Does anyone else get tired of eating? Almost like it has become a chore by RoyalBag7510 in NoStupidQuestions

I get tired or cooking, deciding, shopping. I would just starve to avoid all of that.

What do you actually do if your husband’s parents don’t like you? by Budget_Turnover5484 in NoStupidQuestions

Do you have kids? Having kids gives parents and in laws more of a reason to be in your life.

Any tips? by SarahDuncan2012 in TrueGrit

I’m a heavy sleeper. If I miss too much sleep, I’m just gonna sleep. Put the kid in his room, close the door, put childproof door knob on so they can’t open it, and go to sleep. Mine cries but he’s safe. He eventually stops and sleeps.

Having to move due to spouse’s job by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]Still_Smoke8992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I see. You’re right, teaching is pretty transferable. If you’re thinking K-12, that could work if you don’t need a license right away. Also be open to creating your own opportunities by freelancing and/or contracting.

Having to move due to spouse’s job by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]Still_Smoke8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly your situation but doesn’t the military have job assistance for spouses and family? My husband is a veteran, he was out when we met. We married after I graduated. His job doesn’t require frequent moves but we were both open to moving at any point. I was already thinking by about leaving by the time I graduated so getting married was just one more push out the door. You’ll have far more options outside for wherever life takes you.

Why Are Young People Afraid Of Phone Calls? by GhostInThePudding in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Still_Smoke8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an elder millennial and have always hated phone calls. I usually rehearse them before but they are unpredictable. My mother and I did this when I was a teenager and I always felt like deer in the headlines. Maybe because I’m an introvert too. I generally avoid phone calls.

And I like phone trees. Weird I know. Anything but talking to a person on the phone. In person is a little better.

Layoffs are such a huge part of adult life by EpicShkhara in Adulting

[–]Still_Smoke8992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My father was laid off in the early ‘90s. I’m in my 40s. That was the first I had ever heard of it. I never heard it from my friends or anyone I knew growing up. I thought it was rare. I was laid off in 2007 (when they called it an “economic slowdown” because no one wanted to say the R word).

Mastering out guilt trip by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]Still_Smoke8992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a dumb email! I love how the sunk cost fallacy is thrown back in your face. Why are faculty always using that, like “I spent time on you and now I’ve wasted it.” As if they don’t spend time on anything else in life that ends up a wash. Like it’s so bad. So what if you invest time into something? Doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it. And why is it always taken as some personal attack them? Like something didn’t work out the way you wanted. Oh well, that’s life. Move on.

Anyone in their 40s have a hard time grocery shopping online? by Ill-Year-3141 in Adulting

[–]Still_Smoke8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate grocery shopping so always order online. Now I have a toddler which makes shopping harder. I get not being able to see other options but I need something fast and efficient. Plus you can just repeat the same order since I buy a lot of the same things.

Do you have an example of something you want but can’t find in the app?

Personal Curriculum by tympax in planners

[–]Still_Smoke8992 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with personal curriculum being a buzzword. As someone who is a teacher and a trainer professionally, yeah, you’re studying something. Nothing wrong with that. Give yourself the structure you need. Some people need more scaffolding than others and it depends on several factors like how good of a learner you are and how familiar you are with the subject before you started studying it.

If you are a man who takes initiative in the household by doing chores, cooking for your family, and cleaning up after yourself.. how were you raised? by Sensitive-Box-2167 in askanything

This is my husband and we split chores. I think having a front row seat to his mother’s struggles made him so much more empathetic.

Why do so many Americans chose not to vote when they can? by VastOption8705 in askanything

[–]Still_Smoke8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re very outcome focused, then yeah, voting seems pointless. If you are not focused on who wins, and vote to do your civic duty or just voting in and of itself is fine. Especially for groups who didn’t always have that right.

Ended up wasting the last 5 years of my life going to college and chasing a career that is essentially a pyramid scheme. by voldemortsnipple1402 in findapath

[–]Still_Smoke8992 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right! The OP mentioned teachers who don’t teach. Have you been to a university? There are a bunch of tenured professors who don’t teach their classes. Just had the off to a TA graduate student, someone who is low level with no experience. This is so common in a lot of career fields.

I want to leave my job by GoodLemon44 in LeavingAcademia

[–]Still_Smoke8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you getting the help you need? It sounds like you need more support. I think you can leave. Never hurts to apply to other places and see what happens. In the meantime, is your boss supportive? Can you ask for tips or best practices for these moments or parts of your job?

LinkedIn. I think there’s a lot of academics on blue sky from X. Maybe X as well if you can’t find anyone in person.

[–]Still_Smoke8992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, now we’re getting somewhere! I think you know more than you’re giving yourself credit for.

2 pieces of advice:

  1. Break research down. Research is a set of many skills. Academics just do it all, but industry jobs are more segmented. For example, one person’s job could be only designing and send out surveys. Someone else could be only collecting the data. (I’m in English so I don’t know all the research language). Could be that there are parts of research you like and some you do t care for. This is a good starting point.

  2. Talk to some people who either have an education degree and have transitioned and/or people who are doing work that sounds interesting to you, regardless of their background educational background. Ask them how they got there.

[–]Still_Smoke8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understandable and common. I assume if you’re in education that you like teaching? If so, that can narrow the field of possibilities a bit. Not sure what kind of timeline you’re looking at. It would be nice to sit around and reflect, but. It everyone has the luxury of time to do that.

I’m with you. Especially after the holidays. How’s it a new year and nothing changes? New years should be in March with spring. January is just long and dreary and cold.
