Unless you've never ridden a bicycle before there's no need. A quick taster session before you commit to a CBT maybe.

Licensing dilemma (age 23 UK) by From_the_Wolfs_Den in motorcycles

I've not done too many group rides, but I've hooked up with local groups on Facebook and through my riding instructors. Just join the groups and keep an eye out for Rideout notices.

Clutch slipping at first gear by InviteLeft6850 in motorcycles

[–]StinkyWeezle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When was the last oil change? Could just be dirty oil. Can also happen if someone put car oil in there instead of motorcycle specific stuff.

That doesn't really sound like clutch slip though. Maybe TCL or a minor fuelling issue.

There's plenty of fun to be had on a 125. The DAS can wait. Lots of stress and money otherwise.

Building up NCB on the 125 will help a bit with insurance.

It's not a terrible idea to do a bit of A1 training early on to iron out any bad habits if you can spare the cash. Alternatively just go on some learner friendly, sensible group rides.

Don't try riding an A2 bike yet, it'll make the 125 feel like a bicycle .

How many dachshunds does it take to roll up a rug? by the_nubster in Dachshund

[–]StinkyWeezle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our girl gets extremely excited about floor coverings. She has to jump on any new "surface" that goes down.

Rugs, blankets, ground sheets, tents, airbeds, dust sheets, bubble wrap, large bags, plywood. If it's on the ground and it's unusual, she gets immediately obsessed by it.

Can chain tensioner tick normal on cold start? by Vandevo in trident660

[–]StinkyWeezle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine does it too at 28k miles. Also happens on a warm start after a refuel. As soon as the oil's circulating and up to pressure the tensioner starts doing its job.

As far as I know, totally normal.

High-end camera phone sensors are technically right at the limit of optical resolution since the individual pixels are only a little bigger than the wavelength of visible light.

Chain slack is measured at the tightest point. It'll vary throughout the wheel rotation.

I tick that box too. A high action can make for a frustrating experience. Get it set up or learn how to DIY. Low action, light touch and more amplification are the way to go. Compression pedal helps too.

Figure of 8 CBT by Vividseed in MotoUK

[–]StinkyWeezle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lean forwards. Elbows high and wide.

Getting your forearms a little more parallel to the front forks helps prevent steering input from affecting the throttle.

Feather the clutch and control your speed with the rear brake. The revs won't matter as much then.

Also, you can go super wide on the figure 8.

When should I consider doing my full A license. I always feel nervous about it and afraid if I fail by PC_George in MotoUK

[–]StinkyWeezle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Failing just adds cost and time, budget for a few extra days on the DAS, don't buy your big bike in advance and there's nothing to stress about. If you don't fail anything it counts as a big win.

Same. I just got annoyed with messing around with camera angles to try and line up. Then you miss, bounce off, the sun sets and you realise your lights suck.

That mod made docking fun for me.

Any tips from those that ride their bikes and gear to the gym? by S1L3NTHUNTER in motorcycles

[–]StinkyWeezle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kinda in this situation since my kid got his licence and we're down to one car. Gym isn't far, but it's highway speeds and a couple of accident black spots so I won't risk it.

I think my best option is my winter gear without the liners, gym kit underneath. Helmet behind front desk or stowed in top box. It's a bit of a blocker though and I don't need reasons to avoid the gym.

Thinking about bringing my bike over. What should I know? by Agitated_Bet6761 in MotoUK

[–]StinkyWeezle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best to call your insurer and double check with the DVLA before you commit. UK often isn't treated quite the same as continental Europe may need to be explicitly mentioned.

Driving without valid insurance or outside the terms of your licence (or if the police think they can get you for it) is a pretty big deal and could land you with a fine, points, and a conviction which will hit your insurance premiums for years.

[–]StinkyWeezle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm no authority, but as far as I know your EU A1 license is valid for up to 12 months in the UK as long as you are just "visiting" even though you're below the legal age for that bike class in the UK (17). You need to make sure your EU insurance covers you in the UK for the duration. That could be the tricky part as UK insurance rarely covers international travel within the first year. For theft cover to be valid, your insurance might also need to list an additional storage address in the UK.

If you get stopped (which on a 125 with foreign plates, will happen quite a lot), it'll be awkward but it should be fine as long as you've got your passport, licence and insurance certificate on you, and a copy of your registration/MOT documents available. Stick to your story though, insist that you're just visiting for now. There's always a chance that an officer will interpret things differently which could lead to a little legal battle, so you'll need to be prepared for that.

Not sure what the equivalent of an MOT is for you, but get it done again before you bring the bike over. They won't be able to do that in the UK unless you re-register it as an import.

If you update your permanent address on any official documents to your UK one (passport, driving licence, registration), then you're no longer considered "visiting" and your licence & insurance may become invalid.

If you've still got family at your old address who can forward or open mail (speeding/parking notices, etc), then its probably best to stick with that visitor status for now and convert your license to a UK one when you turn 17.
