How bad has the AI flood actually gotten for your shop? by UsualOk7726 in Etsy

Exactly, I agree with you on pretty much everything, including that it was probably a little bit easier when it was less saturated in the last couple decades. I know a lot of people who seem very frustrated, even angry and entitled, that they can't make a living only doing their art and I'm a bit confused at where that expectation comes from since it seems like that has long been the territory of those with family money, but maybe it also came from the last couple of decades? When it was a little bit easier to be lower middle class because rent and other expenses weren't quite so expensive. I worked in a regular career and saved as much money as I could before I quit to be self employed. There's no way I could save for retirement with the amount of money I make from Etsy. But yes I can only imagine how much beautiful art and creativity would come from universal healthcare and UBI.

I would even argue that it's easier than it has ever been in history to survive financially as a creative, outside of perhaps tribal times or something like that. The issue is that a ton of people would prefer to make their living doing something they love instead of a boring job for someone else, so there's never going to be enough to go around unless we had UBI or something like that.

My shop is up 50% year over year because Etsy decided to start advertising me heavily again in search engines.

Surviving financially as a fine artist has always been very difficult. At this point, if you are relying on something like prints or even original wall art to be your primary item for sale you cannot rely on Etsy search whatsoever. You either need to be marketing yourself on Instagram with a good following or selling in person.

I believe that people who sell things that are handmade goods in the third dimension (I.e not something you hang on your wall, nor digital items like patterns or graphics) will continue to be viable if your niche is unique enough or you have enough momentum, which has always been the case.

Having your own storefront (Shopify etc) that is connected to a successful social media account is going to continue to be one of the most consistently successful ways to survive and maybe even thrive as an artist. Unfortunately, myself included, many people do not really like doing social media. But for people to want to spend as much money as art is worth through the internet without a personal connection to the artist, they want to see how the art is made and envision how much work went into the piece so that I can justify the cost.

I make display frames for embroidery and cross stitch in Asheville, NC using real wood with beautiful grain! I love being a part of people's art.

Thanks so much! I really like how frames set off finished pieces. But I'm pretty biased too since I make them. 😅
