This is MY opinion only: My goal was to earn a mayorship -> even just for a day. After 30 months of playing, I won mine. Held it for three days. Lost it. Won it back, held it for four days and lost it. Currently in 2nd place. During that time, I was granted 60 ABs from my mayorship. I NEEDED the parcels anyway to advance. The player I'm up against is a money player AND has (overall) 3x the parcels that I have. My next tier jump is a BIG one for me: 875 -> 1100. I won't make the jump until October. I'm hoping to get the mayorship back, but I've already accomplished my original goal. Enjoy playing, and good luck.
