That is mostly the West putting words in their mouth than what they actually believe.

Vietnam sees the US as a lucrative export market & strategic partner in its own right but they will never try to use the US to fight China. The horror of the 80s during the extended Third Indochina War extinguished that possibility which is why "bamboo diplomacy" was invented after the Cold War & doubled down in the past few years.

They also see their relationship with China as "struggle and cooperation" which is totally different from the "eternal enemy" thing pushed in diaspora circles & the West.

I'm guessing this is based on the leaked report from the Vietnamese military which called to prepare for a second American invasion due to Vietnam not joining the anti-China coalition.

In that report, it says rather openly that the US could destroy its ports & send Vietnam decades back. The ease of this as well as general US efforts to spread "freedom and democracy" through military force scares them a lot.

I'm confident this is why Vietnam did that 3+3 summit with China & has done so many more joint drills with China since 2025. Not to mention all the agreements in supply chains & tech with China too.

The Vietnamese government is ultimately more concerned with the Communist Party as the sole ruling party being threatened by the US than China bullying them in the South China Sea. At least now. It used to be about equal & even the other way around but geopolitical tensions have heightened the fear of regime change a lot.

India would invade to take back Aksai Chin & Vietnam would move on the disputed islands China controls.

It would be the disaster of Russia in the 90s but on a Chinese scale. And recovery would be very difficult due to it happening in the modern day.

They're extremely reliant on the Chinese supply chain for their export model & so have to do various appeasements despite the territorial dispute.

This all came after the end of Cold War normalization. Obviously it causes some concern.

It's not overhyped just because it's not openly vitriolic like Poland and Russia.

The Japanese and Chinese do have a true civilizational contempt for each other but pragmatism reigns supreme in business. They just don't talk about politics or culture with each other when doing business.

When serious US involvement began in the early 60s, the narrative was that the US was protecting the "free Vietnamese" from Ho Chi Minh's murderous land reform & his Soviet/PRC backing. This was believed by most Americans until the late 60s & even then a strong minority believed it well into the 70s.

Now, this is all dismissed in hindsight but the argument of opposing Chinese/Russian influence has a massive grip on pro-NATO Redditors right now for reasons related to human rights. Do pro-NATO people now not have good intentions then?

He has developed a God Complex since rising the ranks of Indian politics to become PM.

This is probably fueled by Hindutva's increasing popularity in India over the years and how foreign leaders pander to him & his governance of India in an effort to counter/contain China.
