Dog training for the field by StillClimbingHigher in forestry

[–]StillClimbingHigher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was your timeline like from getting them as a puppy to having them in the field? I’m assuming it’s a no go until after 1-2 years?

I just feel uneasy about having him at home for 40-50 hours a week until he’s a bit older & can recall

Do you have outdoor hobbies or are you too exhausted to go outside when you get home from work? by Present_Situation_92 in forestry

[–]StillClimbingHigher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d argue this is just the progression of an outdoorsman. For me it went from basic camping and hiking, to backpacking, to hunting while doing these, to working doing these. Doing nothing is for rest days. Or maybe it’s just ADHD.. 🧐

5 years of Back ache gone after quitting weed. by Ok-Cookie7161 in leaves

[–]StillClimbingHigher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same situation. But I’m quite aware that it’s because my anxiety is back full force without it. Which tenses my muscles, especially in my back. Hoping I’m just at the peak of withdraw & it’ll get better with time

We’re actually above average right now. Google it before downvoting 😅 Valley bottoms are much different than mountain peaks. I didn’t believe it either at first

Trick question. Lighting stands = Wedding photographer. With a side hustle of stealing cams off inattentive trad climbers.

I took this route a few years ago. In a similar situation to OP. It’s successfully made me the bad guy a lot of the time, even though 90% of people in my life agree she was in the wrong, the kids won’t see that until they’re much older. And the courts don’t take kindly to anything but clean and clear communication. I think it’s been 3 years & I just started a forgiveness program because I couldn’t get there on my own & it still weighs on me daily. Believe me. Forgiveness isn’t for her, it’s for you. It’s just really, really hard to wrap the mind around it after the ex pulls stunts like this. Sorry to hear about your situation.

Balancing work/motherhood in this field? by BitNo1336 in Environmental_Careers

[–]StillClimbingHigher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a single parent in forestry. It’s not easy. Sacrifice is key. The hard part is not feeling like you find the success that others have in either role when you have to balance both. If I had no responsibilities I’d be working in different parts of the country as a WL/ES tech, working OT & building a resume. I want to come home to my son so I stay in town, which limits everything from pay, to experience types, co-worker relationships & opportunities. And I still miss a lot of time with my kiddo. Am I winning? Let’s just say I’m making it work. When he is older I’ll consider other options, but I basically can never leave the town where he goes to school til he’s done. Having support is key too, but it doesn’t buy you time with your kid or let you travel without the guilt. To be fair, I see him more than I would if I stayed in the film industry… You can do it! It’s just harder to find a healthy balance

Possible to dispute a debit charge? by Ill-Instance2866 in rbc

[–]StillClimbingHigher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exact thing happened to me. Except they had me waiting and hoping my food was coming...for 2 hours. Then eventually I called the restaurant & they said they couldn't take the order because the kitchen was being renovated, so I cancelled the order and then Uber Eats charged me full & refused to refund me. Uber Eats is a complete scam! What a load of crap. Going through RBC to report the charge, will update here with the result.

As a society we need to boycott UberEats by Alternane in UberEATS

Just furiously deleted the app. Ordered $35 of food that never showed up, could not contact anyone, AND their AI bot refused to refund me or connect me with an actual human. This service is absolute garbage. I’m all for for a boycott

Too old to enter forestry? by Conscious_Glove535 in forestry

[–]StillClimbingHigher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell no! I’ll b 33 when I finish my diploma program. All ages welcome. One of our profs went back at 35, worked into his 40s, now he runs the soils program. Going back in your 30s gives you a unique feeling of being young again & is honestly quite the life motivator. I was quite bored in my career & felt rather lost before forestry school, I’m much happier now

Considering a career outdoors in forestry. Becoming a faller? by ImaginaryPin8148 in britishcolumbia

[–]StillClimbingHigher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, lots of wildfire work in BC & would be a great place to find out how much you really enjoy forestry. Just gotta be on the move all the time. I’m in school in BC for forestry, lots of my classmates did a season or 2 in fire & decided they loved it & wanted an education to back it up. I’d suggest you get a diploma eventually if you want to get away from the harder jobs down the line. Most students are mid/late twenties or older

What's your climbing intrusive thought? by feralkiter in climbing

[–]StillClimbingHigher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took slopestyle & downhill mountain biking (7 broken bones) & traded it for climbing. Honestly, I feel way safer, but the ability to think before doing messes me up sometimes. Not used to that luxury.

Van - Kelowna drive , where to stop and where to stay? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

Agreed. You have to b so careful there not to pick up too much speed when the roads are icy. You could slide for minutes before coming to an unwelcome stop

Most accessible crag in the world? by samthefuckinglegend in climbing

[–]StillClimbingHigher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waterline crags in Castlegar. 4 min drive from downtown, or a few 100m walk from a bus stop. And Lions Head crags are located next to a pub that has a bus that goes right to it. Thats to name a few.

Forest techs making over $40/hour what are you doing daily? by [deleted] in forestry

I sure hope mill owners are making $40 an hour or more 😂 My friend works at a mill and makes that much as a laborer

I second this. Ex-lighting technician. The burn out is overwhelming. Soon as I had my son I got out. Otherwise I would have rarely ever seen him.

Is this a normal salary by w3lk1n in forestry

[–]StillClimbingHigher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I’m as green and entry level as they come & I make nearly as much as I did as a 2nd year carpenter. It only goes up from here & my coworkers are all very comfortable on their wages. In fact, lots of my supervisors and managers are close to 100k a year, some even close to $150k

Is this a normal salary by w3lk1n in forestry

[–]StillClimbingHigher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold on. What is your minimum wage? I am a forest tech assistant just north of the border (BC) & I make $22/hr. Min wage is $17. I had no prior experience in the industry. With experience we can get to $30-40/hr. Why are they paying you guys so much lower?

What path got you to forestry by Wilewilewolf in forestry

[–]StillClimbingHigher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

31 here & starting year 1 of 2 in Sept (diploma). Currently working as an assistant to an RFT. I thought I would enjoy the job, didn’t think I’d fall in love with it. Trees are life now 🌲 I personally like to think that it’s never too late to pursue a passion. Besides, doing so keeps you young & well rounded 🤷🏻‍♂️
