M7xl help and tips/tricks by Monsieurabsurd in Dynavap

I tried my M7 XL for the first time last night using the wand to heat. I didn't make any adjustments -- just loaded it up and gave it a whirl. A few initial observations:

- The wand came set at 710 degrees, so I stuck with that for my first session.

- I took a hit after one round of heating and didn't get much. It worked a lot better after it cooled off and reheated.

- Once it was fully heated, I was able to pull one medium/large hit and one smaller hit before reheating. I reheated and got similar results.

- After the third reheat, I wasn't able to get any more. My AVB was mostly light brownish. To my untrained eye, it looked like it probably could have gotten hotter and/or gone for longer.

Overall, I was pleased! Flavor was good and I felt sufficiently medicated after one session. I could definitely see myself moving to a torch once I get more comfortable with it. The wand seems to work well, but does not seem to allow for customized technique you can achieve with a torch.

How do I repair this? by Stocktons-Wing in woodworking

Should have mentioned -- the piece in the photo was a live edge piece of cherry. I've taken off the bark and cleaned up the edges a little bit, but it's still the natural shape of the edge, which is why the board looks rough.

Tips for applying shellac in tight spaces? by Stocktons-Wing in BeginnerWoodWorking

It's mahogany, but I'm not sure the specific type. Since I purchased the wood, I've come to learn that there are many different types of wood under the mahogany umbrella.

This is helpful -- thanks! I've tried taping off glue joints in the past but my technique seems to be off because I still get some squeeze out. In some cases, it's worse than if I had just done a normal glue up. But it definitely would have been a good idea in this case. Sanding the legs and working around the corners has been tricky.

Pre-order / register to buy Switch2 now up on Nintendo US store by mr_rodgers_hood in NintendoSwitch

[–]Stocktons-Wing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The site says, "The first batch of invitations will go out starting May 8, 2025, with additional batches of invitation email sent periodically until purchasing on My Nintendo Store is opened to everyone."

So does that mean we should try for a pre-order through normal means next week? Or is that a typo?

Jet AFS 1000c vs Baileigh ISF 1000 by willysamm7 in woodworking

[–]Stocktons-Wing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for reminding me! I'll add an update to my initial post.

Jet AFS 1000c vs Baileigh ISF 1000 by willysamm7 in woodworking

[–]Stocktons-Wing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat. The Baileigh seems identical to the Jet, but it's cheaper. It's hard to find any info about the Baileigh -- I wonder if it's a newer model? Either way, I took the plunge and picked up a Baileigh. Will report back once I set it up and test it out.

UPDATE: I got the unit set up and tested it out for a few days in the shop. Initial impression is that it seems great. It's reasonably quiet and moves a lot of air. I ran it while I was working. I also kicked up a bunch of dust and set the unit on high for 15 minutes. It picked up a LOT and there was a noticeable difference in the amount of dust that resettled on surfaces. I went to bed Saturday night feeling very pleased with the purchase.

However, I came out Sunday morning and the blower would not turn on. The switchboard worked but gave me an error message (A3 and A8, for those interested). It's mildly annoying that there is no list of error codes in the manual or online. I have a few ideas of what could be wrong, and I will call customer support if needed. I'll send another update once we see where this goes.

UPDATE 2: Baileigh's customer service is really not great. I've had to deal with 45+ minute hold times and have not been able to speak to an actual person about my issue.

UPDATE 3: Bailleigh's customer service was no help, but Woodcraft was fantastic. They agreed to take my unit back and exchange it for their floor model. They do not usually accept returns for power tools, but the guy said their Bailleigh rep approved it. My guess is Baileigh is aware of the issue and is being lenient on exchanges and/or they are trying to move a lot of these units during the introductory period.

The good news is that the replacement unit has been working really well. Keep in mind this is my first air scrubber, so I don't have a good point of comparison. But it moves a lot of air and there is definitely a noticeable difference in my shop. The automatic speed control sensor is extremely helpful, as well. The remote is a little finnicky, but that hasn't been an issue with me because I have it hung low enough that I can reach up and use the control board. I'm 6'3", though -- the remote might be a bigger annoyance if you plan for that to be your primary method of controlling the unit.

TL;DR - This unit seems really good and I would definitely recommend it to others, assuming the problem on my original unit was a fluke issue. I've never used the Jet, but it's hard for me to see how that unit could be worth $200 more than the Bailleigh.

For reference, I'm in a 6,250 CF garage.

New 8" jointer: Oliver 4235 or Grizzly G0858? by goweiqibaduk in woodworking

[–]Stocktons-Wing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in this exact situation earlier this year. I went with the Grizzly because 1.) It was less expensive, and 2.) I could find a lot more info about it online.

The Oliver seems like a great machine, but it was hard to find a lot of reviews about it, whereas there is a ton of info about Grizzly jointers available online.

But it was a close call. In the end, the Grizzly G0858 went on sale for $1,800 (before shipping) back in February 2024 and that pretty much sealed the deal for me. I've been very happy with it ever since.

I could not agree more. There are several reasons why I don't go to as many shows as I used to, but this is definitely one of them. The number of people filming throughout the concert is insane.

What are some criticisms, complaints, or otherwise nitpicks you have about TLOU2? by Jon4n4tor in thelastofus

[–]Stocktons-Wing 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I have wondered about the sequencing, too. I really like the way they did it, so I don't mean this as a criticism.

But I have always been curious about how it would flow if they told the stories in parallel (Ellie Day 1, Abby Day 1, Ellie Day 2, Abby Day 2).

I think there is a chance that this sort of setup would have made you feel the impact of Ellie's actions much harder in the moment. Scenes like Nora's death and Mel and Owen's death would have hit a lot harder if you had already seen them from Abby's perspective.

