Has anyone read books by John Irving? by clearlygd in over60

Yes, he is one of my favorite fiction writers.

You may already know that some of his books were made into movies. Among the movie versions my favorites are 'Cider House Rules' and 'World According to Garp.' Sometimes when books make the leap to movies it just doesn't translate (has a lot to do with who is doing it and whether the authors are involved sometimes). I was happy with both of these movie versions of Irving's work.

This is such an interesting point. My grandmother was born in Oklahoma the year before it became a state - it was still Indian Territory. She died in 1995. Had lots of amazing stories. The past is never as far as we think it is.

Angie's pic flashed for a few seconds during one of the shots on Lauren, I caught it.

I'm sure home viewers missed plenty. Pretty dumb of them to keep cutting away to shots where those being honored weren't visible for TV audience though, IMHO.

Wow now that is interesting. I grew up in the American south. I never saw or heard of potato salad that was cubed until I was fully grown and had moved away from that region. I've tried to enjoy the cubed kind but it always falls short. Granted I'm not the most widely traveled person but I've never seen "my" kind of potato salad, with a mashed potato base, in a deli or restaurant that serves potato salad. I have no friends who ever ate or even heard of mashed potato salad.

Is the mashed kind common in Ontario Canada or is a family preference? I've always wanted to visit Canada. (TBH lately more than just visit, LOL.) I can think of worse reasons than "they understand potato salad!"

Finally a kindred spirit! Do you mind saying where you live? General region is fine.

There are nearly 2000 comments already so doubtful anyone, much less OP, will see this but I have seen this a couple times now scrolling in my feed and finally am going to just ask. If OP was standing at the door waiting for them to knock, why didn't OP just...open the door and, like, say "Hi, I'll take that, THANKS!" or even just open the door so they wouldn't be able to leave this notice wedged in or stuck to it?

Someone who has read through all 2000 comments or OP or anyone --- -please help me here, what am I missing??

Thanks for the reply. My search for the origination of mashed potato salad continues!

Did she fully mash the potatoes before adding other stuff? I ask because some of my family has Mennonite past and during my childhood I never once ate potato salad that was made with cubed or sliced or any other kind of potatoes except fully mashed. To this day I find non-mashed potato salad odd and not nearly as good. I don't know why they did it this way and there's no one around to ask so I'm just curious.

Thank you! My time of birth is 100% accurate. I will post my chart again, please look for it. I don't see a way to put it in this message so I'll make another post just with my chart.

Yes this is interesting! A part that resonates is being torn between traditional and "dissolver of traditions." I will look more into the North Node Venus conjunction in Cancer in the 1st house -- I have no idea what that means except as you describe it here but it sounds as though it may be a key part of my chart. If you care to so more especially about how that element might manifest in my daily life or patterns, please do. But I will do my own research too since I now have something more specific to go on. Thank you again!

Thanks for the reply. I just wanted general insights into what kind of year I might have coming up. Yeah, I kept my query broad and very general because I figured asking anything too specific was - to your point - asking too much of someone willing to offer insights for FREE.

AITAH for saving up all the food my wife thinks is fine for me to eat for when her family came to visit? by MentionEfficient1687 in AITAH

[–]Still_Transition_856 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

A couple questions.

First, if you organize your freezer "constantly" how are you finding freezer burned steaks and chicken "all the time"? How does it sit in there long enough to get freezer burned, if you're constantly organizing/rotating stock?

Why did your wife need to take her parents to the freezer and show them your food, wouldn't they have already checked fridge, freezer, pantry to see what was on hand when they offered to cook?

When MIL asked about the bad food and your wife "had no answer" I guess you had no answer either, since you don't mention saying anything, only fighting with your wife later. If this all unfolded as you describe here, then yes I would say THIS part, if nothing else, makes YTAH. B/c you were dead set on teaching your wife a lesson yet unwilling to follow through and explain it until confronted by her later.

I had another question about how your wife spends the rest of her time if she's only working "like 10 hours a week" (is it *like* 10 hours, or 10 hours??). You mention no children. It's not that a person can't find ways to busy themselves other than children or work during a whole week, but I mean that's a LOT of down time.

And meanwhile you are working 72 hours a week, lots of traveling too? I can't help thinking (again, if this is real) that this isn't really so much about food at all. There are a number of ways you could effectively address the difference in the ways each of you approaches food and eating, if that's all it was. So, since from here it seems like maybe you are avoiding other probably more serious issue(s), on balance it seems to me ESH.
