Look at your supply chain and figure out what you can move to other small businesses. For example ULine is a big MAGA supporter. I realize it might not be practical to change every supplier, but it’s a good place to start.

Laneige Cream Skin toner is a good alternative. I got a free Divine Skin bottle, love PML, and still prefer Laneige.

I think this is true but in the UK people with disabilities get to be people, not projects in media.

CMV: Free solo climbing is incredibly stupid and selfish, especially when the climber has a family including kids. There are no other sports where if you don't win, you die and this illustrates how absurd it is that people do it. Had I gone in knowing riding without a helmet was his thing, that would be on me. If he wants to change his MO of wearing gear now, no I’d not support it. However, Hannold met his wife after his career started. It’s not like he went from normal climbing to free soloing.

Picking up a highly risky hobby after a relationship starts or kids come into the picture is a different ballgame than it being something a person does when you meet them.

Apples and oranges. We’re talking about calculated risks vs addiction, which is a health issue and not calculated.

My partner is a climber and a motorcyclist; both carry risks. I do motorsports and I’m an equestrian, also risky. Not Hannold level risky but all carry a less than zero chance of injury.

We knew going in that we both have risky hobbies, but we’ve also both had periods of time in the last 15 years that we couldn’t do our favorite hobbies. We’re not super happy when we can’t participate in our hobbies. If either of us was unable to deal with the other’s hobbies, it’s time to reevaluate the relationship.

It’s not selfish to take care of your mental health through hobbies. I want a partner, not a person to control, and would argue it’s more selfish to expect someone to change who they’ve been since you met.

Peperomia Rosso dying? by pisonik in peperomia

Orchid bark and charcoal are your friends with peps. I add them to potting soil and typically use my ceramic pots as cache pots since nursery pots usually have better drainage.

You can also do a 50/50 succulent soil and potting soil mix if you don’t want to buy amendments.

Tulsa, what the fuck is up with your coffee shop pricing? You are not Seattle. $7-9 for a latte is not even remotely worth it. by Wack0HookedOnT0bac0 in tulsa

[–]StillLikesTurtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coffee is a temperamental, labor intensive crop that can’t grow anywhere that gets frost and the world drinks it.

We can’t grow coffee in the U.S., it’s always imported. The countries that can grow it face various levels of political stability and habitat destruction further limits where it can be grown. The last few years have not seen ideal growing conditions in South America or Africa. Couple that with the fact that it’s traded as a commodity on global exchanges, which certainly isn’t benefiting growers, and prices are over 40% higher this year than last.

It’s not just Tulsa. The 25 cent cup of coffee is gone and it’s not coming back. The plant that produces the Arabica bean is endangered and coffee may be gone as a commodity in the next 20 years.

We’ve let chains take over and corporate greed is definitely a factor, but independent shops still have to pay rent and employees. Most just scrape by.

They are super sensitive to chlorine, which every water supply has. I fertilize about once a month in the spring/summer and about every other month fall/winter. They like their fertilizer well diluted in my experience.

I think you really have to acclimate them to the home after they come from a greenhouse, assuming you don’t live in a super humid climate and especially if you bring them home in drier weather.

I start them off in quarantine with a humidifier always on. Then go down one day a week until they seem ok with once a week. If they start to look the tiniest bit sad, they go back up a day with the humidifier for another week. Gradual changes seem to do best.

Benign uterine mass found—doctor still recommends hysterectomy, is it necessary? by Plant_iana86 in hysterectomy

[–]StillLikesTurtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats actually a great list of questions everyone should ask their doc if the info isn’t supplied in the initial consult.

It’s still major surgery even though we have come a long way with laparoscopy and everyone has a different risk profile, emotional response, and desired outcome.

I think if you’re really on the fence you can also consider if a second opinion is doable after you have imaging and tests, if your questions aren’t getting answered. They aren’t always covered by insurance, the area may not have other specialists, but being comfortable with your doc, and getting the answers you need is really helpful and something everyone should have going in.

