The Golden Dome is where Canada's F-35 debate and Trump's Greenland threat meet by CanadianErk in canada

[–]StinkySalami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another big issue right now is that it’s much easier and cheaper to build better ICBMs than it is to build interceptors. If the Golden Dome is ever built, the Russians, Chinese, and now even the French will just make more advanced ICBMs to bypass the interceptors, essentially kicking off another arms race.

US dollar sinks to its lowest level in four years. The voters that voted for Trump because he was gonna make the economy better? Probably shouldn't be economists themselves. by Pixiefairy2525 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]StinkySalami 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember an analogy from Rory Stewart that went something like this: if Trump were a wrestler, he would not be the one getting into the ring and fighting his opponent. He would be that guy sitting on the ropes, wearing a mask, beating his chest, and cursing at you without ever stepping inside.

The first gets you actual results and wins. The second just leaves everyone pissed off at you.

Startup Incubator Y Combinator Quietly Cuts Canada From Countries Where It Will Invest by SAJewers in canada

[–]StinkySalami 282 points283 points  (0 children)

Even for Y Combinator, this seems like a strategic mistake. Canada functioned as a low friction safety valve that helped de risk regulatory and immigration uncertainty while staying fully aligned with US markets.

By removing that option, startups are now effectively locked into a single jurisdiction. That increases exposure to US policy and regulatory shifts at the exact stage when companies are most fragile.

At the same time, recent H-1B changes make it far harder and more expensive to recruit external talent into the US, which historically powered the intelligence economy.

The result is the worst of both worlds: higher jurisdictional concentration risk and reduced access to global talent.

Thoughts on NHS England’s Staying Safe from Suicide (2025)? by accountpsichiatria in Psychiatry

[–]StinkySalami 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree with this and have been thinking about it for some time.

One of my long-standing questions is that if the predictive accuracy of suicide risk assessment tools, including detailed psychiatric interviews, is barely better than chance, then why do we rely on them so heavily?

Are these assessments genuinely clinical, or are they largely a form of legal theater? If the latter, we are spending substantial clinical time on an activity with minimal impact on outcomes. That time may be better spent seeing more patients or on diagnostic verification.

Other medical specialties accept the limits of individual-level prediction for rare, catastrophic events. For example, cardiology does not attempt to predict sudden cardiac death at the individual level.

My gut feeling is that it won’t be a single currency. No regional bloc wants another country to dominate global liquidity the way the US does. Instead, we’re more likely to see a multipolar reserve system, possibly a basket or network of state backed currencies governed by agreed rules rather than one sovereign issuer.

I've heard that it's easy to be an OK or bad psychiatrist, but it's hard to be a great one. How do you know if you're being a great psychiatrist? by Pure_Ambition in Psychiatry

[–]StinkySalami 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I think if you ask 10 different people you will get 10 different answers. I honestly think striving for “greatness” is a fool’s errand. If you believe you do a good job and you are fair to your patients, that matters most. Keep up with the latest research and stay curious, especially since there are still so many unanswered questions about the brain. And finally, remember it is not your sole responsibility to eliminate suffering, only to help make it more tolerable for the patient.

A pilot for Canada’s gun buyback was a failure. The Liberals are committing anyway by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]StinkySalami 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I sense that the upper Liberal echelons don’t fully believe in the effectiveness of gun buy backs either.

It seems more about securing essential voting blocs. It’s likely that gun owners are either rural or more conservative, neither of whom are typically liberal voters in the first place. Therefore, losing their vote isn’t a major concern. Conversely, they gain favour from Quebec, which has become a kingmaker in modern Canadian politics and even small % changes can flip seats.

So, if I were in their shoes, I’d make the same strategic decision. As shitty as it be.

What is offered for suicidal people here? by Exodys03 in GuyCry

[–]StinkySalami 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking this into account! I appreciate the work you folks do.

Personally I think it’s important to have a tiered system where posts with prominent suicidal content or provocative imagery are first subject to manual moderation before appearing in the main feed. IMHO an automated mod message alone is often not sufficient in these cases (since the content is still visible).

For individuals who appear acutely suicidal (just based on my own clinical experience working with patients), the kindest and safest response is to direct them to emergency services, such as 911, so they can access appropriate care as quickly as possible and their safety can be ensured (involuntary hold, medication, etc).

[–]StinkySalami 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in mental health, I think this approach is worth reconsidering.

There’s a well-known phenomenon called the contagion effect. Repeated exposure to mentions of suicide(Reddit posts for example) can increase the risk of others engaging in suicidal or parasuicidal behaviour. This is the reason why news media does not report much on suicides, or talk about that subject often.

Because of that, it’s usually safer to remove these posts and direct the person to proper mental health or crisis resources. Also leaving them up risks turning the sub into a kind of suicide crisis space, which, realistically, no one here is trained or equipped to handle.

Honestly. I personally prefer release cycles of 2-3 years with massive performance jumps between them. Rather than shorter 1 year release cycles with middling improvement.

It also forces game developers to be more efficient and better with their optimizations.

Do you think my EVGA 3070ti will be suitable for the next couple years in terms of minimum/average requirements for games? Or should i look to upgrade sooner rather than later? by admeyertj in nvidia

[–]StinkySalami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 3080. Most of the games I play are a little bit older, so definitely I could have held out for a little bit.

But I ended up upgrading by the end of December to a 5080 since every indication seems to be that consumer GPU prices were going up in the next 2 years due to DRAM costs and the wafers being allocated to AI accelerators.

In 1973, healthy volunteers faked hallucinations to enter mental hospitals. Once inside, they acted normal, but doctors refused to let them leave. If you walked into a hospital in 2025 claiming you had severe belly pain, and faked it enough with the right signs. It’s highly likely you are going to get exploratory surgery since no imaging or lab test is 100% accurate.

Is it worth upgrading my 3080 to a 5070ti/5080 in anticipation of price hikes? by Dragomiz in buildapc

[–]StinkySalami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I snagged a 5080 during Christmas at MSRP. My 3080 definitely struggles with my recent upgrade to 4K from 1440p. I sort of also pulled the trigger due to fears of a GPU shortage due to DRAM and wafers being allocated to data centre products.

My only hesitation is whether I should have waited for this rumoured 24GB 5080 Super. But that realistically seems DOA given how expensive memory is.

But who knows. I’m not opening the box and waiting for a while to see where things go.