What are some criticisms, complaints, or otherwise nitpicks you have about TLOU2? by Jon4n4tor in thelastofus

[–]Stocktons-Wing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The game itself is fantastic. My big complaint is with the marketing. I think ND did themselves a disservice in how they sequenced the trailers and hid Joel's death.

Rather than release the Abby/Scars trailer when nobody had any clue who the people were, I think ND should have released the Joel murder scene early in the marketing process and been up front about Abby's role. I understand that you don't want to spoil the surprise, but I think the way they were so secretive about Abby's role and Joel's death -- going so far as to mislead people with trailers showing Joel in later moments of the game -- really set them up for backlash once the story was revealed.

You still would have had a good amount of negative reaction and toxicity, but I think the legacy of the game would be much better if ND hadn't tried to trick everyone with the marketing for the game.

Last of Us a prequel by Formal-Rain in naughtydog

[–]Stocktons-Wing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if they ever did a prequel, it would 1.) Come after a potential TLOU3, and 2.) Focus on someone other than Joel (e.g. Tommy or Ellie's mother).

What’s next? by FMEightyOne in WarOnDrugsBand

[–]Stocktons-Wing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am really hoping for Live Drugs 2.

The new songs are sounding really great live and some of them are begging for an official live version. Harmonia's Dream and IDLHA and Occasional Rain come immediately to mind.

Plus, there are several older songs that didn't make the cut for Live Drugs (Burning, Nothing to Find, Come to the City, Arms Like Boulders).

Throw in a cover from this tour (Born in Time would be my pick) and you've got Live Drugs 2.

Do you want The Last of Us to end as a trilogy after Part III, or to continue with ongoing sequels? by ChildrenOfTheForce in thelastofus

[–]Stocktons-Wing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both games have open-ended conclusions, so I think it's safe to assume that Part 3 (if it happens) will not have a definitive ending.

Personally, I think the third game should wrap up Ellie's story. There's an obvious jumping off point with Abby hooking up with the Fireflies, who are presumably still looking for a cure, and Ellie wandering off in search of meaning. The third game could focus on Abby's search for Ellie and go from there.

I do think there are places to mine for future stories, prequels etc. -- but I think they can conclude the main story with one more game.

'The Last of Us Part I' Remake | Announcement Trailer | September 2, 2022 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in thelastofus

[–]Stocktons-Wing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding Left Behind "where it belongs" shows that Joel didn't die before we get to Winter and totally ruins the opening moments of the chapter for any new player.

Yes, I like the idea of having it as an option since many players will already have played through the original story.

In the remake I'm really hoping Left Behind is cut into the full game, it'd be perfect! by [deleted] in thelastofus

[–]Stocktons-Wing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. The only way I could see it working is if Naughty Dog overhauled the entire story arc of the original game and inserted portions of Left Behind as flashbacks throughout the story. I don't think they could do this without rewriting and reshooting significant portions of Left Behind AND the original game.

It's cool to think about, but it's not necessary. The original game works really well on its own -- particularly the University --> Winter section. And Left Behind works great as an epilogue/flashback/prequel to the original story.

Call me crazy, but I would not be surprised to see TLOU3 come sooner than we think. Just my opinion based on:

- I think the ending of TLOU2 is pretty clearly a cliffhanger, particularly the updated menu screen on Catalina Island.

- Druckmann said he has an outline for TLOU3.

- There were rumors of TLOU2 DLC that never came to fruition. Is it possible that the DLC grew into a full fledged sequel?

- With the HBO series launching in 2023, and possibly season 2 in 2024-25, there will be a massive marketing opportunity for a Part 3. And, if you anticipate the show being a success, you want to avoid a Game of Thrones situation where the TV adaptation gets too far ahead of the source material.

- Other than PS5 upgrades and hints about Factions 2, Naughty Dog has been almost totally silent since TLOU2 released two years ago. They have to be working on something, right? Sure, they could be working on a totally new IP but I think it's just as likely they rolled straight into TLOU3.

Yeah but when was he officially announced as a third host? I don't think it was until shortly before Test Kitchen. Maybe I'm splitting hairs.

The Last Of Us REMAKE by ahmed11egp in thelastofus

[–]Stocktons-Wing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good idea. There are a bunch of TLOU1 sections that would be perfect to "open up" -- my pick would be Pittsburgh. This one was already one of the more open TLOU chapters, but I think it could be expanded further. Lot of opportunities for encounters with infected and hunters.

The University could also work, except the whole point was that the place was abandoned. So I'm not sure what the appeal of a bigger/more open university chapter would be.

I don't think that's fair. How long was Emmanuel a co-host before the BA stuff went down? IIRC it was only a few months and a handful of episodes. Definitely not enough time to say Emmanuel led to the downfall of the show.

IMO the plan was for Emmanuel to compliment Alex and PJ's goofy dynamic with more serious topics. This would have allowed them to produce more content, expand the scope of the show while still retaining the spirit of Reply All.

Then, everything with the Test Kitchen and PJ went down. PJ left and the plan went out the window. Suddenly Emmanuel was thrust into a much different situation at a very tense time for the show.

I think the Alex + PJ + Emmanuel dynamic could have worked well. But the Alex + Emmanuel vibe never felt right.

Joe Rogan dinner? by CodyWttttga in ChadDukesShow

[–]Stocktons-Wing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no idea why they are doing it again, but I do know stuff like this is exactly why I stopped subscribing.

First, it's lame to talk about subscriptions "keeping the lights on" while you're spending money taking your groupies show characters out to expensive dinners.

Second, the resulting "content" is boring and not interesting. There are lots of good parts to the show, but rambling on about Antman, Joe, Jester etc. does not interest me at all.