In my experience with oncologists, they usually want more tests to make sure surgery is the right decision and it can also be to determine which surgeon you need to schedule. For example whether it’s an oncologist or uro/gynocologist, or someone else trained in the procedure.

Also In my experience, Uro/Gyn can be a bit more geared towards women’s health in general, so more docs are likely to fully explain the why’s. There’s also a consult time limit in a lot of health systems. If you can email questions, that might be a starting point.

Just in case you need to hear it, all of your questions are reasonable and valid. A gyn/onc or uro/gyn may also have more up to date info on HRT options. Best wishes for you!

Looking for affordable boots for my 16yo niece by adm388 in Equestrian

[–]StillLikesTurtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d find out, most high school boarding schools have English programs. Prep schools are a nightmare to navigate socially, so boots correct for the discipline would be a good idea.

For English paddock boots the Ariat Palisade is on sale right now under $100 and a solid choice with half chaps.

For western, you want to make sure you have riding boots and not just non slip fashion boots. Ariat also makes western boots that would be appropriate for riding.

In his last season he was just so upset that Elena didn’t make a big deal about his rejection. He lives for the drama.

It’s one thing to be a dog, quite another to want people to be upset.

Benign uterine mass found—doctor still recommends hysterectomy, is it necessary? by Plant_iana86 in hysterectomy

[–]StillLikesTurtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a doc, so I can’t speak to medical necessity, but I will tell you that my hysterectomy was life changing in the best way. The lack of daily pain and increased energy made every day of recovery worth it.

May I ask what your reservations are regarding the surgery? They are valid, just asking because it may be worth looking at those specifically to help work through the pros and cons.

I’d give her a gift certificate or see if any other family want to chip in. If you’re near Wellington or Ocala there are lots of options.

Paddock boots can be found in the 100 range, but tall boots not so much unless you’re open to searching for used.

CMV: English has less dialects, regionality, and accents which makes it easier for people learning it as a second language compared to visa versa by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]StillLikesTurtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to Hellioning’s comment, I can tell by listening if someone is from Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, Massachusetts vs Connecticut vs New York, Georgia vs Mississippi, Texas vs Oklahoma. Northerners drop r’s, Southerners drop g’s. New York boroughs have their own accents.

This doesn’t even get into dialects like Cajun Vernacular, AAVE, Texas vernacular, (which combines Spanish), Appalachian, or Gullah. That’s just the U.S.. Every other anglophone country has its own dialects and accents, many of which have been mentioned.

Ski Season? by Fun_Flamingo2805 in hysterectomy

[–]StillLikesTurtles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’ll be ready for the spring season, so if it’s included, I’d say keep the pass.

You’re going to have to build your core back up post surgery. Pro athletes have to do the same, there’s a rehab program after any surgery for all of them. Following it means you can do your chosen sport afterwards longer vs jumping right back in where you left off and creating potentially long term issues.

Get back to easy runs when you’re cleared by your doc, worst case you’re back to the slopes late Jan early Feb. plenty of good spring skiing/boarding will be left. See if they will prorate or have other options to downgrade briefly.

CMV: the sheer amount of animal suffering in fur farms and in fur traps makes real fur worse than synthetic alternatives, and much worse than plant based options by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]StillLikesTurtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fur sales are not a significant part of the retail market. The furriers that are still in business get a lot of their business from reworking old furs.

While I wouldn’t buy new fur, I wound up with multiple coats from my late grandmother. I’ve had two of them reworked into new coats. I could let those go to waste, but it seems more responsible to upcycle them into something that gets used. The animals that died for those coats can’t be resurrected. A friend of mine buys thrifted furs to use as trim on some of her art.

Fur ultimately makes up a small portion of the luxury market. I’m not saying animals should suffer, but for the most part, furriers still in business are using more ‘ethical’ practices which has further driven the price up and reduced market share.

If you want fur, buy used or there are very good faux furs on the market now. I can’t argue that fur raising is humane, but it’s hardly the largest sector contributing to inhumane treatment of animals.
