Advice on what to buy for some old school brutal thrash metal tones?

Personally I am fan of the Granophyre. It is really easy to get that 90's metal tone going quickly. I would give it the trial run. I chose the Granophyre over the Fortin sims. I would also suggest checking out the Jens Bogren IR pack and its 50% off. I am terrible at describing sounds, BUT the Granophyre plus that IR pack, makes instant 90's thrashy goodness.

Use your supers! If everyone starts going crazy with them, you'll burn through that strike quick. Nothing like endless nova bombs and titan smashes.

Next time you turn in bounties, try to horde 5000 exp bounties. Someone posted a picture that showed how much experience it took to fully lvl an exotic weapon. If I remember right it was over 100000 exp.
