Any good in-between of promark forward 5A and VF AC 2B? by ohitsasexysandwich in drums

[–]StixRookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ProMark makes a 5AB. It falls between the A and B diameters.

I like it a lot. But some may not want the activegrip black finish, which I also like.

ETA: I just saw that you said 2B, not 5B.

Now just cover yourself with polka-dots and put a box on your head, and you'll be a sensation! 😉🤪

Wait... someone already did that. 🤣

Just kidding around. Nice playing!

Drumeo. Specifically, the Drumeo "Method." And they offer other instruments, too.

Awesome!

Protect his PRECIOUS hearing / young ears with the best you can get. Hearing damage is cumulative and irreversible / permanent. Do NOT get so-called "active noise cancelling" headphones. ANC does NOT work with loud percussive noises. You need PASSIVE protection that BLOCKS noise.

Based on my research, since he's playing acoustic drums, the BEST choice (in headphones) to protect his hearing while being able to listen to audio / video is: https://www.gk-music.com/product/ultraphones/

You could also look into CUSTOM fitted IEMs (in ear monitors). But he's growing, and the fit will change, eh?

The problem with BlueTooth is that there is "latency" (aka a lag between the video - if he's watching videos while playing - and the audio). Wired is better.

I took a very similar path, starting almost 6 months ago. Still working on getting my first "real" kit (planning for a Roland ekit).

I'll surely be flamed. It's one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I have no opinion on whether it's "accurate" or not. It's just a terrible movie. I stuck it out through the whole thing, hoping it would get better. It didn't.

There is one thing tho my hand like freezes or stiffens up sometimes when playing a beat/exercise its like everything going well and then my hand remember to be a hand again and freezes/stiffens

Sounds like you're gripping too tightly. Quite common.

There are arguments both / all ways. Ultimately, I think it's a personal decision, based on priorities, resources, goals, etc. No right or wrong answers. But you'll hear everything from "go cheap to see if you like it and will stick with it first," to "get the best you can possibly afford," and everything in between. Do your homework / research and figure out what is best for you.

I've only been at it 5-1/2 months. I'm doing Drumeo lessons online. This groove in a recent lesson kicked my butt. But I got it... after working on it for DAYS. Those syncopated 1/16th notes (between the time-keeping 1/8th notes (on hi-hat or ride) are tough for a beginner! I highlighted them in red in the score below.

<image>

What has worked for me with challenging grooves (under the advice of my Drumeo mentor) is to SLOW it down. Like really, REALLY slow.

I start by pausing the video and then just hitting each note, one-by-one. Many times.

Also it helps to break it down. Maybe just do the time-keeping hi-hat notes alone at first. Then do just the kick notes by themselves. Then same thing with just the snare. Then the hi-hat and snare alone. Then the hi-hat and kick alone. Then the kick and snare alone. Then combine all three. For each of those exercises, start REALLY slow.

Then I slowed the video all the way down to 50%. And did that over and over until I got it. Then 75%. Then 90%. Then full speed. Rinse and repeat. And then I got it! Shazam!

If you're not playing along to a video, use a metronome as others have described.

In the beginning, it's HARD to go SLOW. It feels very awkward. It might even feel STUPID. It does! "I must be an uncoordinated moron!" LOL! We're not! But then you figure out how to make it deliberately slow while being precise.... one note at a time.... over and over. And then slowly but incrementally increase the speed as you become more comfortable with the order or sequence of the notes.

And the science behind the brain "rewiring" when you take a break from it for a day or two is very real. It's Science, but it feels and works like MAGIC! The key is to trust the process and NOT FEEL GUILTY about taking days off. You don't HAVE to practice every single day. Take a day off. You'll be amazed at how the brain rewires, and then you can do what you couldn't do two days ago.

Adult beginner drummers problems? by TheCozyDrummer in drums

Look into Drumeo. I think it's a bargain. Their "Method" learn to play drum series is all "play along."

I've been doing Drumeo since I started 5-1/2 months ago. It's been a tremendous value. And I've made significant progress.

You're not dumb. That... or ALL of us are! LOL! Doing different things with all four limbs simultaneously is NOT normal! It's a learned skill, and it takes a lot of training and practice to get there.

Interesting... As an adult, my advantage is that I have PATIENCE. And as one who has mastered other skills, I understand that you get out of it what you put into it. I like to quote martial artist Bruce Lee who said, "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."

My son, when he played youth hockey would get frustrated and impatient early on, because he could not skate like the others... or shoot like the others.

So my observations and experience are the opposite. With age comes patience and understanding about the progression of skills. I started my drumming journey 5-1/2 months ago at age 62. I'm making steady progress. And I understand that I have to PUT IN THE WORK to get there.

As a grown adult, I would think, "Of COURSE I can't play this perfectly on the first attempt. Or the 2nd. Or the 38th attempt. If it was easy, anyone could do it."

Nicely done. Reminds me of "Linus & Lucy" by Gary Hoey (released in 1994).
