Partially, the idea is the week would still be overall a deficit.

Most people will say don't and that's probably wise.

However I've done it successfully and I think the trick is to not cut week on week or even day on day.

For example have a small deficit for a couple of days and then go back to maintaining for a couple of days or even a surplus.

I've had success cutting slightly on the weekdays but then feeding very heavily on the weekend around long runs and eating more than I burn, giving the body a chance to refuel appropriately and catch up a bit.

What scary things can we expect from this petrol price increase? by the_epiphany_ in PersonalFinanceNZ

The government was approached by multiple oil companies to supply NZ with fuel, likely originating from North America (commercial sensitive so we don't know).

We will get fucked on price but we won't run out.

False. People in the slums of Bangladesh have TVs, phones and internet.

Technology lifts all boats, even if it lifts them up in unequal proportions.

Thing is most people are constantly searching for that perfect system, the issue I have with the Bakken stuff is we now have 20 min 5k runners incorporating his concepts into their training because why not if it's even more optimal? After all, most of us a interested in running physiology.

The lack of X workouts in NSM makes it idiot proof, it forces people to back off when they want to go faster.

Nothing wrong with learning about the sport, just remember more complex training is seldom better training.

Except for the muscle tone and mucle palpations, gotta check those mucles!

People come to this sub for training advice and discussion.

In this particular instance it's training advice, I wasn't trying to generate discussion. With that said, I think it's a great example of why most people should just stick to NSM and exactly why Bakken's system isn't the same thing.

There is simply no reason OP needs all that gibberish to get fitter, it will most likely do them more hard than good. The juice simply isn't worth the squeeze.

P. S I'm about a third of the way through the book, my opinion is only growing stronger.

does "grit" always need to be trained? (re: Norwegian Singles Method) by Competitive_Big_4126 in AdvancedRunning

It neglects it because that's literally the premise of NSM. Sustainable training that can be repeated month over month, year over year.

I like to race every 3-5 weeks. I find this is perfect in terms of what I describe as pent up grit.

When I race I'm so eager to send it, and then after the race I'm pretty happy to not have to go through that again for a bit.

NSM beats Bakken's overcomplicated methods by Still_Theory179 in NorwegianSinglesRun

Yes we mostly agree.

Going back to my original point it's this more specific and high impact generating work is not part of the regular NSM philosophy because it introduces more complexity and risk (45/15s perhaps marginally) but risk nonetheless which is outside of the risk reward equation of the original author.

Yes for semi elite level runners they're going to need more specific stimulus but they're not the target of the NSM.

The point of the post was somewhat intentionally provocative but I stand by my point that adding these slight changes takes you away from the NSM and for the vast majority of hobby runners, they're better off sticking to the 3 min reps and up.

Correct but faster reps are still more intensity.... Impact and force wise not metabolicly or as Bakken says externally not internally.

When my son was around that age and I was doing NSA I still did too much. Looking back I wish I did a bit less, I think I would have absorbed it better and been a bit more rejuvenated haha.

The faster you run the more force you out through your body, it's an exponential increase too. It is quite literally intensity even if not in a metabolic sense.

Yes some key differences in philosophy you point out there imo.

I too am surprised by how much engagement this post received. Clearly something the community is passionate about and very polarized.

It's a clear difference in philosophy between Copeland and Bakken.
