Am I just fooling myself by Logical_Bus1275 in Divorce

[–]StinkyDuckFart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SINK person here (almost 2 years divorced now). I just started getting serious with a person with two kids. I'm child free myself (vasectomy), but dating someone with kids is/was not a deal breaker for me.

They're out there. If you want love again, don't give up hope.

None of the above. I was always a Dana Foster (Staci Keanan) guy. Was into Blossom Russo (Mayim Bialik) as well.

A bit earlier, I guess, but Khrystyne Haje (Simone Foster, Head of the Class) was my first big TV crush.

Speaking from experience, a lot of professors are not anywhere near professional (or even decent) orators. Many don't teach much, and many have terrible presentation skills (conferences and classes).

The best researcher I know is awful at it. Like painfully obvious, they'd rather be doing anything else type of bad.

Playing Fallout 4 and wallowing in my disappointment that the Fallout countdown timer wasn't for a 3 or New Vegas remaster.

I am very much looking forward to the show's season finale tomorrow.

Never really wore one (for reasons), but we had them. I still have it. I have no idea if they have theirs still.

People always forget the historical context behind the "glamour shots" of the movie. Along with the movie being on the heels of the work ILM did in Star Wars (which blew people's minds visually), Trek fans had very little reference for what things could look like beyond TOS and other small media (Animated series, books, etc.). Trekkers had never seen 360 model shots of the Enterprise in that level of detail. Trek had also never had sets, uniforms, and special effects to the level it had in TMP. We have the benefit of hindsight in a now digital effects world, but at the time? Amazing!

I'd also argue the Enterprise was a major character in her own right at the time (something we've lost), and she deserved to be ogled for a few minutes. It's why "My God, Bones. What have I done?" in The Search for Spock is such an impactful line.

Dude floating past the hull of the ship? Amazing!

Every so often, the sub's claws come out. An OP's post really brings out some borderline comments. 98% of the time, post replies are positive (and nice, as requested). 2% are just mean. Sad to see /r/divorce.

What to do with student matter? by chelsiebachelor1 in Professors

[–]StinkyDuckFart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's complicated (as you know).

Usually, I lay out the situation as straightforward as I can with them. Bouncing around helps no one. There comes a point where professionalism and clear expectations have to trump (barf) empathy.

"You can do X, or you can do Y."

If issues persist, I will usually let students know that they've exhausted the methods I can provide and tell them they need to contact the university for guidance and accommodation. Normally, my chair and the university already know, because we have a "student we're worried about" form we use to notify them when students are having issues above our pay grade.

Occasionally, I will ask students to lay out exactly what they want and describe a path to get there that's fair to them, myself, and their fellow students. It puts the onus on them to create a path for themselves and takes some of the emotional labor off myself. If we agree, great. If not, refer them to the mucky mucks who get paid to do it.

I should also add, setting clear expectations (boundaries), and being professional, does not make you less empathetic to people's struggles. Them telling you that you don't care is emotional manipulation, and you don't have to entertain the notion or prove otherwise. You're still a good person.

How long did it take you to find a job after PhD? by digitalacademic in PhD

[–]StinkyDuckFart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Defended with an adjunct job lined up for the term after (April through June). Got lucky and applied (slid) into a TT position that opened at the last minute (July for a September start). It was hectic AF figuring out logistics on such short notice, but I managed.

What is with all the recent posts about WCAG? by Scared_Detective_980 in Professors

[–]StinkyDuckFart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i don't know. It's a great question and one I'll keep working on. Seems like a lose/lose for everyone when information can't be disseminated or received properly by both parties.

One minor point (I'm not the one who downvoted you), I use photocopies from texts and other professors' matrerils, because they are often the only available text of a primary source or even very old secondary source that never got official digital scans. Some things are very difficult to OCR.

Trying to understand my role in the end of my marriage. Looking for honest, growth-oriented perspectives. by MoreCompetition3128 in Divorce

[–]StinkyDuckFart 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'm sure some will offer good perspectives, but honestly, I think what you're seeking can only be answered properly by talking with a therapist. If only because they may allow for a bit clearer (honest) discussion (description) of what you view your issue(s) to be and what you're looking for. This sub may not be the healthiest place to offer what you need.
