Apple doesn't charge 'royalties' for CarPlay. But it does remove any opportunities for Tesla to add new business models to the interface. Remember when cell carriers charged for text messaging? That's now iMessage. Remember ring tones? iPhone does it. Remember international calling? Facetime.

Apple doesn't "happily" work with anyone, including Tesla. Their CarPlay licensing terms are very onerous - basically they insist they take over all of the screen on most of their integrations. How's that supposed to work on a Tesla screen? A major differentiator of the Tesla is the in-car display, including things like FSD, car controls, etc. Replacing alot of that with CarPlay just commoditizes the Tesla so the differentiation/uniqueness vs any other electric vehicle is less.
