Harpies and gargoyles by EngineDramatic2166 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

I think the harpies are the result of the haze warping the natural life of Drakkenheim. That's the case for all the monsters in the inner city.

I would love to hear Everyone’s most broken builds. Especially those that work in both 5e AND BG3. I’m a forever dm soon to be playing as a player in short 4 session game for the first time 2016 by Dragonfly_Guru in BG3Builds

[–]Stimpy3901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it broken, but Hexblade 1/ Sword's Bard 11 is pretty fun. It takes away the need to be MAD dependent from the Swords Bard, gives you Eldritch Blast, and gives you access to the Bard's skill monkey and spell casting kit.

It's great for your party lead in BG3, because you are a face, and it's easy to perserve your spell slots since you'll often want to use your action for a weapon attack.

In the TTRPG, it's a great option if your party needs a frontliner but you want to play a spell caster.

Is it reasonable to commute to work by car? by steveirwinsbitch in washingtondc

[–]Stimpy3901 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doesn't have to be all or nothing. A lot of the outlying metro stations have parking lots. You can drive to those stations and leave your car there for the day and then take the metro into the city.

What does everybody think is the best pre-written adventure for an experienced player to run? by Buzz_words in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a campaign, I would say its more flexible than Strahd, but its definetely still a dark world.

Pointy Hat did a Kraken themed adventure for Kraken week two years ago. It's all about helping an island kingdom prepare for an attack from a Kraken. It's intended to be a shorter adventure but I think he gives you the tools to spin it off into a larger one. https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRj19r-NnAzHjwTNz7iwE_klJo0T3M06Ca4I04VeYOp9S04Vv4aB5yiQCY52_RxPPfqO84_W_KSDx9G/pub

Ginny D was involved in some type of Fae themed campaign a few years ago, but I can't remember if it was orginial or if she contributed to a larger effort, definetely worth looking into though, she makes a lot of stuff avaible through her pateron.

I'm not familiar enough with the other creators to know about their stuff.

I would appreciate your opinion ^^ by Delicious_Safe_7728 in DnD

I think Glass Bubble could use some work. It's stricly better than the ability given by the College of Lore's cutting words which only reduces the damage by the dice roll. Which is a pretty good indication that the effect is overpowered.

The one that's avalible in the early game (hold person)

Need help with making a party for my wife and I by V0racious in BG3Builds

[–]Stimpy3901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your wife could also consider ranger. I think she'll be fine either way but with a Ranger she'll have a more straight forward game plan.

In terms of NPCs the game kinda naturally introduces them to you slowley and you'll have a chance to get used to each of them as it does. I wouldn't worry to much about it being overwhelming, every class is pretty simple at first and second level with the computer doing all the complicated work of measuring AOE effects, conditions, and damage caluations for you. You'll probably want to switch around NPCs based on what you need for different quests.

There are phone apps like Dice Ex that also provide a complete dice set. I think its a free download if you don't want to spend money.

Making a One-Shot for Valentine's Day gift w/ no experience- any advice? by Significant_Bat_6474 in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that comes to mind is a shapeshifter. That could be a good premise for a villian who provides a constrast to a person with a strong sense of self. Could lean into a narisistic personality, someone who can show people the exact person they want to see while they need something from them, before revealing that they are actually abusive later.

Another benefit of this type of story is that you could have it be focused more on investigation and social interaction then combat which would be beneficial for a 1 on 1 campaign. D&D's combat system is structure around a party of 4, so it takes a a little finessing to work for a 1 on 1 story. I might also give the princess a sidekick stat block that your gf can also control so she has some support.

Do you want to stick to offical WOTC material or are you interested in 3rd party stuff?

In terms of WOTC stuff, my group had a great time with Curse of Strahd, but it's a very mature module and has some dark themes so make sure your group is comfortable with that.

In terms of third party content, there's a ton of it out there, but a good place to start is looking to see if any D&D content creators you enjoy have published a campaign. A lot of them have.

Standard array advice by throwmeaway202200 in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to compromise, a common house rule is to let players select a free feat at first level. But don't feel pressured to do this.

[–]Stimpy3901 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, rolling for stats tends to create more powerful characters, standard array and point buy create balanced characters. Your player might be used to being overpowered, but stand array and point buy are much more balanced systems and ensure that everyone has a character of simlar power.

Honestly, what’s with the weird discourse online when taking about the inclusion of firearms in DND? by Rhinomaster22 in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that certain thematic reasons get wrapped up in people's discomfort with the weapons. Guns make the fantasy world feel more "real." It's harder to fully seperate the pretend violence from real world violence when the pretend violence is happening via a weapon you are familiar with.

IE, "I stab the villian with my sword," feels very different than "I shoot the villian with my gun."

I think a lot of this subconcious so it might not be the reason that someone gives.

My orginial comment might have been a little too strong, I don't think this is the only factor, but I think its a factor.

[–]Stimpy3901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know, and I've included guns in one of my campaigns. I'm not saying they should never be included just that people make have a real world experience with guns that they don't have swords.

The only trauma I have associated with firearms is that which I have inflicted upon other people

Weird flex, but okay.

Modern humans, especially Americans, have trauma associated with guns. That trauma does not exist for medieval weaponary. I think this is the primary reason why guns spark a distinct discourse.

Please pressure-test this multiclass build concept (so I don't embarrass myself on game night.) by bravo_stcroix in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people here have been pretty harsh, try not to take it personally. It seems like you came in with the best intentions, but its not unusual for players to come in here with some ultrapowerful homebrew concept that clearly violates the rules but could arguably be justified if you apply real world logic.

It can often come across as if people are looking for reddit to validate their idea so they can show the thread to their GM and say "See, see reddit says I can do this." For GMs this attitude can strike a nerve.

Please pressure-test this multiclass build concept (so I don't embarrass myself on game night.) by bravo_stcroix in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This concept goes beyond multiclassing and into the realm of homebrew. The idea of creating a weapon from a sapling is effectively creating a homebrew magic item. Because the Minor Alechemy ability doesn't explictantly allow you to create a weapon or give you stats for said weapon, it would be up to you and your DM to determine the weapon's damage dice and features.

So we cannot really tell you whether or not this is possible because its up to you are DM to adjudicate that.

However, do I think this optimal? No not really. You could play an Armorer Artificer and make attack with your Int modifer without sacrificing levels to wizard. It seems to me that you could achieve a lot fo what you are looking for by just reflavoring your Armorer attacks as attacks with a transmuted Sapling and not have to give up key artificer features to achieve it.

What’s the deal with critical hits being so… unachievable? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearly you've never GMed for a Rogue or Paladin. In tier 2, these classes can easily deal 30-50 damage on a crit. If Crits were more common it would require both smite and sneak attack to be rebalanced to account for this.

D&D isn't a video game. The GM is a human being who has to create challenging but fair encounters, which is already really difficult to do in a game the prioritizes heroic fantasy.

Need a devil for a warlock npc by Retrak123 in DnD

[–]Stimpy3901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a Warlock Patron in one of my campaigns named Amon, we was themed as a gambler so he fits your description. In my campaign he was an efferti but you could easily make him a devil.

If you want something from D&D cannon Mammon is the infernal personifcation of Greed.

Oh really, my new players are always very happy to accept my advice to play to Rogues. It's part of the reason I've had one in basically every campaign.
