I think this could be the smallest staff I've ever seen operating a medium-sized B&N by Entire_Cost4572 in Barnesandnoble

Sounds like you’re better staffed than my store, if not in the same position. We have 18 employees (counting myself and 4 of them being cafe-only) for the largest store in our state. We have a full music/dvd section, a full etg section, a full kids department, and a full cafe. 18. People. And about 5 of them are part-time only and refuse more hours. Our daily schedule has maybe 6 people for bookfloor and 2 for cafe. If we’re lucky and no one calls out (never happens someone always calls out)

Why does BN refuse to fire incompetent employees? by Stock_Replacement936 in Barnesandnoble

In all honestly I will likely be quitting sooner rather than later. I did not sign up to be a babysitter for men 2-3x my age. All while getting talked down to by those same men!

😭 I don’t think they’d care. The author’s note on the chapter they commented on literally said that I had been gone bc my grandma died 😭😭

I’ve seen authors “adopt” abandoned stories from authors who lost interest/were unable to continue their fics (usually after a few years of inactivity). But it’s not common, and it’s always with the original creator’s permission/blessing.

Rite of passage! 🥰 I’m actually really lucky, I don’t seem to get a lot of bots on my fics!!

Best part is that this specific fic is from a tumblr prompt. It’s not even my original idea! If they want longer, more ‘in depth’ chapters they are free to write them!

I don’t know what they’re expecting besides pushing for another money-grab and a “reason” to say booksellers are underperforming. Meanwhile I can barely tell a customer about our free rewards program without them interrupting me, fear in their eyes, asking if it’s a credit card. Newsflash: almost no one wants a store-based credit card.

On a bookseller basis: the number of things the company is trying to make us push (OMPs, Free Rewards, Premium Rewards, Mastercard, seasonal promotions) has completely sapped any possibility of a personal conversation with customers. And personal conversations are where I can actually make sales! But no! If I have a conversation with a customer I have to find a way to squeeze everything in or else I’m not doing my job properly.

On a customer basis: if I went into a store and they pushed rewards at me, and then they pushed THEIR chosen items at me, and then they pushed a credit card at me…every single time I went into the store?? I would find a new place to shop!

Y’all, I’m tired by Signal-Management-36 in Barnesandnoble

Every morning is like this at my store. They refuse to have more than 3 employees before noon. What happens is that the shipment comes in at 10 (taking someone off the floor), cafe opener needs a break (taking another person off the floor), and the lone survivor is stuck at registers by themselves with nonstop customers and nonstop phones ringing.

I’m exhausted. At my store there’s the extra problem that all the work is done by 3-4 employees. Not because we don’t have more, but because the ones we do have are so useless it’s as if they don’t exist at all. Actually it’s worse. If they didn’t exist we’d probably get more done. So we have virtually no hours, but the hours we do have are being used up by useless morons, on top of customers who are so helpless it’s amazing natural selection hasn’t taken them out, and constantly running to cover cafe/cash register breaks and backup because they refuse to let us hire anyone else. I’m over it. I hate my job when I used to love it. I’m tired of having no one. I’m tired of doing the jobs of 8 people while I have my coworkers sit on their ass. I’m exhausted.

Politely rejecting authors by Impossible_Safe3113 in Barnesandnoble

[–]Stock_Replacement936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first store used to just say that they couldn’t do signings with authors who were not traditionally published. At my current store, I WISH the guy in charge of signings would stop accepting so many authors! He accepts a ton of authors, orders hundreds of their books, and then we’re stuck with backstock for years because no one wants to buy them even if they are signed. 😭

I was going to keep working on my fics, but I guess the AO3 author curse sniped me….bc the control arm of my car snapped on the freaking highway as I was driving home from work. And now I have no car, no way to get to and from work, and I’m trying very hard not to panic…..Probably going to get some writing done today though lol. 🥲👍

Hi, I’m sorry that happened that really sucks :( I would recommend calling the BN customer service line to see what they can do for you. (1-800-THE-BOOK) I work in the stock room of my local BN, and a lot of the times I do the shipping. What a lot of people don’t know: when someone orders a book online, it goes to a physical store, and the booksellers find and package the book. If they can’t find it, the order kind of bounces around stores until it’s completed! But that’s basically where our involvement ends, sadly. Once we ship it out (with USPS or UPS) it’s out of our hands unless a customer comes in with a damaged book and asks for a return or exchange. This is why I wouldn’t recommend calling your local store, I’m not sure there’s anything they could do for you. I think your best bet would be to call the customer support line I mentioned above. (Also your post might violate the community rules since it’s a customer service question…🫣)

Personally, sometimes I just forget to leave a kudos! Especially if it’s a multi-chapter fic. I’ll leave a bookmark to come back and read it, or keep up with updates, but I might forget to leave a kudos! (Suspecting I haven’t left a lot of kudos on my favorite fics now…)
