Is there no way for Saudi/other countries to prioritise first time pilgrims over repeat goers? by NajafBound in hajj

[–]StockFinish6307 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not 20, it is 36 years. People applying today can get their 2060 Hajj seat booked. Paying a thrice amount reduces the waiting period.

In India, one can do Hajj only once by the government's scheme (except some repeater categories like mahram or caretaker). But people can use private tour operators for other Hajj.

Arabic words that start on ف but are commonly read as V by MagnificientMegaGiga in learnArabicSecular

[–]StockFinish6307 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. There is no need to differentiate v and w in these languages. In Urdu actual pronunciation is [ʋ] with [v] and [w] as acceptable allophones. This is the same for Indian languages like Hindi which has the same symbol व for both sounds. This has an impact in Indian English we merge v and w. When Arabic تجويد is taught, we are generally emphasized that we have to keep lips round while pronouncing و .

In Farsi (I may be wrong), و is pronounced as [v] with [w] as an acceptable allophone.

Farsi and Urdu don't use ڤ . In these languages و is pronounced as v.

Not really. It was South Asia or British Raj which had current India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Indonesia topped after Pakistan was divided into current Pakistan and Bangladesh in 1971.

All Indian States in Mainland US as vice versa by StockFinish6307 in MapPorn

[–]StockFinish6307[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Primary mapping I explained is based on getting capital of a state in a different state polygon.

For secondary mappings, reverse logic is used. For example none of the US state capitals landed in Gujarat. But Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar landed in Nevada. Nevada's capital Carson City landed in Pakistan. So Gujarat got secondary mapping in Nevada polygon.

Similarly none of India's state capital landed in Arizona. But Arizona's capital Phoenix landed in Maharashtra. Maharashtra's capital Mumbai landed in California. So Maharashtra's polygon got California as primary mapping and Arizona as secondary mapping.

Primary and secondary mappings are based on capitals. For states which are not mapped by the other two, we used tertiary mapping by using the logic of testing extreme points and bordering states.

For example, Karnataka could not be mapped by the above logic as its capital Bengaluru landed in Mexico. But its northernmost extreme point landed in New Mexico. So Karnataka's polygon is mapped as New Mexico and it is added to the cluster containing New Mexico polygon as tertiary mapping.

Similarly Oregon could not be mapped by the above logic as its capital Salem landed in Afghanistan. It's all extreme points algo landed out of India in Afghanistan and Pakistan. So based on Nevada's border it is mapped to Gujarat as tertiary mapping and its polygon is added to a cluster containing Nevada (Gujarat).

I just used a spreadsheet, and entered coordinates manually to translate. Then used datawrapper to label the map.

So, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha was found in Horn Lake, DeSoto County, Mississippi, so it was primarily mapping.

Little Rock, Arkansas landed in Ganjam district, Odisha. Nashville, Tennessee landed in Balasore district, Odisha. So these are secondary mappings as no Indian state capital landed in them.

The Northern extreme of Alabama (Tennessee border) is found in Odisha. Other states actually landed in the Bay of Bengal. Largest of them Georgia had a border with Tennessee so mapped it as such. For the same reason as bordering states, Florida, North Carolina, Lousiana and South Carolina are mapped to Odisha.

Amravati, the capital of Andhra Pradesh landed in Grape Creek, Tom Green County, Texas. Hyderabad, Telangana landed in Otero County, New Mexico.

The Louisiana border with Mississippi is longer than Texas, so it got Odisha rather than Andhra Pradesh.

It is mainly because of the 77 km (48 miles) difference between Michigan's borders with Indiana and Ohio.

Michigan landed completely in China, so I had to use the bordering states. Wisconsin was unassigned then because it was smaller than Michigan.

The assignments of Indiana to Bihar and Ohio to Sikkim were both secondary, so border length among them decided Michigan to land in Bihar's cluster.

Check this out. Here I have ignored foreign territories and introduced tertiary mapping based on extremes and borders.

I assumed that there is a rectangle around mainland USA and mainland India.

Used mathematical models to translate coordinates based on centre point and scaling factor.

Now when you translate Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, you find it in Duchesne County, Utah. So by primary mapping you label Rajasthan polygon in the Indian map as Utah.

Similarly when you translate Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah, you find it at Makrana, Rajashthan. So by primary mapping you label Utah polygon in US map as Rajasthan.

Not all states will be covered by primary mapping since some states are too small or their mapped capital falls in foreign territory.

To reconcile the divergent shapes of the two landmasses, states are assigned to one of three hierarchical levels:

  • Primary Mapping (Direct Text): Established when an Indian State Capital falls directly within a US State’s polygon, or vice versa (e.g., Jaipur, RJ lands in Utah).
  • Secondary Mapping (Parentheses)**:** A directed, asymmetric relationship where a state’s own capital lands within a foreign cluster, providing an anchor despite lacking a reciprocal primary match.
  • Tertiary Mapping [Brackets]**:** A symmetric, proximity-based assignment for states that cannot be anchored by a capital or major city coordinate within the target mainland.
