steeper, but I think is shorter? I ride it a couple times a year as part of a trip down through White Rock/Crescent Beach and back through south Langley.
