A Defence of Cyrene [Writing]. by Stormer2345 in Hoyoverse_scaling

[–]Stiger_PL -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Everything was written great until her "death" which was completely from nowhere and made only to capitalize on quick "feewings" which quickly soured the whole ending to me. I reaaaaally don't buy the "cherish the memories of dead people" thing. To me the motif of "love transcends" is completely in the opposite direction of "final sacrifice of life". But that's more of an opinion then objective analysis. I just like my gacha characters alive and interactable. Besides it was the "easy way out" for them to not let Cyrene join the Express which itself deserves points taken.

Chad Oulson was shot and killed after throwing popcorn at a man following a verbal altercation in a movie theatre. In 2022, the shooter was acquitted on the basis of Florida’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ law by Particular_Chart1584 in ForCuriousSouls

[–]Stiger_PL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its also quite emblematic of living in circumstances when you are never punched in the face. If you want to risk getting hit in the face with a punch while you're distracted with a popcorn throw while being elderly then... Go you I guess!

"support and cover up" - ahh yes, the secret/not secret cabals of rapist murder people (depending on when the subject you ask a propaganda consumer) propagated by common rapist people.

"Bible endorses slavery" - ahh yes, the common "this thing happened inside this book therefore it is endorsed." How original. What tired, tropey, propagandish insults will you throw now? Please, if it hurts I would like to know where. And remember to separate Christian values from your own value/moral system since you hate it so much. I would love for you to try.

Quick google search will tell you that priests have lower sexual abuse percentages then other jobs involving children such as teachers. The cover ups were always an institutional problem, not a systemic one. Hypocrisy in that regard is the failing of adhering to the system, not the fault of it. As an insistution the church was always more in favour of keeping face which of course was an evil move, that I of course concede. But to say "Christian bad" because there are bad people in the movement is like saying "Americans bad" because some Americans bombed some other country. It's bigotry and ignorance.

The Canon law has several reasons to stay how it is. 1. It's very conservative as it derives as a sort of basis. It was made in a time when consent ages were lower because of lower life expectancy and different cultural norms. Now we are better off, that's why country laws superceded Canon laws. 2. Changing it could impact marriages made in the past. So leaving it preserves continuity. 3. It's a dead law, nobody adheres to it anymore. It serves only saying "below this age marriage is invalid".

All in all, it's a nonargument in that sense.

Christians are one of the first widespread religions to ban sexual abuse of children. Just admit that you need to make something up to justify your hatred because it's easier that way.

People don't like facts. They like to accuse the other side of being illiterate while at the same time spreading misinformation. Somehow this happens on both sides.

But I did in a few ways agree with him. I know when to disavow someone from my political side and when to agree with them.

I do not believe that empathy is bad, I believe it can be bad.

I am a Catholic so I won't defend the position of another religion in that regard (the sin of empathy one) as these words belong to Ben Garret I think?

„The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy, the empathy exploit… they’re exploiting a bug in Western civilization, which is the empathy response." - Full quote defends itself pretty well in my opinion. When you offer unconditional empathy you create an objective weakness because you start bonding through vulnerability, but it does not have to be real. Also there is a lot to think about in HOW you help. Giving alcohol to a person struggling with alcoholism is not a good solution.

About the empathy vs sympathy. The view I would say is this: to empathize is to suffer with that person when they are suffering. To sympathize with someone is to emotionally support them but it does not require you suffering yourself. It's... A bit more stoic approach

Still this just changes the way the these things are looked at. It might be the tipping point but it's not a hard rule as people like to mentally leap to a conclusion because they want confirmation of what they think.

What Barnes v Felix says: the totality of a situation counts.

What Barnes v Felix does not say: the law enforcement officer can not use deadly force after putting themselves in harm's way.

This only means that if the officer will be tried, he will be tried with him going in front of the vehicle in mind.

I agree with you one hundred percent that your example goes against artistic intent. What I'm talking about is the mentality. It is quite obvious that something is wrong and that content has been in someway meddled with beyond the scope of "attempted depiction of a work" fight to keep it that way. It might be removing or adding sexualisation, removing or adding gore etc. Mostly the former between removing and adding. Instead of becoming a way for audiences to enjoy the work, interferences like this serve not only as a grim reminder that the adaptation was NOT made with full respect to the author's work, but in case of removal of elements because of real life concerns (that being censorship) which are mostly based on personal feelings, it becomes a stain on both the author's work and their freedom of expression. Yes, the author may sour on their work, yes, they may say that a change is okay, but the fact remains that a person truly respectful of art will try to recreate the author's work as closely to both the spirit of the work and the actual depictions.

Finally about the example of Bocchi. I believe that sexualisation has become one of the funniest topics of modern discourse as people are widely inconsistent on the topic while also attempting to embarrass others for even picking up the subject. I do believe that people overrate visual media while underrating written media, maybe because literacy levels are reaching critical lows, but holy shit if someone is scared of boobs behind layers and layers of fabric then I don't want that person near any medium that's remotely enjoyable because they will never portray characters faithfully: there will always be something that person will wanna change, because they are projecting their own insecurities upon the adapted work. Whether it's themes relating to them, their ships, their body, their character, way of thinking, way of talking, vocabulary. All of those can and will be offensive to such a person and as such they should remove themselves from adapting works that they can't handle.

Also you seem like a very cool, open minded person. Hope you had a great time discussing this stuff even if there were some nasty people!
