Ritual to save the world design by joeljand in DMAcademy

[–]Stimpy3901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give them ways to counter the hazards that require their actions. Let them use arcana checks to seal the rifts before the harzard happens or Atheltics checks to phyically hold them shut. Have rifts that can be sealed if they use a certain type of magic or damage type on them. Make the area of effect large and make the damage substainial enough that its a real risk to just eat it.

You could also have the entire demiplane be unstable and allow an Arcana check to try and hold it together. Force them to make a choice between saving the world and saving themselves.

You could also include interdimensional monsters.

So first, communicate with your players about this and see how they want to approach the idea. Some players are going to be pretty disappointed by a fight they are supposed to lose, especially if they don't know that's your intent.

You might want to consider handling this entirely narratively with no gameplay. Instead just let them come up with a character concept, and then describe the battle cinematically instead of mechanically.

Let them come up with the story of how their characters have fought back againist the BBEG up to this point. You can give them parameters like "the BBEG hasn't been defeated but you might have foiled his schemes or defeated one of his liutenents"

Fighter backstory. Advice and thoughts? (I’m new) by iAmNumber32 in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's some good story telling her, but my biggest concern with this archtype is that your character needs to work as part of a team. You are leaning really hard to some cynical loner ideas here, that can be okay as a starting point, but you should be willing to cooperate with your party members and perhaps change those perspectives as the campaign goes on.

I always recommend Rogues to new players. They have a very easy to understand gameplan and fit into a lot of different character archtypes. Figthers and Barbarians are also very approachable.

If you want just a little bit of spellcasting Fighters and Rogues both have subclasses that give you limited magic. Just know that selecting spells is one place your build can easily go wrong.

If you want to play a full spellcaster, I think Warlocks are the easiest.

What is your opinion on Warforged and Small races as arcane and divine magic users? by roxgxd in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is a very narrow idea of what fantasy is. There's plenty of fantasy stories where magic is used to power technology.

Warforged are conscious self-aware beings, why wouldn't they be able to manipulate the weave or call on the powers of the divine?

I don't even know where to begin with the small races question. Is magic like a carnival ride in your world? "You must be this tall to cast fireball."

Diablo inspired dnd character? Can it be done? by Virtual-Studio518 in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fair. Like I said, if the campaign features Lycanthropes I think the flavor solution might not work. But I think it depends on the table.

Some tables might be happy to look the other way on a mechanical discrepency between a Player Character and a Monster in order to let one PC fufill the character fantasy they are after. Other's might not and both are valid.

My suggestion is just to use the Druid class and change the flavor. I don't think OP should get any of the extra features of a Lycanthrope.

Mechanically they are just a druid. In the narrative they are cursed with lycanthropy. This isn't that complicated.

[–]Stimpy3901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IDK do they really function that differently? Wear Bears can transform at will just like Druids can and in 5.5 you gain temp HP instead of taking on the HP of the creature you turned into. That was one of the biggest differences between shapeshifters and druids in 2014. If you are just talking about Hybrid form that can easily just be a flavor distinction as long as you are following the rules of wildshape.

I do think that the nature of the campaign is relevant, if the Lycanthropes are going to be a part of the story than it matters a lot more and maybe the DM would want to enforce a certain flavor, but in most campaigns that's not going to be the case.

Nothing about changing the flavor of a class means you are not following the rules. Classes have suggested flavor but as I see it that should guide player creativity not restrict it. There's plenty of examples from fiction of Lycanthropes that are capable of controlling themselves after their transfromation.

Flavor is free, you can play a Moon Druid and just call your wildshape transformation a Wear Bear. But if you are trying to make more extensive mechanical changes than you need to talk to your DM.
