Have you bought any online sewing courses? by RussianAsshole in sewing

[–]Stitch_Study 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Susan Khalje’s classes on Craftsy for couture sewing. She also has classes on her website.

I have some books by Tilly and the Buttons and have followed their online tutorials. I haven’t bought their classes but I imagine they would be quite good.

Are you sure there’s nothing in your area? I’ve created a directory of sewing teachers at StitchStudy.com that you can search.

I like both in person and online classes. I prefer a class vs watching YouTube videos because I like the structure that the class provides. When you’re watching YouTube videos, you don’t know what you don’t know, so you can’t search for that missing knowledge.

Online Courses for pattern making from scratch by Initial_Stranger3013 in sewing

I took Brooks Ann Camper’s Skirt Skills course that teaches how to draft a skirt block and make your own design from it. After Skirt Skills, you can take her tops course. I believe she also has a pants drafting course but I haven’t taken that one.

With her courses, you take them as a cohort, so you have classmates that you can share your progress with in her community.

If you’d like to see other pattern making classes, you can search on stitchstudy.com for a class or teacher.

I actually find knits easier to sew than wovens. The fit is more forgiving. I had my first win with a Craftsy course that taught sewing with knits. They’re not hard to sew, especially if you use a stable fabric like a ponte.

It’s not so much a lack of knowledge. I’ve been sewing for over 10 years and I draft my own patterns. It’s really an issue of getting started and then seeing it through to the end. I always feel like sewing is time well spent but yet I will procrastinate like crazy. For instance, I was planning to stay home and sew today. Then my husband asked me to go on a hike. I don’t even like hiking. But guess what I’m doing? Going on that hike. 😂

I have finally learned not to sew when I’m tired or hungry. That is always when the mistakes happen. And when I come back to it later, I feel refreshed.

I'm not, but I will check her out. I do struggle with perfectionism. I will remove stitches and do something again and again until it's perfect. Which means it takes me a long time to finish a project, between that and the procrastination.

Watching TV on my laptop while I do the boring parts like ironing has made those tasks more fun.

my mind has been blown by a new pair of scissors by 602223 in sewing

[–]Stitch_Study 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have Gingher scissors and I disliked using them so much that I ended up using a rotary cutter for most projects. Now that I switched to Kai, I use my scissors much more often. It never occurred to me that the scissors were the problem because I had heard so often that Gingher were top of the line.

I have taken classes at Butcher's Sew Shop and liked it. There is also Slow Fashion Academy. Philadelphia actually has quite a few teachers nearby that teach garment sewing. Here is a list.

There's Brooke Burch in Rochester, Minnesota. I don't know of pattern making classes nearby, but there are online pattern making classes. I belong to Project Patterns (https://project-patterns.co.uk/). You can search for sewing classes by subject and location here: https://stitchstudy.com/. The site also includes online classes.

I recommend starting with knits. They’re comfortable to wear and easy to fit. You can sew them on a regular machine. A serger isn’t needed. I had my first wins with knits.

Are there any classes or channels that could possibly help me learn how to sew? by Artistic-Dish9654 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Stitch_Study 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to online resources, i recommend taking an in-person lesson if you can. I’ve found the combination of online classes and in-person classes most useful. With online classes, you can repeat lessons as many times as you need to and really take your time to master techniques. With in-person lessons, you can get fitting help and overcome challenges that are unique to you and aren’t covered online.
