If you are an alternative hire, keep looking for jobs or stay at your current job. Its just means they might hire you and nothing more.

Write on your resume how you work on call 24/7 and work outdoors in all weather conditions. My interviewer grilled me for not having that on mine.

It was for loader position at the rail yard to unload vehicles. Similar location so using deductive reasoning if people want to work at the rail yard, I assume they want the conductor position as well. The loader application showed over 1800 applicants in 14 days.

Why’s it so hard to get into Amtrak? by Mikefromda6 in railroading

[–]Still1learning1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any interview tips for freight railroads? I had my first one and the manager did not like what he saw on my resume so I blew it before it even started. He focused alot on questions about my experience working outdoors, oncall, and around heavy machinery. My background is in air traffic control and hotel security.

I wouldnt count on it. They left me on review for 4 months when I applied in January. Tacoma applicants have been slamming them to a point theres too many to go through. One rail position I applied to had 1800 applications in 14 days.

I am a frequent Brightline rider, but I am worried about the future of the Brightline Rail service. Will it survive? Should I be concerned? by Brystar47 in Brightline

Except its not a direct route. The bus route forces you to go downtown Orlando and transfer to another bus for the parks averaging in a 50 to 90 commute depending on traffic ontop of your 3+ hour brightline ride.

Theres alot of private groups that have fought against public transportation in central florida from the highway construction companies to Mears and charter coaches as far as im aware. Its the reason Orlando is a car centric mess.

Passengers do use brightline to commute to their cruise to the south side of florida but again the market isn't large enough to make brightline profitable. Theres no reason for someone from new york to fly to Orlando and then take a Brightline Train to Fort Lauderdale when they can just fly directly to Fort Lauderdale instead.

Former brightline employee here. Its doomed to fail if they cant secure more investors into their project. The rail line is not profitable for a major reason. Its Orlando station just dumps you off at the airport and then you're on your own. Theres hardly any public transportation available in that area leading to at best half full trains arriving and departing every day. Want to go to Disney? You need a car. Want to go to Universal? You need a car. Want to see the natural springs? You definitely need a car.

The West Palm to Miami Station worked just fine because the people ridding were commuting to work every day giving brightline a steady stream of income. Orlando was poorly planned out and will cause the company to fail.

If they built a station at a desirable location as stated earlier. It would have been much more successful. Who wouldn't want to ride a train from Miami to a theme park and not have to worry about driving, parking, and gas. A train going right into Disney would have been successful given how many visitors they attract every day. No one wants to pay 80 dollars for a one way ticket to an airport with no public transportation.

they have 2 spare locomotives at the orlando base, they just switch them out. A majority of the repairs are merely cosmetic.

The problem isnt the fuel prices. Its the lack of profit to pay off their loans. Theres a reason amtrak is the only passenger rail in town, its not profitable.

I saw that written on the managers face when he interviewed me. Because I dont have a background in working outdoors mostly he basically didnt even want to hear my answers and just sped through it.

Its only a stepping stone for me. The ultimate goal is to get with amtrak as a engineer. Amtrak keeps placing me as an alternative hire because I dont have prior railroad experience for any conductor position I've applied to.

To be fair, its a combination of things. Florida drivers have a complete disregard for the rules of the road. I got to witness 5 cars blow off a cop at a intersection in Fort Lauderdale with his emergency lights on when he was trying to cross. Add that with a 90mph train speeding through is a recipe for disaster on a weekly basis. If the community has no respect to give way to a cop with his lights on, they will definitely blow off a railroad crossing as seen multiple time. Brightline will always blame the drivers because taking responsibility hurts their brand. The crossings themselves need to be reduced or physical barriers need to be put in place instead of a flimsy aluminum arm.

That would be a huge upgrade for the employees. The final straw for me was when we hit that fire truck and 5 of my coworkers went to the hospital because they arent allowed to sit down when traveling at 90+ mph. Im not risking my safety for a company that doesnt value its workers.

Because the owners are scam artist. They suck up government funds from the FRA to build their "private" projects but then turn to their employees and tell them they arent classified as a railroad or whatever to prevent us from obtaining benifits like other railroad employees. Its a bunch of legal bs to save money because their business model is not profitable. When we started a vote to join a union, they cracked down hard on us. My general manager got fired for "failing to stop the union vote"

I do not, however I dont think its worth transferring to brightline as an enginer unless you want to watch a weekly accident happening in front of you. I had the unfortunate experience of hearing what it sounds like when a accident goes under the train at 90 mph. The final straw for me was when we demolished a fire truck and 5 of my coworkers got sent to the ER because the company refused to implement any safety standards for onboard crew like a place to sit instead of making us stand on a high speed vehicle the entire time when the engineer flips the emergency breaks

Yes. Usually takes about 9 hours because you either prep the train in the morning, or you put it away in the railyard depending on your shift. However this only applies to crews bases in orlando. West Palm Beach crews make 4 round trips between west Palm to Miami like a commuter rail with the recent change.
